I spent the day on the pace boat with OSO's own Blonde Cig Chick on Johnny O's 42 GTX called All Fired Up. He came back from the A/C poker run with No Discipline, who was also a pace boat.

Re: Brick OPA Results
Hello Race Fans,
OPA kicked off the 2004 racing season today with another exciting and safe race in the Atlantic Ocean off Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. The day couldn’t have been nicer as the temps stayed in the low 80s, and the wind blew just enough to make things interesting. On Saturday OPA turned a vacant parking lot along Rt 70 into a carnival / Dry Pits. It was a huge success as the highway visibility along with local press, both in print and on air brought out hundreds of race fans. They got to see the teams and their boats, climb a rock wall, watch a bicycle stunt show, enjoy a band and even see a bikini contest. There was some very impressive hardware in the pits. Bob Oliver’s 47’ Apache sporting triple 1300hp engines and #6 drives was the queen of the show. Stylin and Relentless sported new paint jobs and several new boats from as far away as Massachusetts and Maryland came to race the Jersey Boyz in their home waters. At 12:40 the boats tore out the inlet at full speed to the delight of hundreds of fans that lined the inlet sea wall. The boats then proceeded into an ocean devoid of swells but a wind blow three-foot chop replaced the early morning glassy sea. After a short delay to move some of the spectator boats away from the racecourse, the racers followed pace boat one down the beach in front of thousands of sun worshipers and race fans. Pace Boat two followed seconds later and the entire fleet was in motion. The P5 class had the largest field of boats with seven entries, four of them being 28’ Panteras. This turned into a race of attrition as Goumada took the win away from Carrabbas. The new team of Papa Dukes flew the boat all-day and held onto take third over Revolution Marine. Xtra racing, Simply Awesome and Sonic Boom rounded out the bottom of the field. In P4, Team Nesquik was on a mission, they tore up the course and the only boat that could stay with them was the single engine 32’ Bad Boy with big power. The race was tight until the Bad Boy broke the drive and Nesquik went on to take the win over CMS, Steelin Time and Jesse James and the well-spanked Bad Boy. There was some serious smack talk going on before the P3 race between the 2003 OPA National Champion, Wazzup and the 2003 SBI World Champion 38’ Bad Boy. Additionally I understand someone said “Put your money where your mouth is” and a $ubstantial bet was wagered between the two teams, just to make things interesting. When the green flag dropped, the two boats went at it side by side, swapping the lead as they entered and exited turns. Wazzup could hold more speed in the turns but the Bad Boy could take them on the long two-mile straightaways. It was a great battle until the seemingly unbreakable Wazzup dropped out with a broken drive and the Bad Boy ran till the end. This was third time the Bad Boy beat Wazzup out of their last four face-offs. After the race, Bad Boy throttleman Kurt Berger was heard saying that he enjoyed racing against “What Was Up” and looked forward to a season of beating them. Eddie Smith, driver for Wazzup replied by saying that he’d have something special for the Bad Boyz in Atlantic City. This looks like it could become a season long battle between these two boats. The pre race hype between the two big Vee bottoms in P2 class never materialized. The triple engine Apache sucked up mud while it was leaving the pits and overheated the center engine. They still managed to run around the course at a respectable speed on the outer two motors but they could do nothing compared to what Obsession had in store for them. The big Outerlimits went onto take an easy win over Firewater. Three cats ran in P1 class. Out of the gate, Relentless had the lead, then Stylin took over, then Lightening Jacks, it was a great race as these fast cats worked their way through traffic around the course. Relentless was the first to drop out due to a faulty harmonic balancer. Shortly thereafter, Lightening Jacks found out what Guardian Mode does on his brand new Merc 525s. This left Lightening Jacks limping around the course and Stylin continued to run strong throughout the 18-lap challenge to take the overall win. Photos from the weekend are posted at www.njoffshore.homestead.com/Brick04.html. These are thumbnail images. Click on each photo to see a larger image. Also Jim O’Conner and his staff did their usual outstanding job and their photos can be found at www.njsportpics.com. Just click on “view recent events” and you’ll see the power boat races listed on top. Please mark your calendar for the weekend of July 17th and 18th when OPA will smoke the waters off Atlantic City New Jersey. We are short on volunteer boats for the A/C race so if you want to take an overnight trip to A/C and help out, we’d love to have you. Stay tuned for more info on the A/C race next week. See ya at the races, Ron |

