Hey guys, yes the part that failed is called the gear indicator switch, 87 808009T11. The scan tool showed the boat being in neutral but was actually in gear. I will check to see if there is any room for adjustment since I had the headers off over the winter. If not, I will be ordering one on Monday so I can replace it ASAP. Thanks for all the help.

For the OP who started the thread to be clear again ------ its not the neutral safety switch - that switch is so your boat does not start in gear for a safety precaution. The same with cars - they will not start in gear because they have a neutral safety switch as well.

Its the shift in gear switch back on the shift plate - engine side - even the 4.3 L --- V 6 - MPI using ecm 555 has those ( shift in gear switch )( for alpha outdrives. - its located on the shift plate with the shift interrupt switch. Alpha ECM 555 and up has 2 switches on the shift plate FYI

- actually they are called shift indicator switch but many in the industry call them shift in gear switch. They both mean the EXACT SAME

The Neutral safety switch is located area of the control box. FYI.

So for example if I bring it up to 4000 rpm, the alarm will sound, rpm drops to 3100 ish for a second and then goes right back up to the 4000 rpm . This will continue back and forth every 5 seconds or so at all rpm's above the 3100 mark. Any ideas???? it is a Smart Craft motor but I do NOT have the Smart Craft Display.
OP: Unrelated to your posted issue, but curious with 350 hours, have you done any top end work? Many talk about these 525s needing to get springs, lifters, etc at 300 hours, but Merc Racing likes to talk about the many 525s out there with 800+ hours on them that have never been touched except oil and impellers....Just curious.
