The really early ones that had electric solenoids moving the shift lever on the transmissions had the delay you are probably aware of, but it wasn't the tranny's fault.

Newer style Merc pump has larger keyway, it will adapt to both style input shafts by using the proper key.Smaller keyway pumps were more likely to crack,newer style ones are much better.These newer pumps have been out for a long time now.
