I am speaking of offshore racing not racing in the bay. That 41 Apache should lap the class in rough. Its just my opinion and I am sure OPA and the class will figure it out.

Ron,
In 03 , Bob was running his black 41. Once he sold it , then he brought out his 47. Boats used to be place according to their abilities not the crews. Everybody has a rookie season it does not mean you will win or even be competitive. Forget it. !! This will go on for ever. There will always be sandbaging in bracket racing. One of the problems with our sport, everybody thinks they deserve to win simply by being able to afford a big boat. Wil |
In my opinion, for what it is worth, it is up to Smitty/OPA
with input from the teams in a class to classify each boat. |
In defense of Chiro One. They bought that boat expecting speed. I know they went through a lot of props trying to get it to run class 3. I know it is an 85 mph boat. Ocean race, out front. Anything else, trying to push that 41 takes a lot of power. Deal was if it stayed with the 850's it was good for class 4. If Gary worked his majic, another story. Something tells me, she'll be looking for class 3 this year. Never know. Smitty

Is this thread attempting to lower or raise boat count? Water conditions are everything, in class 3 medium to big water a 41’ apache will lap us, in small to medium the opposite is true.

Guys,
Please lay off the Apache, they originally came in as a class 3 boat and based off of the boats performance consulted with Smitty and it was approved to move into Class 4. I am not by any means trying to throw Smitty under the bus, but part of the job he faces day in and day out is to make tough decisions. They were a new team(together) and need time to gel. Now I personally think the world of those guys and at the end of the day, Simmons still won. Last year, Class 4 was a 4 pony show, which includes Simmons, Chiro, Typhoon, and towards the end Formula. On any given day, any one of those teams can win, now you add Jersey Outlaw to the mix, it should be the foundation to some great battles. As much as Bruce hates me, I know he has the talent and the boat underneath him to be in that mix and my memory is real fuzzy, but didnt "Absolutely Not" win Ocean City? National Guard has what it takes and hopefully we can bring Kilt up north. All everyone is doing by complaining about the Apache team is pissing them off to where they wont come back and we lost another race team, a good race team. Plus I am sure that no matter how much banter is said on these boards, Smitty has already talked to them and has a better handle on the situation than any of us keyboard artists.... |
Wil is typing from a great deal of racing experience, a great deal...Back in 03, and 04 the 32 single engine Bad Boy stayed with the 38 Augie Scarab EVERY lap, and they where both wide open. I believe, that no one is attacking the 41 apache owner, nor should they be, however it does look a little unique when all the other boats in class 4 are max 33-35'
Also you may not be using your best judgement (DrGary, Chiro)to question the logic, be-little, or put down potential friends and fellow racers. I know as a past crew, past racer, and younger racing enthusist, I have complete faith in Mr. Smith and his team to make some very tough and good decisions for the direction of OPA. I would love to see 3-4 Apache 41s run like they did in Atlantic city, NJ in 02,03 in class (3?) but they all ran in the same class because it was the sportsmen thing and obligation of the teams/ owners to do so. And the person/ 41 owner with the least racing circuit experience won (SC red hot). whatever you decide i agree with randy cause, no one should ever mess with the bull....dog. ps. someone should get willie and larry back into a boat that runs again...for more then 8 laps |
For the record I have no problem with the Chiro in class 4 with its current power. I dont think the boat can go any faster than 87-89MPH. To get it to go 95 would take big power that would be unreliable and may keep them on the side more than racing. They show at calm water races and never complain and in the big they have an advantage. But what they dont do is just show at only ocean races. This makes them team players in my book.
That boat in class 3 with current power would get eaten alive even with Don A. in it. I may only have 30 feet with a single but I am up for the challenge. Lets not forget this is P class racing where everyone has a place to race. As sits its a class 4 boat. If they want to move up thats up to them and Smitty I applaud them for being a steady team at every OPA race. MD |

New teams are coming, and reading. Play nice.
Just spoke to Niel Wobie yesterday. Looks like the new owners of ZIP EXPRESS are looking at OPA. Welcome aboard guys, don't be shy. Smitty |

Rick, Class5, a little self serving huh?:drink:
Speaking for our class(twins)that is proposed, Simmons is talking retirement(also says boat is not capable of 90), Dont really know what the status of Chiro is so lets say they are coming back(also says boat is not capable of 90), Jersey Outlaw will do a race here and there, ok Formula is in as well. So now you go from 3-8 boats in every race down to 1-2(on a good day 3) in a "new class". yawn, been there done that, over it.... My thoughts are to bring back class 2 and leave the rest alone, then have class meetings in St Clair about possible changes for 2012 which then each class rep can bring them to Smitty and he and the board can go from there. Not have ongoing discussions on any offshore forum. As far as the twin vs. single battle, I have been on both sides and knock on wood was able to to "build a boat for the class" and now everyone wants to cry about it. It always goes back to us as racers are our own worst enemy. Safety is my only concern about moving up to 90. I mean hell Dev and i proved that if you get cut off, she'll buck ya in a heartbeat attempting to make an evasive move @ 81.4 mph. Johnny, I respect what you are saying and you have some very valid points, however, you have to remember that when your boat had a 500EFI it ran 80-82 mph all day long and back in the day competed against "The Flying Condo" and sometimes even beat him. I dont know the exact specs on your current motor, but it certainly looks like it has a lot more ponies than 520-525HP. So in theory, it should easily be capable of mid to high 80's. I also realize that back in the day I was getting gas for .77 a gallon so obviously 2011 is a lot different than 2001-4. Smitty my thoughts are above, I do request that if changes are to be made they be made yesterday so us florida guys can get out and test test test all winter and be prepared for next season. |
Mark,
Please call Smitty or Bob Owens if you have any concerns about the boat(s) I race in and we can leave it at that. I really dont have time for your childishness Trent |

If you don't want to deal with my childness why did you bring me into this you started. I don't have to call Smitty. He stated (while you "were building a boat for a class") that the boat is a P-3 boat before Key West. It has been quoted on this thread. Joe and Jackie ran that boat at 105 and you are afraid to go 90. I was wrong you are not arfaid to run the boat on the edge you are to affraid to run anywhere near the edge.

The way I understood it, The Kilt boat was borrowed for KW, and that team is supposedly building a new boat for next year. Regardless, Smitty did say it would have to run in 3, if it were to race in OPA. I dont know why Trent brought that boat up anyway. So....Im glad we cleared that up.
Simple misunderstanding.......................carry on. |
Sorry for getting out of line. More upset w/myself for having a race boat that's been a lawn ornament for the past year, take care.

What is the outcome regarding class 4? So far I've read lets leave it the way it is, limit length at 38 ft, change mph to 90. As of today I still don't know what direction to take. I need something in stone.
