Yes you can make it as long as you take your time. We had 8 jetskis all launch at Between the Bridges around 10am for claudios, sea conditions to claudios were 1 footers at most. We all stayed together and cruised at 40mph and 60+ in the smooth areas. On the way back seas picked up, we ran 1-2's with the occasional 3 footer, on average i bet we cruised around 25-30mph. Yeah we got all banged up but being summer and 85 degrees that day, I cant wait to repeat that day. Even if you have a 21 foot boat, remember its not a race!

With that said, I ran over there one day with a 17' Yamaha jet boat I used to have (years ago, fun little boat, but it would beat the chit out of you in the Sound). Running over we ran at 45 mph or so and had a smooth ride. Later on after spending a few hours at Greenport, the conditions didn't seem all that bad, until we came around the point and realized Plum Gut had some seriously big water. I mean HUGE! Thank god that little boat wasn't a bow rider, I honestly dont think it would have stayed afloat if it had been. I still can't believe it never went over. The GF was screaming and crying hysterically (which was real helpful under those conditions I might add!). The rest of the trip was 'only' 5'-6', which I was happy to see at that point. It took a long time to get home, but we made it. I never checked the weather forecast and paid the piper. The 'mythical' GF wouldn't go back on a boat for years after that day. I have to say it left a lasting impression on me too... it was humbling to say the least.
Anyway, a 21 should be fine as long as they aren't calling for significant wind or weather. Watch the marine forecast and as Justin suggested, the Sound is typically calmer earlier and later in the day.

Scot, so THIS is why your now going for a big cat! Has the fake GF been to Claudios since? You have alot of making up to do! Time to go big or go home. All seriousness, we left Newport Marina past year in a storm with driving rain. In the harbor there was like 2 footers. Coming out of the harbor, I could see the huge rollers going with the driving rain. My wife was very hung over and in the cabin trying to stay dry. Once we were in the ocean, it was raining so hard we couldnt even get on plane. The waves were higher than the side of the boat and the wife was crying and beggin me to turn around and go back to Newport.......................so there I was in Newport again.

we went to block island the weekend of the hurricane this summer (labor day) and the marine forecast was calling for 9-10's. you actually had to hammer it going up the swells and pull all the way back to let the boat surf down the back side. when we arrived at champlains there was less than 15 boats there and this was on labor day weekend.

We bought that little 17 so we could take it to lakes for weekend trips up north. We had a lot of fun with that boat and it was super easy to grab it and go without much thought... which is what got us in trouble in this case! The boat was sold the following spring as she refued to get back on the boat.

Sounds like you've had one of those trips too.

I always watch the marine forecast and radar now before i go out, but if I'm on a smaller boat, I still watch the weather closely. My Cougar is decent in rough water, but bigger is always better, so yes, my next boat will be at least 36'... vee or cat!

Okay but you are still comparing a straight bottom to a multi step no? And what was the price difference? And which boat has spun out more frequently? Just saying... I love all the boat comparisons they ate never apples to apples and all have there pluses and minuses. I by no means think the Tiger is Cigs best hull in fact I know it is not it is most likely the 39. For the record I would own an Outerlimits in a minute if it was the right one and was reasonably priced. For me I like Cigarette, Outerlimits,Active Thunder, Nortech, in that order and would buy anyone of them if they where the right set up for me. Each one in my opinion offers something unique. But like many things there is a give and take.

Just poking fun!LOL

With Tsunami for sale and going for a reasonable price, it sounds like Sutphen will be off Dan's list soon too! Next years Sutphen run looks to be an OL run instead! Or are you gonna host 2 runs Dan? Seems the Cigarette /Sutphen comparisions are over and we're now onto the Cigarette / OL comparisons! Frank, its not easy being a Cigarette owner around here, but you should be used to it by now. They are the boat that everyone is striving to compete with.

Innerrage one day we went over to claudios in really nice weather. Had all the kids with us and my daughter was about 2 years old. we were in my brothers 32 fever. The radio said only there were strong winds on the way. So we jumped in the boat fired it up and started to pull out, Something made us change our minds when we saw the rain coming in.
Within 15 minutes there was a torrential down pour, within 25 minutes there was 2 feet of water in the streets of Green port in front of claudios and we went into the caroseul. It was the worst storm wed ever seen. Guys were beaching 40 ft cigs! A guy from farmington in a 60 FT sport fisher said he ducked in cause he was getting soaked by waves in his fly bridge!. Theres a thread on it here in the NE section somewhere.
The point is your 21 will make it but the sound can be a NASTY BI TCH In a real hurry. So always keep that radio on.
No doubt in my mind had we been in the gut that day when it hit we would have probably swamped that 32 fever from what the reports were.
when the sound wants to come up and grab your azz it will, and theres not **** your gonna do about it!
We had a similar experience once before on a sunny day (no rain at all) coming around the point in a 21 nova near cedar island marina. My cousin who was agreen beret in Vietnam was on the floor of the boat.LOL My dad ran that boat thru waves as big as the freakin hull. It was only around the pt and then it was 5 to 6 fters again. which still werent fun but you werent scared for your life!
