Fastest Kryptonite on the Planet? Maybe..

I am sill in the planning stage but after many months of going back and forth on what engine components, blower, and induction system I am getting close. My goal is two have the best running, idling, docking manners, reliability and still the highest MPH. I need to represent my marina properly. The only thing I will leave to chance for now is the drive. It is an IMCO extreme -3 setup. I expect if I get to top speed easily the lower may last 50 hours. Then I will replace the upper and lower with the new IMCO SCX. But for now I will dedicate my effort to the engine. The highest top speed I have heard of is 108 MPH.
I will update this as soon as I make the final decision on parts. Then the build and fun will begin.

Get a good look..ha ha ha Just busting your balls. Holden said he had 800hp in it to get to 108. But remember this boat is basically stripped down and light. With what you have planned you shouldn't have a problem taking the title.

Procharger M-5, and Accel DFI

I'm a Procharger Dealer.. So to let a little out of the bag it will have a M-5 on it
I also want to build something cost effective, to do a Whipple 4 Liter EFI it would cost another 5K. Not worth that little bit of efficiency. I will make very close to the same power but may loose some MPG over the Whipple due to the Whipple taking less HP to make the same boost (the Whipple being a little more efficient). I hope not to upset the Whipple people out there but I feel this is a fact. I may need to throw another # of boost at the motor to make the same HP as the Whipple.
Looks like I let the EFI out of the bag also. So far M-5 Procharger with Accel EFI. I am on the fence with the block and components. But am very close to nailing that down. I am debating solid or hyd right now. My 509 is solid and I love it, it works for me my guys can adj the valves a few times in the summer and in the winter we can replace the lifters. But thinking from a cost standpoint the Hyd lifters would be the way to go as far as maintenance (yearly lifter changes), and I could build some more cubes. So in brief that is my issue.. And I am very close to an answer that will work for my project. I am thinking from a standpoint if I see a customer out. I can tell them I tear it down every 250-300 hours to be safe or do I tell them I have to adjust the valves a few times a summer and replace the lifters yearly? Constant maintenance to some people looks like you made bad choices all though we know better.

Philm 12-09-2009 06:28 AM

It sounds like a sweet project you have planned. I cant wait to see a 120mph speedo pegged :drink:

All you guys are planning bigger and faster and more powerful, and here I am planning to build mine down a bit. :party-smiley-004:

Keep us updated for sure Don

DonRoc 12-10-2009 02:13 PM

II finally made up my mind, I was struggling between a smaller CI motor and some RPM's and a Large motor and not so many RPM's the issue was in maintenance which really is not all that much of an issue (solid Vs Hyd cam), and which size prop I could use. I didn't want to go to 1.25 gears and didn't want to swing a monster prop on a single engine smaller boat. I wanted the boat to have more of an influence of where we were going than the prop..
So I decided to settle in the middle and order a Merlin III tall deck. It will be a 572ci with a 4.375 stroke and 4.560 bore. I expect to spin it around 6000-6100. I will boost and cam for that. That gives me a few hundred RPM's of safety margin for a pleasure boat,
That's all for now. 572, M-5 Procharger, Accel DFI. Next is to pick the heads.. I have been going around for a few months on everything so far, so a few more weeks wont hurt. Leaning toward the AFR 357's.

DonRoc 12-15-2009 07:26 PM

Procharger is building my system. They do much more R&D on the auto side. They have a new design they just came up with and tested that they are going to put in my M-5SC. They make there impellers and in fact there systems all in house. They are going to apply the new technology to my M-5 impeller. It will come on sooner, not surge, and make more HP for the same boost due to a more efficient design. They scheduled to start building my system this Thursday. I ordered a pulley to make 10psi @ 6200 RPMs. That should get me started. Procharger has a 540 with 8 to 1 compression and the same AFR 357 heads as a test mule that makes 1100hp with 10psi boost on pump gas.. My 572 should make a few more HP. I think that should get the job done. Any guess to how long my IMCO Extreme SC drive is going to last, lol
I have a post in Do it yourself Boating on a Budget, lol
572 DFI Procharger build
I will post here my progress.

Just got an e-mail from your dad. he ordered the block, and sounds like tomorrow we are going to figure out which pistons and order them.
I am going to freshen the engine which came out of it, it has good components. Crower crank and rods, Ross pistons, T&D shaft mount rocker set up. I think I am going to swap out the solid cam for a HYD put it together and do an upgrade for someone.. I est 550hp with the hyd cam. will be a nice upgrade for a 502/454 mag. Or if someone wants the HP500 power at a fraction of the cost.

Philm 12-15-2009 10:32 PM

Sounds like a way to recoup a bit of the cost.

Once you start putting it all together, we will certainly need some pics in here. :drink:

Good deal Don!

DonRoc 12-16-2009 08:03 PM

I cant wait to get some pictures and get my hands on the stuff. Once Performance Marine gets the block and pistons and bores it I can get it and start puting things together. I look forward to puting a face with the name and meeting you and your dad. Do you work with your dad?

TeamSaris 12-16-2009 08:09 PM

Sorta, im 16..Ive always dug boats, the marina egged that on. Ive been going to my dads races ever since I was born...this year we started racing together in Class 5 in OPA. We rigged the boat together an dbuilt the motors for it together. He also helped me restore the Challenger.

