Went though the same thing with my 540's last year
Changed cams over the winter. I didn't have enough vacuum at idle to pull fuel once I put it in gear and the rpms dropped some more
.

Do you have the idle set so high that the butterflies are open past the slot? I'm wondering if some carb work by one of the gurus wouldn't help.
