My 28 Pantera
#61
I've got the Dana shtoguns on mine now and they don't do much and are a bit rattly. My buddy just put the Gibson's on his Gun and hasn't stopped complaining about how quiet the boat is. From my boat though they sound good. Rumbly but not too loud.
I had a set of the Eddie Marine (or similar other make) insert mufflers on my 24 and I though they were a good compromise and were out of sight which is nice. I'm probably going to go with the Imcos or the Gibsons when its time to replace the shotguns.
I've also heard a lot of people like the "donkey d1cks" because they're silent at idle but wide open when running, but I can't get past the look of them...

Albert I will definitely check for a vacuum leak that's a good idea. I just don't recall seeing many vacuum lines though!
Mike a vacuum leak doesnt meen it is only the hoses, I meant on the intake or on the base plate of your carburator. Just check to see if everything is nice and tight. Some carbs come with vacuum lines that need to be plugged check that also.

yea I here ya the donky D's are some ugly pipes. My whole deal here is that I have this awesome sounding motor and I just wanted it a little quieter and I think that might just be a hard thing to accomplish. The Gibsons really don't sound bad they just are sooooo quiet so I know how your friend feels. Maybe if I knew they would get louder over time (like break in) it wouldn't be that bad but they have no baffling material so I just think they will stay quiet. You know. Man if I could figure out a way to drill them out some maybe that would work. LOL

Its funny, I love how my boat sounds for about 15 minutes and then I'm ready to turn it down! 4,500 rpms for 45 minutes starts to wear on you a bit (coming back from Catalina is worse than going over though). I'm actually planning on getting an intercom!
I'd check out those Eddie/Hardin slip ins. You could even pop them out when you get out of your creek.

sorry, mike...yea i meant the butterflies.
kinda sux... i love custom motors, but its nice to have the builder nearby, incase of any little situations.
I like Mesa Balancing, but how was he going to check it out if anything happened? I found JC, who is local, and took care of me. Thats whats nice about merc... its safe, but just doesn't get me going like a custom motor.
Does cobra have any affiliation w/ a VA/MD guy who could come check it on their dime?

Mike, there is is a noise regulation in Maryland. Most people don't get bothered, but I would leave the mufflers unless they slow you down. If they have an internal rubber flap, they may get louder as the rubber gets tired of keeping 750hp quiet!

Well I decided on keeping the mufflers and went for a short ride last night and well to make a long story short I now have only 1 muffler. I don't really know what happened but I was starting to accelerate and then the boat became suddenly loud again. Stopped the boat shut the engine off and damn there was only one muffler left. I had those things very tight in fear that I might lose one, and well it happened. I don't think that the motor has that much exhaust pressure to blow one off. Unless one of the bolts came loose (which I doubt)! I had the bolts tight enough that it was collapsing the grove where collar snugs itself around pipe. Oh well more money down the drain.
So I guess if anyone has a used or new Gibson Bullet muffler that they want to get rid of let me know. I know I can't be the only one this has ever happened too! I hope
One other thing after I lost the muffler when trying to shut the motor off the motor did not want to shut off. It must have run for at least 10 to 15 seconds before it finally died. I know this must be related to my carb problems I'm having. It's been a long time since I had this problem and I just can't remember what it's related to. I've been running injection on my race car for some time now and I'm dumb about these carb things now. I need to get back in the game