Re: Brick OPA Results
Even though we didn't even last two full laps, we still had a great time!
We've got the motor out and the parts at the machine shop as we speak. We found the problem that caused the raw water pump to fail. I'll have everything back in a few days and ready for AC. "Sonic Boom Racing" will make every race!! We are committed!! BTW, did any one happen to take any pictures of our boat on the course?? |
Re: Brick OPA Results
Hey Tom...I feel your pain and I'm sorry that you guys broke. We had a good battle going there. I admire your perseverance.
Good luck to you guys. See ya in AC |
Re: Brick OPA Results
Tom,
You guys certainly have heart. I thought it was anyones race when all four Panteras lined up before turn 1. Now it's a race between you and Bruce to see who gets their boat back to gether first. :D We may not make it to AC to race, but I'll be there as a .....spectator. Good luck to all you guys PS-Bruce why don't you just throw a #6 on and be done with it?? :D :D |
Re: Brick OPA Results
I will probably blow up a #6 too. You guys better race AC!!!! No excuses
Remember if it cant be broken...Bruce can break it |
Re: Brick OPA Results
We had a great time....typical NJ water....boats delaminated, broke bulkheads and just about every team came limping in with something broke. I am looking foward to A.C. and hopefully a new way to fix the GPS debockle... see everyone soon
|
Re: Brick OPA Results
Q,
I say strap them to a bow rail so no tampering can happen you know they don't like metal or metal tape. My boat should be done next week and ready to reinstall the cockpit. I will be ready! JIm |

I may have to change my screen name to "Plastic Surgeon"... :D :D :D |
Re: Brick OPA Results
Bruce, you should just go ahead and find a good mechanic/boatbuilder and put him/her on the payroll!! :D
All kidding aside, you have to have the boat ready for AC! John, tell Jerry to have a talk with the new baby and explain that he/she needs to be born a few days early, and understand that daddy has boat race on the 17th and that he really needs to compete in!! ;) I hadn't even relized there was a problem with the GPSs. We didn't really hang around long after the race. After a short stop over at the dry pits, we all went back to Nicki's uncle house, got packed up, stopped for a sandwich and then got on the road. My head didn't hit the pillow until almost 3AM as it was! Man, Bobby and I were sure draggin last night when we pulled the motor out of the boat! Well, I have a couple of days to rest up before I get the parts back from the machine shop and put the whole thing back together again! I kind of wondered how the GPSs worked out? John had mentioned that Kurt was a little testy when he brought the GPS back once we got back to the dry pits! We found it kind of odd that Kurt would ask us why we didn't turn it back in out on the course!! I suppose we could have brought that up to the Sea Tow guy!! I for one thought the pick up on the course was a good plan. Considering that this was the first time we did it this way, it seemed as though everyone was able to pick up the GPS without any trouble! |
Re: Brick OPA Results
I agree with Bruce in post#25. John, Jerry...I have your life-vest, that for letting us use it for our sponsor. We will lock it with our's in Smitty's closet at the marina.

