Re: 500efis tear down
The Merc rep at the Miami boat show told me last year that 400 hours was the golden hour. Up to that point you are probably okay, beyond that you are taking a chance.
Currently I have two friends with 350 to 380 hours on theirs with no problems at all. Both are looking at a rebuild at this time.
I just got my two 2002 models back together. We took them apart this winter with 280 hours and all looked good except for head gaskets.
I had no broken valve springs, everything looked very good in the engines, but my head gaskets were junk and ready to go in both engines. I'm glad I pulled mine down because I'm sure we would have had gasket problems this season if not.
If you have only 177 hours and all has been good, I would run them about another 100 hours based on my experience.
Of course the Pro Chargers could make a difference.
Hope this helps you out.

Re: 500efis tear down
I have to disagree with doc ive seen too many of them around the 200 mark start to break valve springs and push headgaskets. Merc does recomend top end to be done at 200 hours. there have been several threads on this subject in the past do a search and you will find more info then you ever wanted.
