[Skipped Fiberglass work today, and the whole weekend for that matter, but I did manage to start putting together some sub assemblies. I have all my Powder Coating done at LoKo coatings, they always treat me right. They are not the cheapest, but the stuff comes back perfect every time. I was able to assemble the Bell housing / PDS assemblies, along with my 280S K planes and I even had him do the original Fram cannister fuel filters. I put these things together, and stuffed them away ready to install at a later date.]
Your Volvo intermediate bearing assembly is just one example of the many different ones that they used. Every one of my Volvo boats has something different. Why Volvo made so many changes is beyond me ?????? |
To be fair, mine are actually made by Chrysler. Chrysler bought and re branded the outdrives from Volvo, but made their own engines(obviously) and marinized them. Chrysler had been making marine engines since the 1920's and jumped into the sterndrive market in the late 60s. They bought LoneStar boats in Texas and had a whole line of boats both power and sail, by the late 70s they made their own outdrive the "300"and even their own Jet drive, but they got out of the boat buisness in the early 80s and were forced to sell off the Marine engine division as part of their bankruptcy. Bayliner bought the outboard stuff from them and renamed them Force. Interesting side note is Chrysler stopped making the 440 for cars and trucks in 1978 so the marine and industrial division stock piled them and sold them into the early 80s, whent they ran out they marinzed the ford 460 and sold it as a Chrysler Marine engine. They even had exhaust manifolds that said Chrysler on them.
All that said there were a couple versions of the Chrysler Intermediate bearing assembly, the one piece ones like I have and 2 piece ones that used a bell housing with the Borg Warner round pattern like inboards and V-drives and an adapter like Volvo used in some Ford applications. |
Friday was still too cold for gel coating, so I took apart my old school Hynautics steering and cleaned up
The rams and reservoir. They polished up nicely if I say so my self. http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...pse31a4923.jpg |
Just waiting on the seal kits I ordered to reassemble the rams. Then I need to make some wing plates for the SP drives

I wish I had known you needed seals. I had bought them in bulk. I replaced the felt wiper with something a little more modern. Mark has a Cobra with the tie bar mount down low. It would be interesting to see how it is attached to the drive. Your project is looking great. The Chryslers will be too cool! Jeff |
Jeff,
With all that German food inside you are you flying back to the US cargo on a pallet ? We are waiting here in Florida for you, cold and soon to be very wet I am reading. However I am sure the weather will improve unlike England until next March/ April time. If you want to know about the low level Volvo steering tie bar fixing point I can explain how the Volvo factory did it in 1971, We had a brand new `E` drive setup back then which was so simple and very effective. I will tell you over a beer at OFF next week complete with napkin illustrations if you so wish. Have a good flight, see you soon Ian |
What did you use to replace the felt? I got 1 of the 2 kits yesterday and the seals look different than the originals. I am heading to the shop this afternoon to see if they will work.
|
Ian,
Did you show the Floridians how celebrate Guy Fawkes day? I'll have look at which seals I had used tomorrow. Jeff |
Thanks!

I don't know if they are the same, but here are plates for a 280 and a 270 we had made up
