close call for JBS
#51
I believe that the desription of the RIGHT turn in question suggests that JBS may have been arcing(apexing) the turn from farther outside and coming back to the next(inset) bouy.
Pier 57 seemed to be on a hotter line, going deeper in the turn, perhaps because they were aware of Lightning Strikes on THEIR inside. The fact that they were turning right means if they set their turn to be later/sharper they were coming back inside the turn as JBS was still SLIDING out in their turn.
This is the action that caused JBS to bounce inside directly in the line of L. Strikes.
Think about the begining of the "Freeze Frame" video when the F-1 boats bang together, middle one hits the inside one, then pinballs out and hits the outside one. Same idea I think.
This is just a THOUGHT as to what MAY have happened, please don't bash me.

All the teams involved were RACING, things happen and happen quick. No one is at fault!!!! you were racing and pushing the boats to the envelope.
I am glad all are safe and will be able to race another day. If this thread and video show anything it is, racing is dangerous and canopies help prevent injuries. The part that no one mentioned as well was you werent racing for first place, which says a lot about the competition in OSS, every point counts!!!

To clarify....Lightning Strikes has no idea who may have, could have or was out of control or potentially cut somone off in the events leadning to the three boat incident, in turn 1 to 2? Angel 1 helicopter very clearly told me personally that we were a victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
All I know was we had the inside lane, call it lane 1. We were turning pin to pin with right of way. In order to cross lanes in a turn, the boat must have a FULL boat length minimum ahead of compteting boat, before crossing lanes in a turn, otherwise the rule is HOLD your lane.
We never saw JBS coming so we do not know what transpired before the collission?
As far as people thinking we were airborne before hitting them, I don't think that is possible, other then some boat wake lifting the bow? But if you look at the still pictures of the JBS boat, the bow hit the stbd bowside then launched us. I think the video may make it hard to comprehend or visualize the initial contact, it happens so fast.
Unfortunately sometimes Rubbing is racing! We are all strong competitors with the same desire to win.

My Boat (57 In Case You Havent Figured It Out) Was In The Middle Position With Jbs At My Far Left And L.s. At My Right. L.s. And I Took The Inside Route To The Pin And Jbs Took The Outside Route. Two Different Approaches To The Same Turn. We Went Hard To The Pin And As For Washing Them Down That Was Neither Intentional Or Illegal. What May Not Be Apparent In The Video Clip Is The Fact That The Second Turn Buoy Was Offset Back To The North Which Required A Pretty Hard Turn To Go To The Pin. We Didnt See Jbs Untul They Were On Top Of Us And The Bottom Of Their Boat Was Outside My Window. I Know From The Angle That Jbs Was At There Was No Way For Jeff To See Us And Joe Didnt See Us Until The Last Second As Heard On Audio. Even After The Race Joe And Jeff Both Told Me On The Dock That They Had No Idea What Exactly Happened And Neither Did We. As For The Comment Earlier About Why Would Someone Be Allowed To Race With Us While Driving Out Of Control I Doubt There Is A Racer Out There That Can Say That He / She Has Never Been Out Of Control A Time Or Two. As For Joe, Jeff, Mike And Bob They Are All Professionals Who Do This Sport Good. Anyone From The Jbs Camp Want To Back Me Up Or Would You Prefer To Sit Back And Let The Rumor Mill Villify Us.

Billy,
I think the "out of control" comment is what got to you. From what I saw in the video, no one was out of control, it was more a matter of limited visability out of the canopies that helped this incident occur.
Hope your boat is fixed and at the next race.

Hey Guys -
Sorry If I Seemed A Bit Uptight Last Night And I Am Sorry Mark If It Seemed Like I Was Pointing Fingers. I Was Simply Trying To Say That None Of The Boats Saw What Was Happening Until It Was Too Late. You Were Right Ron That It Pushed My Buttons A Little When Any Of The Boats In The Incident Were Implied To Be Out Of Control. I Believe That We Have A Strong Bond Amongst Us That Challenge Each Other On The Race Course And Perhaps It Is This Feeling That Made Get A Little Huffy When I Thought That Any Of Us Was Being Put Down. Mike I'm Sorry That We Originally Thought That The Initial Contact Was With You And Bob And I Hope You Understand Our Confusion. Lets Get Back To Racing, Ive Put In The Last .04 Ive Got.
