A few more shots of the SMIDGEN at Magnum and and before the start of the 1973 Kirby Classic on Lake Erie. The only modification to the SMIDGEN were the speedmaster Volvo drives, no tabs or power steering. This was the first major offshore race on the Great Lakes, high winds produced 5' + seas, not the docile waters the veterans racers expected. At the start of the race the SMIDGEN spun out broke a outdrive and threw Wally Harper & Jack Mathes Jr into the water. Jack broke his arm and half of the Magnums deck was torn off.
I talked to Kevin Mathes about this and he said his Dad had a new deck, on the old hull, and the modifications on her in 6 weeks and ready to run there next race.

Thumper Ii, Zonker, & Smidgen
Found this story in a Powerboat Magazine about the 1974 Sam Griffith Race.
Bud,, Thumper II finished third, SMIDGEN won P class and nocig's ZONKER was second in Sport class. Not a bad showing for Lake St Clair Magnum's.

Sweet pic.....I think he is trying to steal some of your thunder mark......You better hurry up and post more old school pics to get him back....I would not stand for that kind of behavior.......lol