I hope that it will be better in AC.
Or did that get tossed? I agree with you too Bruce. Everyone should be given their times and speeds for each lap if they are available. It can help many racers set their boats up even more. You can also learn just how hard you will be able to run your boat... |
Re: Brick OPA Results
There was a computer program set up for avg lap speeds. I thought the speeds would have been posted by now. I dont know why they werent'.
Once again, I must say that APBA has a system that works. I think we should follow suit. GPS should be set at Zero and placed in our boats at the wet pits. They should be removed at the end of the race back in the wetpits and immediately shown to the teams and competitors as witnesses. And signed off by both. |
Re: Brick OPA Results
Bruce, that seems good plan!
|
Re: Brick OPA Results
I think you'll see changes in the GPS deployment in A/C. Two boats hit the turn boat handing out the units and it wasn't that rough.
|
Re: Brick OPA Results
i believe in ac things will be done much different with the installing or whatever u wanna call it of the gps before and after the races they will prob be done in the wet pits...but i can see y they would not want anyone to see the speeds and what not...one reason behind it is because if u broke out period the next race u should move to the next class up to be playing the game the right way...so if everyone who broke out was shown their speeds they would then be able to set the boat up differently so they could race in the same class...thats just my 2 cents whether it makes sense or not but i dont necessarily agree with that cause i would have like to find out my max speed as well...even though i didnt finish or break out i would have still liked to see it but hey u live to learn and only make it better lets see what happens in ac....again just my input thanx

Re: Brick OPA Results
Stroker...
this past weekend (according to sources) we were penalized and knocked off the podium because our GPS read 82.9mph. I have a hard time believing that our GPS said that speed because our boat is not capable of those speeds. Even in its A-class days it was not capable of those speeds during a race. So in theory....we should be a P3 boat? We finished 300 yards in front of the next boat and their GPS stated 54 mph. Augies stated 97mph (once again unconfirmed inside report). The simple fact is that the way the GPS set up was done this past weekend was ridiculous. Things have to change and representative need to return their phone calls. :blaster: |
Re: Brick OPA Results
Q-Ball, no one would tell me what mine said. My boat GPS read 79 on the nose, Mike Merola seen it when we pulled into the dock. Now I know we sat in the middle of the course for 25 minutes before you finished so go figure? You and Pee-Wee did a great job for your first time together and his first race. Don't let anybody knock you! For what it's worth I would bet ANYTHING that you guys DIDN'T break out.
|
Re: Brick OPA Results
Kurt's read 94 while Smitty's read 84, yet they ran side by side. Kurt ran really hard down the front stretch and thinks the number is probably accurate.
I got the answers from OPA, both you and Augie broke out by one one mph so you got a one minute penalty. Did you secure the GPS or let it fly around the floor of the cockpit? GPS movement would be recorded as a higher speed. In A/C, the units will be secured in the cockpit at the pits and the speeds will be shown to the team after wards, or would you like all speeds to be shown to everyone? The racers asked for the use of GPS, they should not turn into a point of controversy. We tried something in PP and will make adjustments for A/C. We're all learning. But there's one thing for sure. Either you use GPS and go by what it says without question or you don't use them at all. There can be no arguing with the GPS readouts. |
Re: Brick OPA Results
one last time...if its done right there would be no cotroversy.
the GPS are "zeroed" or reset in front of the team. mounted in a box on the dash by the tech inspector. Removed by the tech inspector and immediately shown to the team and a competing team as witness. Its simple. I dont know why its so difficult. Yes, we wanted GPS and still want GPS. But if the system isnt used properly, it will fail as it did on Sunday. Ron, you've been to APBA races. Were there any problems or complaints?? I dont think so. Keith is right. how could we have lapped him twice if he was doing 82? I guess we were doing 102 before we broke. Now I know why I keep breaking drives. |

Re: Brick OPA Results
Q-Ball
I watch your boat run ,If your boat went over 52 mph , I will be shocked. You and pee-wee ran a great race . Yes ,I seen Augie`s onboard GPS it said 79 mph. Mike |
Re: Brick OPA Results
Bouncing around the boat these were never in a case as stated in the dry pit meeting.
And no way q broke cause we were ahead till we broke the hull and we were no where near class speed after 4 th lap when it turned around out of south east. |
