Maybe had too much can button to timing cover clearance the 1st go round. That can cause ignition timing to vary biggly while running at rpm. 6-10* retarded ignition timing can make any engine a dog.

You are likely on to something. My timing light had crapped out(advance) on the first go round. I set the initial at 12 ish, and set the DS box on the Mercury racing 525 curve. Never got to check total advance.
