Winter Upgrades?
Anyone else besides MiamiBoys doing any upgrades?
My engine is in the garage ready to go to the dyno. After a baseline, I plan on tearing it down, installing Jessel Shaft Rockers, larger injectors, and a custom ground cam that was done by Marine Kinetics. Maybe then I'll be at the 648HP that my previous dyno sheet said!! A true 650 HP should get me in the mid 70's with my 28. Anyone else? |
Re: Winter Upgrades?
I've been stripping mine down for a complete redo. all cosmetic no mechanical. The gel coat work should be done in about 7 weeks. Repowder coating all the accessories, all new guages, new dash panels & switches, throttle controls, and of course engine pretty stuff from Fred. Oh yea ,I'm rebuilding the carb also.
Kirk, post some pics. Tom |

Re: Winter Upgrades?
duunoit, was that the older race boat that was in florida, and was a friend of Jo's?
|
Re: Winter Upgrades?
yep, sure is. I bought it back in October. It's turning out to be more of a project than I thought but that's how "projects" are. I'm having to reglass the outdrive hole and move it a little. I'll take pictures as I go and make a new thread. I'm still hoping for an early spring launch.

Re: Winter Upgrades?
Duunoit, looks like a cool ride. What are you doing for pwr?
The winter should go by better with different "project" threads. I'll start mine soon after a few more pics are taken. Storm what's next? |
Re: Winter Upgrades?
The plan is a 540 about 625hp...
I've got some other stuff that I need to get rid of first. I've still got plenty of work (fiberglass and rigging) that I need to do to keep me busy until I can get it. |
Re: Winter Upgrades?
Chris, I always thought that was a cool ride. Best of luck getting it up to par.
Tom, nothin on the burner but 2400sq ft of construction(addtion). So I guess I'll hang around giving worthless (boatless) input. :D |
Re: Winter Upgrades?
We're just rigging a 28 for a customer with a Konrad and new panel.
I'll post up pics when I get 'em. |

Re: Winter Upgrades?
Lofty, a 28 Pantera in the bay area, where at ive never seen one in person. If possible id like to see it. Thanks, HIMES
|
Re: Winter Upgrades?
Lofty , was this an older boat with a trs set up that you are converting to a Konrad , or a new hull that you are completing ? Good luck , this will be the first Pantera with a Konrad that I know of , let us know how she runs .
|
Re: Winter Upgrades?
Himes, this boat's been in the Bay Area for years. Give me a call (925.952.4240) it'll be in the shop for a while. We're doing alot of work to her.
talon25, this is an old TRS boat. Should be a great little ride with the Konrad. It'll be one of many Konrad boats we've now rigged in the Bay Area. |
Re: Winter Upgrades?
Lofty is that a twin Konrad upgrade? What year is the boat?
|
Re: Winter Upgrades?
IRONMAN, this is a single 28. It's an 89'... I think. It's got a 572cid with a B&M and intercooler. Not sure on the HP but we'll be talking with the engine builder about freshening up next week so I'll get some good numbers then.
We've done twin Konrad conversions but not to a Pantera. |
Re: Winter Upgrades?
pics ?
|
Re: Winter Upgrades?
Was that '89 a twin that was converted to a single (like mine was)? I don't think that Pantera started making the 28 as a single until the early 90's.
|
Re: Winter Upgrades?
duunoit, I was going to ask about the 6 half moons in your engine bay but now I understand. Pantera must have made a few singles in the 80's , I just got one. It is amazing how many boat hulls were so far ahead of propelsion system designs of their time. Pantera, Cigarette, Shadow,Formula, Donzi, Scarabs, .etc...

