Kryptonite project begins....

Alright guys I figured I would start a thread on my Kyrptonite so we can start to fill this new forum up.

So it's a 2001 27 Kryptonite. It has some very nice and smart features I liked when I was shopping for a new ride. The previous owner (Holden) had it built without the pad (it has a V where the pad would usally be) and a notched transom. The boat is very solid. Cored hull and sides vacumed bagged with vinyl ester resin. Hull and deck glassed together. The back seat lifts up with the engine hatch and the bulkhead is cutdown so you have easy access to the motor, plus the 8' beam also helps. The cockpit is a full liner cockpit with drain holes in the corners to the bilge. Under the back seat you will find the gas tank fully glassed in with a drain hole just above it to the bilge. While everything from the cockpit back drains into the bilge there is no drain hole in the bilge for the water/oil/fluid to flow back through the entire hull. Everything stays contained in the bilge with just a drain hole at the transom. So basically if you get some water in the cuddy you have to dry it up manually, gravity won't help you. Which also means gravity won't hurt you because all the schit can't flow from your bilge into the cuddy. I like this alot.

Holden has already rigged it very nicely so I don't have much to do there. Just a few things once I drop my motor in. Most of my work will be in the cuddy. I'll probably just gel/paint it and get some cushions made up for the facing benches. Which I can lay down on at 6'. Maybe some carpet in the v berth area so it's not umcomfortable. I don't want to put cushions up there because there are two storage areas up there I will be using. I don't want to have to pull the cushion up everytime I want to get something, plus it will save some weight....that foam and vinyl adds up! Anyway here a few more pics so you can see what I'm working with.

Nice, carpet in the V berth works nicely and looks good. In fact my cuddy is all carpet even the ceiling. Then we have cushions on the facing lounges.

DonRoc 12-06-2009 07:48 PM

Get a canvass guy to make vinyl covers for the big access holes where you see the back of the dash on one side and the rear glove box on the other. Match the carpet, cleans it up and is cheap. And you can snap them out to gain access.
Make a cover for the anchor locker with thin plexi (over lap 1-2") and cover it with the same vinyl you use for the covers above put hinges at the top and Velcro on the back side, mine sticks nicely to the carpet when it shuts and cleans up that area also.

Don I already thought about the vinyl for the cutouts. I'm also going to have one made for cuddy entrance instead of the half door all the other ones have. Holden gave me the door to install but I think a soft vinyl door with a zipper would be better. Wifes not digging it only goes half way down. Here's a couple pics of how I did it when I rebuilt the Corsa.

If you get a chance post some pics of your cabin for me. Also one of your anchor locker...thanks

jdub 12-06-2009 09:50 PM

Thanks that helps. I don't think I'm going to do that much carpet. Maybe just the v berth. Paint the rest. Do the bench cushions. Keeping it pretty plain.

Do you have back cushions with your bench cushions? Thinking I might do some....

Jdub, I don't believe any kryptonites came with back cusions. I don't think you'd need one nor want to deal with it flying around when you get in the rough stuff. Again, I'd contact Maureen at One Moe Sign. She has the templates for Kryptonite interiors (1998-2006). I think she charged me $200 per side??? Also, I'd suggest putting some rubber edging around the pop up doors in your boat. I remember when Holden took me out for a ride they were all clanking together.

DonRoc 12-06-2009 10:57 PM

No back cushions. it is actually pretty comfortable without them. And we are hardly ever sitting in the cabin
The boat my customer has does have backs, he also had the logo embroidered in all the cushions and the cockpit rug, plus a v berth cushion. But he hits the poker runs and sleeps over on the boat. Really nice but I don't have pictures. I did put a purple rug in mine really cleaned it up and set off all the yellow.

DonRoc 12-06-2009 11:01 PM

The shop in Syracuse who did the cushions for my customer put snaps on the back cushions they stay put. But you really do not need back cushions. I got the Logo's from Kirk I have them somewhere, if you need them I can look around.

Philm 12-07-2009 06:50 AM

Looks like it should be a nice project. I am going to get a carpet to lay down in the center of my cabin with the embroidered logo just to save the carpet that is in there. As you already know John, The walls and overhead of mine are all padded vinyl. I also plan to get a cockpit carpet with the logo on it to snap in place.

Of course, I have to get a rebuild first...:lolhit:

How are the plans for the rebuild comming?

jdub 12-07-2009 10:02 AM

Art ...the guy that bought my Saber...does marine carpets. If we come up with a design and all order one he'll hook us up.

