Just had a buddies 731 crane cam go bad this weekend. It broke right at the Distributor gear. Wondering how you guys that broke them got the broken piece out of the engine. It would be nice to swap this without pulling the motor. Also did anyone see any damage or pieces floating around? I figure we'll cut the oil filter open to check for any filings but other then that should be OK. Any suggestions or horror stories???
Thanks

Who has had experience with the Crane 139651 cam? Has this been a good cam to use in a 540? Thinking of using 1.8 ratio on the intake side to increase the posted 632, while leaving the ratio at 1.7 on the exhaust side (duration is long enough). Any thoughts?

Don't know all the particuliars here, AXA could fill in better, but there is a problem with some Crane cores and breakage at the distributor gear. When Axa was rebuilding his this spring he noted a diference in the color coding on the two cams, when he questioned Crane later was told the problem was limited to one of the colors. He could fill you in, he is active here and over on the Formula forum.

This one broke just last week. Its a 168731 and its black in color. I spent hours on the phone with vaious people including Crane. They dont really admit theres a problem but I was told by several people that there were many issues and they would never put one of thier black cams in a motor. The copper cams are a harder core. They supposely made them both beefier but I didnt take a chance. The funny thing is people have both in stock so you never know what you will get unless you call and have them open the box and look. Good thing is it was a clean break and there was no metal to be found anywhere in the pan or in the oil.
