I have it even worse, I spent 2K with Mark @ Precision Marine getting my engines perfect to work with these cams and the EFI unit. If I switch, That would have to be done over.
Comp will do a custom grind to your(cranes) specs with 1-2 day turnaround....................Crane does sell a s#%*@ load of cams, and they can't all be breaking, so you've still got a chance - at least when they go, they don't take anything with 'em (except part of your wallet)

Got home today and my Crane cam was here a day earlier than I expected, after opening the box and looked at it, Crane shipped me another black hard induction cam, Called Crane and spoke with Tech support and he said they shipped the wrong cam and would be shipping me the COPPER 8620 cam today and sould get it tommorow????
After looking at the new cam thay have changed the end where the gear is attached. Pics below....
He was very strong that I not put this cam in and to wait for the copper looking one. I then ask him about my other motor that still has the first style in it and he said if it were him ,he would change it to the copper style??????????So what does that mean..............
The pics will show the tappered shaft going to the gear that is breaking and the new one I got that has no tapper.

Interesting difference. It looks like the gear and bearing area is put on the same way, just with diff cut on edge of gear.

Did Crane send it to you, or did a supplier like Summit racing?? If Crane sent it out and it was still a black one, then the next one should be free!!! Thats just ridiculous.................

They are getting a note with my broken cam that says "I will never use a crane product again". They need a wake up call........................

i lost spark sunday, got a new dist. sensor pulled the cap ck'd the rotor to see if it had any wiggle like when they get worn and what the,you can spin the rotor a round, you can go clockwise but counterclock wise it catches,so i pulled the distributor out got a long screw driver and a flashlight huh you can spin the dist gear, called crane ahh we can warranty it yeah but i'm in new york, well we can charge your credit card and you can send the old one back and will credit your card, well ok.so i'll be pulling my engine over the weekend,it was the 139741 with 39 hours on it.hmmm kinda makes me think about still using crane cams.dave

I bought it direct from Crane Tech Support, they did call me back and let me know that they shipped the wrond part and will be shipping me a copper cam out, and should get it tommorrow. I will have to pay freight on two cams now.
All I want is the best for my motors!!!!!! Hopefully it will be better this time. Still have too change out the other motor this winter, if it makes it that long?????????

Anyone that has the black INDUCTION HARDEN CAM should take them out as soon as you can!!!!!!!!!!!!! My .02..........

Looks like Crane moved the break from the billet to cast gear to under the gear. That shoud make it stronger. Still I plan on changing mine this winter as well.

what chance do you think any of us have getting Crane to reimburse us for our time and expense of changing out these bogus cams? They obviously didn't pull the black ones off the shelves last summer/fall after I broke two of them and they admitted to me there was a problem. The tide is still coming in, so to speak. The other thing that I mentioned in an earlier post about this issue is that the the original Crane hyd roller cams in my HP 500's as furnished by Mercury Racing were the copper ones. I've also seen a few other guy's HP500 EFI original cams and they were copper also. This kind of tells me that either Merury Racing knows to specify the copper ones or that Crane knows the copper ones are better and provides them to Merc on their own to avoid potential warranty claims against Merc and them. The rest of us are left to fend for ourselves I guess.

I'm "witcha". I'm sure Merc wouldn't accept any "new" or "alternative" process without proof of it's quality first - they move pretty sloooooow on changes/upgrades!!!

We need a lawyer to have his boat break, (sorry for that wish)---that'll get us somewhere. I can't imagine Crane budging unless this problem is pretty big (and that we can prove we know it is)......

i'll call crane and see what they say,for some reason i always seem to talk to dave maxwell, seems like a nice guy,he was from this area til he moved to florida.he sold me the replacement cam at cost til i send the other one back for warranty credit.the first guy i talked to sounded like a dick in plain english, wouldn't want to work with me at all, wanted to charge me list price,i just said ok thank you and have a nice day.so hey it don't hurt to ask and if we get enough people complaining at the least maybe they'll get better quality control.dave