Congraduations on the the new Kryptonite John.I look forward to running with you guys next season.

fantastixvoyage 12-07-2009 02:05 PM

Guess you're out of the market for the phantom eh? :drink:

Nice boat. Best option I'd say for the cabin door is the molded steps that swing up. VERY practical. Joker has a mold that would likely work for ya if Kryptonite doesnt have 'em too.

What's up Neil. It was hard to pass this one up. I think it will be a pretty good runner. I like the Phantom...you know that. But I was looking for the most effecient hull in the size range. The Kryptonite fit the bill well.

I do like the molded steps for the cabin door. I know Superboat and Joker both do it. Might have to look into it.

Well, I have been busy with work and all that nonsense that comes with it, like flying to South Africa and riding a drilling rig across the ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, but I have been thinking about the rebuild that I need. My idea right now is to keep the current configuration of the engine, 9.5:1 compression, 345cc Pro 1 heads, 598ci, and keep it N/A, but to have a new cam ground for it and put Morel hydraulic roller lifters in it instead of the solids. I was also planning on maybe a bit milder cam grind, making slightly less hp and tq in the long run, but hopefully living a bit longer. I use my boat twice a weekend all summer, and sometimes more than one day during the week when I am home. 650-700hp would be more than acceptable if it would run for longer than 60 hours.:lolhit: There is a 598ci in the classifieds with hydraulics that was turning 801hp at 6000rpm, so it can be done of course, but I can live with 650hp or so and still hit high 80's to low 90's.

I know that I will probably hear a bunch of crap over having such an overbuilt engine for the amount of hp that I would be running, but reliability is becoming more of a factor in my decisions at this point.

Philm 12-08-2009 07:02 AM

John, if you happen to find a mold for the molded steps, I would be very interested in a set.

slpcamaross97 12-08-2009 09:36 AM

So Jdub do you just enjoy building boats that much wow you have had 3 since ive been looking and dragging my feet. lol Looks good whats the plans?

eddieb 12-08-2009 10:22 AM

Cabin..

I don't know Jdub.. DonRoc's cabin looks pretty sweet.. I would go with the carpet instead of the paint.. for a more finished look..
hey.. do me a favor and put some cushions on the top side of that cabin so my wife doesn't cut her head wide open again in the rough stuff.. haha..

I think if that works for you and is reliable then by all means go with it. I think 650 hp would be easy on the motor and get you 90 mph without much of a issue. I am about ready to sell my 509. And should be ordering my new motor this week. I am going to start a thread so I don't step on Johns build.

Congrats on the new boat. It ran well when Holden had it and I'm sure you will get some big numbers out of it as well.. I believe it about ran 104 with Holden, Kirk and I in the boat....vinnie

I relaxed on my search some what. Just sick of dealing with the banks.... so i decided to just save the cash this winter, Ended up selling the Checkmate so i got cash laying around. Ive got a few ideas of what i might want. Pantera is still at the top of list but did come across Sutphen race boat, and well you know me Mind is always thinking of something.....

So whats the reason you went with this since its a 27 not to much different from the saber? is it that its a faster hull???

That's cool I'm sure you'll come up with something. That single 26 Sutphen that just went up would be a nice buy.

I really wanted to go back to a sit down boat. After running the Saber last season I relized (for me) that's where it's at. Can't beat the feeling of a boat that's made to sit in and run. Plus your right being faster is nice too. But the Kryptonite is actually bigger in the cuddy (wider) and also has alot more room in the engine compartment.

So the hull is not a 7ft beam with a 24 deg bottom?

Also the sutphen is a 31ft race boat. Dude, has been showing me a ton of race boats and keeps saying that a cabin is not that great.

Philm 12-13-2009 09:43 PM

8.2' beam

23 degree deadrise declining to 21degrees towards the stern i believe (could be wrong), 8.2 beam as philm said. Boat is made to run on top of the waves. Sutphens are mead to cut through the waves.

Philm 12-14-2009 07:17 AM

It certainly does run on top of the waves, especially at 100+ :drink:

slpcamaross97 12-14-2009 08:07 AM

sounds like a nice boat. How are the hull built??? ive always loved the black Krypt, that i think is called typhoon...

jdub 12-14-2009 11:36 AM

Vacumed bagged vinyl ester with balsa and foam coring. Deck and hull glassed together........tough!
