What is the lobe spread on the camshaft?
The Merlin heads are a good choice for salt water. They are overall down on airflow, both intake and exhaust, ported or not. 280 cfm @.700 exhaust and 380cfm @.700 intake are good numbers for a merlin head. The dart pro ones, 300cfm @.650 exhaust and 400cfm @.650 intake are numbers hard to beat. A very important note.... there is a huge difference between a marine ported head and a drag race ported head. Drag race ports have to flow to .800 lift and above. For the ports to achive this the area under the seats have to be much bigger than a port that has to flow to .650 lift. If your going to have your heads hand ported or cnc'd make sure they are machined by someone with marine experience. Check the airflow numbers at all lifts and dont look at the .850 numbers If your running a .650 cam. And equally important check the venturi under the seat This will have a huge impact on the torque numbers. Our 540's make 700hp or 1.3 hp per cubic inch with a 950 carb and a hydraulic roller cam. 572 will make around 740+hp with your carb.
