I didn't see any extra holes in the frame that would allow relocation of the engines: don't know if that was the plan. There was extensive gusseting throughout the engine compartment. Jack Clark told me that Gifford had planned to try and break the NY to Miami record, but Gifford never made the attempt.
Anyway , I believe once you achive a suitable hull cg the only thing that changes is fuel load . I'm pretty sure that hull cg'd at about 115" , but don't quote me . |

I presume back then with this type of construction they didn't want to take chances , we ran these things nuts out no matter the conditions .
. Note: Jack removed those extra stringers from mine before I bought it. |
I remember looking at Dougs 35' before he bought it and also Due's 40' when it was at Jack's shop for sale. The only issue (cosmetic) with Dougs was some cracking just forward o fthe wind screen just in front of the bulk head. Jack said they all 35's cracked there about 3-4 inches and never got any bigger.
Due's boat is built like an absolute tank from a construction aspect. I bet it doen't have any cracks from new. If I could find a 35 I would scoop it up in a heart beat. I love the extra 5 feet over the Chris Cat and the Jaguar just looks better overall. |
I am pretty sure every 35 is for sale. I enjoy mine but for the right price everything is for sale. Doug
|
ya im with Doug on this so mine is too LOL.....what is your offer for a turn key 100+ mph boat?
|
Good reading and great work Bob! I love the lines of the old Jags and you're now looks better than new. Congrats on a job well done!
Just looking at the numbers, it does look like there's some speed left on the table somewhere... hard to believe it's just props. I wonder if moving sand bags around on the boat might help point to CG issues or areas for improvement. The other thing I noticed is the battery placement. You might want to play with moving them back and down. |
I dont think moving 2 batteries (maybe 75pds) is gonna net a 10 mph increase or even a 1 mph increase! Boat does not change much in speed when full of fuel or almost empty. And that is almost 1000 pds....

Was 80+ degrees here last saturday and took the boat out to the local lake. Has been sitting since last summer. Started up and ran great! Was a good day!

Don't hurt it before Desert Storm. I have your launch site set up. I'm going to be at Knotts Berry farms for the Ford Event on April 10th. I know you're not a ford guy but I'm bringing down the T bolt for the show and the Cobra to sell. Stop by. Doug
|
Ill give you a call so we can meet up...

Best of luck with the Cobra sale; it's an awesome vehicle (as is the T bolt). John |

Some pics after new gelcoat...

Rob-
That looks great! Great name too! Doug- Tagged your boat in a U Tube video at Havasu, which had the new boats with 1350 Merc engines running past: couldn't miss the "On Time"! |
We had a great time in Havasu. I ran the hell out of the Jag in the wind on Saturday. I hooked up with Rob on Friday, this was my best trip at Desert Storm. By next year we should have it perfect. Rob's boat looks better in person. The pics are nice but does not do the fit and finish justice. A really nice job. Doug

I have been running the cnc 17X35 five blade Merc props. What a great prop. Doug
|
I agree the 17" diameter works great!
|
Thanks Doug!! It was a fun weekend aside from the wind...

Been thinking about modifying the bottom of my boat. After much research I have figured why our boats ride so well, yet are not the fastest out there for the given power. Most cats have a 12-15 sponson deadrise. Less angle = faster, but a little less ride comfort. Old flatbottom comes to mind. Anyways my boat has a 25 degree deadrise . Which means a better ride, but slower, less efficient hull. Would be a winter time project. I really like the Jag. It gets alot of attention in Havasu because no one knows what it is. I get alot of questions. Then I tell them it is an old race boat the I redid and they think its way cool. Happy Boating :boat:

agree Rob- Our Jag gets tons of attention and we're content with the speed. One other great thing: paid cash for all of it! :drink: |
yep I agree with the paying cash...I have no boat payment and registration is like $20 bucks...but i wont tell what i paid online for the hull and trailer :) but it was cheap!
|
Are we suppose to pay for our boats? Doug

No, thats what we have friends and women for :):lolhit:

I thought that the program was, take out a huge boat loan and then not make payments and before the boat is repoed, remove anything and everything that is worth money and give the bank a near worthless hull and trailer. Being sure to sell the engines, drives and parts for cash. Gee, I wonder why boat loans are impossible to get? Doug

Really have enjoyed the thread. You guys have some really nice rides. Out of my price point, but nice to admire. I have an old 25' Talon race boat that I paid cash for and really enjoy running. This is my first cat and is still a blast to run. I'm still learning more and more about the handlnig each time out. Enjoy them! Bob

Welcome to the forum! The Talon has a great hull and history. What kind of power are you running? John |
I am fortunate to get to ride in a 37 Talon enclosed cockpit cat. What a great ride and it is currently waiting for new power. That boat is in a different boating level, way out of my league. Doug

It's a beast. I want a 32 with outboards or something around 30 feet. Keep us posted on how your boats perform. I'm living vicariously through you guys. Bob |

Thanks for the welcome. I've been lurking for a couple of yrs and thought I would chime in. I had ported 260s' approx. 300 hp, when they ran they ran strong. Downgraded to 225 promaxes built by Diamond marine. They seem to pull as hard in the midrange, but probably top out at 100. Still playing with props, running 15x30 labbed spinellis' that I have only turned to 6200 due to engine height. Borrowed a set of 14.5 x30s', but haven't ran them yet. I have a cheap hand held Cobra GPS that works when it wants to and always seem to have 50 gal of fuel aboard. 94 mph is all I've seen so far turning 6200 rpms. I have been running in 2' lake chop which has been a blast to run in. I have realized that this hull doesn't like any positive trim. Hull seems to generate enough lift on it's own. Don't forsee ever being able to afford to feed big blocks but admire your rides.

Met a good guy with a 36 Skater and BIG blower motors at the Lake Murray poker run in South Carolina where I live. He offered me a ride for the Emerald Coast Poker Run and boy what a ride it was. 140 mph was the fastest we ran and there was plenty left. Really enjoyed the run and now we a planning on Key West and maybe Bimini!
Good luck getting her in the water. Hope everything goes well and keep us posted! Bob |
Thanks Bob!

Considering selling my Jag if anyone is interested. Gonna invest in my trucking business a bit more for now.....So let me know if anyone is interested. Possible financing available...
|
I can't believe you're selling after all the great work you did however I agree business expansion comes first .
Someone will be getting a nice boat . I wish you well . ps ; list it on OSO I've sold 4 boats on this site . |
Thanks....Well not super motivated to sell at this point. If it does it does if it dont it dont... Its all good either way!

Great run. I toasted a rebuilt trans at Havasau during Desert Storm. I sent them both back to Huber's to have him repair the smoked trans and recheck the other. I ran maybe 20 minutes since Earl rebuilt them both. I'm sure he will corect the problem. Doug