DonRoc 12-16-2009 08:46 PM

Very cool, nothing like working and spending time with dad. My dad has worked for me since 1998 when he retired from the corporate world. he's 70 now and threatens to retire, but I think he really likes it. He doesn't need to work.
When I was a kid my parents had a cottage on the lake so all my time was spent on the lake, that's how I ended up with the marina I had a boat there, the marina came for sale I sold my repair shop in Binghamton and here I am. My dad had a shop when he was in his 20-30's, so that's where I got my mechanical talent from. I remember being the tool guy, getting tools for him when he would be working on some car. Now its me and my son he is 8. I have him help me wrench on the cool stuff, like my NOS equipped snowmobile, or my NOS Camaro. He loves the speed. when he was 3 I got him a Honda 50. now he runs a Polaris 500 4 wheeler, and a Skidoo 380. Hope child services are not reading this, lol
These are the days you will look back on with a smile. What a great deal to run with you dad.
Wow 16 man what I would give to be there again. I would have never guessed the way you handle yourself on the forum Looks like Dad did a great job.

Haha thanks man...we got the sleds too...so far the first car is a 69 Jag XKE that were restoring...dad wont let me near the GTO :drink:

We had a 72 XKE E-type with removable hard top in the family, was a v12. very cool little car. it was red, sold about 15 years ago was original drivable but needed a little work. i remember it being pretty fast, but think the last time I rode in it I was your age. That was 30 years ago. it got put in storage and then 15 or so years later took out and sold. I hear they are worth a few bucks still. That sounds like a fun project.
Do you do paint work also?

DonRoc 12-17-2009 04:22 PM

Build update

Engine block Merlin III 10.2 with billet mains. Callies 4.375 crank and rods. Ross pistons, custom solid lifter cam, AFR 357's inconel valves, Accel DFI. Soon as the machine shop (Performance Marine) gets the parts and machines the block I will get it for assembly and take pictures. No rush we have all winter to dream....

A fast cat at that. Nothing on Seneca lake will take it, that's my goal the fastest boat on my lake. That does not count transients of course. There is always someone faster... But I do have race fuel and more boost available.... Now the holidays are over parts should start coming in...

innerrage 01-03-2010 08:49 PM

good luck with the new build. Jason at performance marine is a awesome person He helped me out with my motor years ago and my motor is still runing strong will always use him for any engine work.

Come on Don.....3 pages and not a single picture! We need to see something. At least a dirty bilge shot....lol

Somebody has to be bringing a 28-30 cat with 300's. In a 2' chop.....that's the race I wanna see.

The only cats that are on the lake regulary are a really nice 28 Daytona with a Ilmore in it (I rigged it) runs 95MPH he needs a -3 lower....
a 25 with a procharger I think he runs 110+
A 27 Daytona with a 525 runs about 92 dead even race with me last year, so 90mph is more like it...
And a 28-29 profile with a big blower sticking out.. Rumor has it he runs 115. there is a Fountain with twin 1075's I dont know much about it but its long and fast. That may be the race

Ok, you are killing me with the pictures.. Yeah believe me I cant wait. Kind of putting the horse in front but I promise a picturer of the Procharger in a few days just to post something....

TeamSaris 01-04-2010 05:32 PM

Theres 1 or 2 signle engine boats up here we built that could give ya a run...we built a 1100 hp quadrotor efi motor for a 25 Checkmate...that runs about 112. We have 900 in a 28 Profile cat running an honest 120...and then theres soem Skaters n stuff...dont try the skaters :drink: But out of any single engine v botom going 90 or up, Id want to be in a Krytponite...wayyyyy more stable than anything out there and Dons is set up right :drink:

I should post more pictures, maybe tomorrow. The bracket, and intercooler are really nice, everything is polished. And the beauty I got the M5SC, huge intercooler, and Accel DFI for less than a Whipple 4.0l and would still need efi or dual carbs on the Whipple. Plus with a little less low end than the Whipple maybe the drive will last a few hours more.. It will be interesting how it performs on the DYNO compared to some of the Whipple's.. I love the Whipple's also but for the price I had to try it. being a Procharger dealer I got a smokin deal and they are running a sale until Jan 15th, saved me another grand. That's why I ordered it before everything else, I couldn't pass up the deal. i almost bought a few to have in stock for the summer...

Being a Procharger dealer, I have done my share of them. None have came apart. although I will not do any with the Mickey Mouse blow thru carb setup. In fact I have a customer with a 24 Fountain and a 502 Mag that is running 9psi and it has near 3 years on it. I cant get him to turn it down and he has a 5, and 7psi pulley... And even with EFI you really need to get a wide band O2 sensor and set it up properly. With any blower the theory is the same. Run them lean or too much timing and it does not take long to blow them. All blowers do the same thing, some are just easier to set up and/or more efficient than others.
Mine is a SC so no worry of cross contamination.
I have no doubt it will work just perfectly.stop down to our fun run and see for yourself.
What do you think, I am considering remote start, that would be so cool.... wouldn't that freak people out looking at it on the dock? Plus allow me to warm it up before the high speed fly by.

Looks like it will be a blast. i really hope they are able to get the band Ball Breaker.. They are an AC/DC cover band and really off the hook. you would think AC/DC was playing. I might break down and take all three days off. But for sure Saturday and Sunday.
