I guess my point was to not replace the drive that you have.
It may or may not hold up, only time will tell.
There are many variables to the longevity of the drives life span.
Other than just a HP rating.
I have an XR drive, with Mods. Hopefully it will hold 710 hp on a cat.
Time will tell, Next drive will be a New IMCO SCX.
After having went through two stock xr set ups.
I was just trying to help!

oh I see

I think that the best thing to do is buy a new/or used IMCO SCX or a drive that can handle much more hp to be on the safe side. But it is a LOT of money.. As you say, it is much more than just the HP rate that can cause a drive failure.
If you drive it ”smooth”/handle it with care with XR I think it can see many hours

Im very interested about the 540 with procharger. Think its a good deal if I compare to the other two engines ive mentioned

I would go with the carb HP500. Easy to work on and diagnose any problems. You can always add a closed cooling system to it.

Thanks. Must love carb engines - as you say, easy to work on.

Whats your thoughts about the Merc 540 Bulldog with procharger, instead of HP500, I just mentioned thats for sale?
