OK so it has 2 fuel pumps then? a booster and a high pressure pump? Do both pumps have filter screens in them somewhere?

Your serial number falls in the 0M025000 THRU 0M687082
I was using BAM's site an serial number range at their site does not list the boost pump, list only "fuel pump and cooler". This is not to say it was not installed later by the dealer or other. The boost pump was advertised to help stop vapor lock.

Genuine Mercury & Mercruiser parts. 496 MAG (Base Model) - 0M025000 THRU 0M687082

There is no listing for a boost pump. Its not unheard of any year boat to have a 1 year older motor

Now if we look at the next serial number range 0M687083 THRU 0W059999 you will see a listing for "fuel filter and boost pump" and Gen 2 pump is listed as "cool fuel"

When in doubt get a hold of BUP

The link you posted does show 2 fuel pumps, one being a booster pump. My 496 is an early serial number as well and also has the same 2 pumps listed. One is located by the spin on fuel filter/ water separator, the other located on the fuel cooler on the other side of the engine.

Too funny

and for the record - yes many auto stores has the removal tool and for the record Merc lists it as a Kent Moore 3/8 fuel line disconnect tool J- 41769-1 just an fyi as well.

Some of the plastic tools are cheap - some of them I do not like. But of course I use it alot more than a boat owner would.

That reminds me I did not need any special tools to remove the fuel line. I did buy the kit of all different types so now I'm looking for a project to use them on.
