Default Merc Throttle cable (disassembly)

OK, it looks simple, but.... How do you disassemble the carb end of the Merc cable ? It apears to have a pin holding it, but it does not seem to budge. I did not want to break it, but how do you get it apart ? As always, lets turn to the OSO experts, Thanks

Isn't there a cotter pin holding the pin in place?

Well, I don't see any cotter pins. Just a flush pin in the side ?

I believe the stock Teleflex and Quicksilver cables have a crimped rod over the end of the internal pull wire. You will see this as a "dowel" in the plastic end of the connector, near the hole that the carb is hooked to. If you plan to reuse it, I would say good luck. I would suggest that you replace it if it is broken.

Some of the other aftermarket cables have two set screws in the metal "dowel" that would allow you to replace the plastic connector on the end.

Good Luck!

Well it does have a dowel in the plastic end. I have a new cable holder and I wanted to take off the end and install a ball coupling on the throttle end. So I guess I would not realy need to save the plastic end ?

Well...I think if you drill out the center of the 'dowel' on both sides, you may be able to pop it off without breaking the cable support tube or kinking the inner pull wire.

Give it a shot. The most you will lose is a cable and a hour fiddling with it.

Well, I drilled out the dowel and got it apart, but the cable is just a cheesy piece of wire, not like a 33c. I don't see any way to attach the new end for the Dominator, so I will just install the other cable I have. Learn something new each try, Merc Cables are NOT meant to be disassembled.
