A radio direction finder (RDF) is a device for finding the direction to a low frequency radio source. Due to low frequency propagation characteristic to travel very long distances and "over the horizon", it makes a particularly good navigation system for ships, small boats, and aircraft that might be some distance from their destination.
Sounds oldshool, I'll stick to GPS(or following the second fastest boat)

Considering they followed the coastline, your numbers from the intracoastal distance may not have been far off. I think my distance was based on straight-line, but I must admit that I'm not 100% sure. Maybe Jo can chime in with a real distance and average estimate.
