fuel cooler ... is it worth it????
#1
I am thinking about installing a 8" long oil cooler in line before my oil cooler / power steering cooler to be used as a fuel cooler just prior to going to the carb. I thought it might cool the fuel a bit to help cut back on the possibility of pre detonation. This is going to be installed on a 454 with a 177 blower with a intercooler. I know that this blower produces a lot of heat that is why I got the inter cooler.
so is this worth it with already having the intercooler or spend the money else where.???????

Fuel cooler is usually only used in a recirculating fuel system. An EFI system uses a positive displacement fuel pump and the pressure regulator bleeds fuel out the back of the fuel rails and sends it back to the tank or back to a tee before the fuel pump. Typically, fuel will pick up a good deal of heat by the time the regulator bleeds it off. This is where a cooler is helpful.
A carb motor with a mechanical fuel pump doesn't really NEED a cooler, but by the same token, the mechanical pump will also transfer some heat to the fuel.
Your fuel should not be inordinately hot under normal circumstances. Your heat issue is due to the mechanical compression of the air/fuel mix thru the blower. The intercooler soaks up a lot of that heat.
Bottom line is that adding the cooler wont HURT anything.

I wouldn't worry about a fuel cooler in this system, your running low pressure and the fuel is not being heated up, and as mcollinstn said, it's typically only used in a bypass system where your returning the fuel to maintain pressure instead of dead heading. EFI's typically need it because there in the 30-50psi range and can get hot when there is low fuel flow and not adequeate time to cool such as a big filter or fuel tank.
Thanks