I wondered the same thing when I first started looking at it. I was emailing Pepe about it and he said that he had an old picture of it. When he sent it, I was thinkging that's not the boat I'm looking at... then I found out a little more.
|
Re: Winter Upgrades?
That is a great shot.
|
Re: Winter Upgrades?
Pepe said that it had some bad a$$ small blocks and speedmasters in it then. I wish I had the parts.
|
Re: Winter Upgrades?
I don't know, I think that one biggie is the way to go in an under 30footer. unless you are going to bimini alot.
|
Re: Winter Upgrades?
that would be a long ride from Tennessee :D
I just need it to warm up a little more so I can start doing the fiberglass work... |
Re: Winter Upgrades?
I need it to warm up a LOT here in upstate NY. How high is your X going to be?
|
Re: Winter Upgrades?
I'll have to check my notes, but I think that Jo said that he is cutting the full pleasure at 17.5. I my boat doesn't have a cabin in it so Jo said that I could probably go another 1/2" higher. That's what I'm going to do. If it doesn't work out, I have a 1/2" spacer that I can put in it. I might go another 1/2" higher than that spacers are a heck of a lot cheaper than shorties.

Re: Winter Upgrades?
New name, new rub rail, drive & tab indicators and carbs sent out to Nickerson. :D :D

Re: Winter Upgrades?
The 575 SCI is coming out and will be 4-sale (145 hrs)
I'm buying a HP500EFI with Whipple from a friend, it's tweaked a little (Done right, he's more anal than I am) and dyno'd 790- hoping for low to mid 80's at the 1120 ft we boat in. I replaced the lower late in the season with a fresh Imco after I found a shallow spot/ ledge. Took the upper down (XR/ITS) and was amazed at how great it looked- upgraded the vert to a newer improved part (Thanks for the tip Sterndrivespec). I'm confident that the XR will live just fine with the new power all else being equal- and missing the ledges:) |
Re: Winter Upgrades?
Catitude are you getting the one from up here in upstate NY? Will the sci go under the stock hatch in the 28?

Re: Winter Upgrades?
Sounds really nice, I wanted it for my 28 but the budget is a little less so I can do some other stuff. Good luck with it. I don't know Charlie, I am a few hours north of there. Chris

Re: Winter Upgrades?
You guys know of anyone running sportmaster lowers on a twin powered Pantera ??? I'm looking for some set-up idea's. They're set at a 17 inch transom height...I'm using XZ uppers, the sporty's have a 1.36 gear ratio...any and all input would be appreciated.

Seems like there were a lot of general threads about the sporty when it first came out. I believe the consensus was you gained eye candy, perhaps control but same or less speed due to more wetted surface area. The Imco is said to be faster but will only benefit if you are running 80+. When I had my 25' Daytona I had a whippled 454 mag- I changed from a stock lwp bravo with 28 labbed to a 2" shorty with .5" spacer and labbed 30 and picked up 11 mph (99.0)- I miss that boat, would run in the 90's any day of the week and was perfect size for the lakes I go to. Anyway- with the right boat, there is a lot to gain in setup, but a heavy v-hull without steps isn't going to get huge gains. |
Re: Winter Upgrades?
sounds like the drive was very low on that daytona from the factory and that is why you saw such a jump in performance with the shorty?
|

Actually- the factory set up guy told me there was no more to gain and that it was already set high- planing did take the right touch before and after, a 4 blade hydromotive could not get it on plane. The "location" had the top of the bravo kissing the rub rail, so I'd say it was the highest they intended when the molds were made- i don't know if they changed this when they updated to a rounder/canopy a style a yr or so ago. It was still a great handling predicatble boat 1.5" higher:) |

Here is the really fun part, Power will be the 509" 525 for this year from my 24, the 24 will get a 454 for now and next winters project will be a 555 or 572 for the 28. Fun Fun Fun! Maybe even a Blowamotr if the drive cooperates.

Re: Winter Upgrades?
Keep the pics rolling. The pressure to keep posting pics will help you stay motivated.
I will make you a deal on my switch panel that you can't refuse. I can't wait to see the progress :D |
Re: Winter Upgrades?
Red stripes are coming off, I may go plain blue or some very basic vinyl stripes. I can't wait to see yours back from the shop. Now you see why i need the switch panel Thanks, Chris

Re: Winter Upgrades?
ironman, maybe some green eyes on a blue back round.
Nice looking boat! What kind of drive is there? I'm sure you'll make that dash look nice. Keep up w/ the pics. Where do you guys find these, when not even advertised. |
