Bummer, it looks like my order history doesn't go back that far. I'm pretty sure it was a standard shaft wiper from McMaster.
I remember that I had to machine the end cap pocket a little deeper to accommodate the seal thickness. Jeff |
temporarily installed one of the transom assys, to check for clearances and mounted my K-planes. Real estate on the transom gets crowded quickly lol.

Well the Holidays are over, but winter is still here, too cold to do any more 'Glass work, so I have been doing some sub assembly projects. Bought an old set of Zero Effort Throttles, and a trim switch from GLS Drilled the knob and bent a piece of tubing to run the wiring through. Now they are ready for Polishing or Powder Coating. Does anyone know what they are cast out of? They are not magnetic, but seem a little heavy and hard for aluminum. Not sure thay can be polished, so I still have not decided on which to do. I also rebuilt and assembled the Hynautic Rams and reservoir. Disassembled one of the Transom assemblies so I can take it for Powder Coating Monday. Little be Little...

Got one of the transom plates powder coated, waiting on the water hose and I still need to make the block off plate for the exhaust

Robert my sports transom looked like yours when I picked mine up from Florida, the salt water killed everything, I thought I would need a jack hammer to remove the transom plates. I found some clean fresh water Volvo drive plates on craiglist for next to nothing, all that was needed was a quick clean up & paint. The salt even attacked the bell housing & intermediate bearing assembly. Finding good used parts is the way to go like you did, I know what you have been up against, you are doing it RIGHT.. Mark

Found a pic how they set up the hydraulic steering & tie bar with your setup.

Thanks! I've never seen a pic of the setup. It gives me an idea. Wish the picture was a little clearer, but it's a definite step in the right direction.

The steering system was a Morse cable twin rack and pinion push pull bolted through each side of the transom on a plate mounted swivel seal. The result looked just like a twin hydraulic ram setup except of course it was all mechanical. The drives were fitted with Volvo steering plates which were mounted behind the gear shift cover by cutting a slot in the cover on both sides in order to provide the connection points for a ball joint then the same thing on the other side for the tie bar. The steering plate was bolted to the underside of the top half of the drive using the same bolt holes but longer stainless steel cap head bolts. The plate also had a transverse slot cut through it to allow for the gearshift link rod to pass through from the bell crank up to the gearshift lever. The system was simple and very easy. I could provide a sketch if anyone would require it. Kalaazar |
