Any word on what the rules are going to be at Grand Haven this summer? We where thinking about getting a group to head up there, but after reading this article I know I wouldn't pass the noise ordinance without mufflers and I'm not putting mufflers on a boat that has Silent Choice exhaust. I always respect the inland residents and marina people and put my exhaust under the water til I'm out of the mouth of the rivers, but to make you put it above water to be tested when your trying to respect people is just harrassment and looking for a way to write tickets.
If those condo dwellers didn't want to hear boats they shouldn't have bought houses on the water...What next complaining of seagull droppings on they're sidewalks?

I hope someone from Grand Haven is reading every sentence of these posts. All the local business' can thank their residents for chasing off a bunch of revenue. I realize that the Western Michigan Economy is so strong that the extra boating revenue in the summer does not matter ( sarcasm, small business is dying on the vine currently). There is a whole bunch of us that will not be going out there, they can take that town and shove it right up their a$$. There are plenty of fun places to go. I have spent alot of money out there over the years, no more. After my lawyer and I walked out of the court room ( my noise ticket was dismissed) I said good riddens.

Though some of this has been covered on SW thread I definately have time to cover it one more time. Chicken, plug your ears, you have heard this one hundred times. The tickets I had spanned two seperate incidents.
1. The first was an altercation at Kozacs downtown after the bar. We (me, chicken, and friends) were getting food to eat back at the boats on "The Wall". A Dick Head, we will call him "Grand Haven's son of Karate", " Car Ra Tae" decides he going to give us a hard time while were waiting in line, it was busy. He just keeps running his mouth, Finally, I have enough, I say, " My friends and I are just here to get some food, Shut the F up, and leave us alone". Instantly He proceeds to punch me sqaure in the mouth, right at the counter. Well, I take exception to it, and just nail him twice, and good, he's down on the floor, face is bleeding ect. The end. Cops come, I say hey, I was just defending myself, he started it. So Karate guy rides away in the ambulance, me in a squad car????? I am looking at disturbing the peace ( I guess maybe), and assualt and battery ????? "Local Karate Star" (what the cops said who hauled me in) starts fight, gets a$$ kicked, then cries foul, and the cops support him????? It was just BS, I am in my right to self defense.
2. Cruising down the Channel with five friends, in a bone stock 382 Fastech with carb 500's and silent thunder. I get pulled over, no one is drinking, no music ????? It's for noise, I am like WTF, you have to be kidding me. I said go ahead, this boat is stock and will pass no problem. The DA cop does the typical put the meter inside the compustion chamber, it shows 98 db, BS. I tell him he's doing it wrong, he did it wrong, your doing it wrong, you don't know what your doing, on and on. So I get a ticket, with a fine, and repair and report. How do you, or why would you repair a stock vessel that is under the DB, what can I do? I explain this to the Sergant out there, that falls on deaf ears.
3. So I get my lawyer involved, tell him the truth about all that has happened. I tell him about the fight, I disturbed peace, but was only defending myself. About the boat and how it is stock, and all the harrassment. He went out there with me, then when in the coart house, went into some room without me. I sit and wait, he comes out, says you are are pleading guilty to "Jouseling in public" the other three charges are dropped. That seemed like justice, the right outcome. Should you have to spend $1000.00 for justice? Well, OJ proved to us all, money talks, the rest rot in jail.
Lessons We Should All Take From My Experience:
1. Grand Haven does not welcome sport boating, period.
2. Even Justified, do not fight in that town.
3. Always hire a lawyer, Sad, but True.
4. Most Important, don't start a fight with the red head wearing the black T-shirt, an ambulance ride might be in your future!

I still love hearing the stories bro! There was more than blood... it was more like...well... sprayed across the counter and wall.
Im sure that moran still didn't learn his lesson.
Sadly the noise enforcement will not stop, since it has been on the books for a long time. Over the last two years they started enforcing it. I have spent allot of time dealing with the cops on this See this thread at the beginning and the one I started on SpeedWake) and feel we made some good progress at the end of the summer. The cops did start getting trained in meetings so they administer the test equally throughout the day. But that will not stop them if you are to loud.
Might as well start looking into mufflers because it is starting to spread. Muskegon, Holland, Saugatuk, and Port sheldon are now on the bandwagon. I hate to admit but it is nice not getting hassled anymore. Motors still sound great idleing around and I open them when I hit the lake, or areas that don't complain.
Grand Haven is surprisingly growing very strong considering all the new devolments going on downtown. New condos all over, new shopping/condo and expo center, and the city is going to give the downtown a multi million dollar face lift. All this just adds to the new residents that may complain.
In the end go out and start calling in cabin cruisers that are to loud! There are plenty of them from the late eighties and early ninties that had big blocks with no mufflers. Give the MC numbers and a exact location of the boat. Remember it is the complaints that started them checking noise. They did'nt start for the hell of it.
Also remember to start blairing your stereos in hanky pank. Pete won his case and the courts rules that ottowa county can NOT enforce the city noise ordinance on the water until they have a way to messure the volume. (see post #81)
