Wanna Race P4 class in a 28 Pantera
#21
Blah ! Blah! Blah!
I have yet to see any Pantera 28 run the wild speed posted up on this site . I guess it is wise to say that Von Bongos', with a 575
SC and standoff(ITS) is a true benchmark . Being a newer hull ,
I am sure you all know the rocker was changed in '96 , '97
to correct the "bo rise " problem.
I will have my '95 Pan 28 in the water in 3 weeks ( power by 540 Cubes / 575 HP ) and we'll see what this beast will run .

My 2002 Pantera 28 with twin 550 Horse motors , 16.5" X was running 86 mph on GPS - Twin 28 P Bravo 1 @ 5200 RPM .
Lets see , 1100 HP =86 mph . Hmmmmm.
My 95 boat came with a 454 HP series - Yes , only 128 of these motors made . This boat would turn a 23 " 3 blade at 5200 RPM which netted a speed of 62 mph . Yes 62 on GPS .. So as far as all those rediculous speed numbers , call Norm Teague - He tested the boat with an HP500 and pulled 67 mph - Sounds like accurate #'s to me . Still a great boat though, albeit a slow one .
It sounds like Bruces' boat has a CG problem - If the prop slip is there , the bow is not coming up . A 5 blade prop will only pick the transom higher out of the water and aggravate the problem . It sounds like someone lost a drum of resin in the construction of that hull , and it ended up in the bow .
Bruce , have you weighed that boat yet ??
We want to know the true weight of the stripped race lay up you have .
thanks

Sure !
If I can get the dam thing together -
Motor is done - Waiting for bolsters -
Looking for an XR drive . Motor will go in this weekend ( I think) .
Full hydraulic steering should be here tomorrow .
I just hope it runs faster than Bruces' boat .

Hi Jerry,
I do not know where you got the information on the rocker on the 28 mold because the 28 mold has never been touched since we began laying up boats with it back in 1978.It is exactly the same.
I do not think Von Bongo, Danger Kitty , Mike Carter , or my self need to exagerate speeds. These are all on GPS. Next time I will take a picture and post it on this board of the GPS.Tim Gallagher a member of this board just purchased a 1999 28 with twin 502 MPIs 415 HP Mercruiser packages and got 82 MPH on GPS.
Von Bongos boat here in Miami in salt water with myself driving and passenger with 1/2 tank of fuel got 78 MPH on GPS with 200 more RPM to go in 90 degree weather on a brand new boat.
Yes, the 1994 that you purchased now to race had a 450 HP Mercruiser motor that had alot of running time and a boat that weighs 400 ponds more than a newer boat with the wrong prop on it when you tested it.
The other 28 that you owned you told me you never dynoed those motors and you guess they were pumping out 550 HP.
With a pair of Mercruiser 500 EFIs I get 93-94 MPH on GPS.
Todd Blythes Carrabas P5 boat will top out at 72-73 MPH on a GPS speedo with a single 500 EFI in a full pleasure 28.Ask him yourself. He has won many races last year to prove it.
There is a big diffrence from a 3 man bolster boat ( race ) to your full pleasure boat in performance due to the weight, drive leverage, and 1 less drive in the water. You know that.
Powerboat Magazine tested 2 28s with 500 EFis in the same year 2001.One test was conducted in 4-6 footers where BOB Teague felt the boat would run 72 MPH on his report and the other test was conducted in flat water. The 500 EFI that was in the boat was running on 7 cylinders and extremely fat and eventually after the test had to be rebuilt by a Mercruiser dealer. Bob Teague was the one that noted to me to look into it.Ask him yourself if you do not believe me.
Jeff Mathias owns our F1-71 Black race boat from 2001 and with a 700 blower motor here in Miami we got 93 MPH before the drive let go. In fresh water in Cincinati, Ohio he is getting 89 MPH on GPS. He is building a new 800 HP blower and going after 100 MPH.
Many of our customers have won many races with the boat including our selves in the last 25 years.I hope you win many races this year with your Pantera 28.
I have always said handling is more important to me than the top end speed of a boat.
Let me know how your 28 turns out.
Regards,
JO

Hey Jerry,
I think if we own the 28 molds for the last 25 years I would be certain to say that there is not a soul that would know them better than ourselves.
Take a tape measure from your 1995 28 now and compare it to your previous 2001 28 that your friend owns. You will see they are exactly the same.

As far as Von Bongo , I never said he was exaggerating speed .
He gave the honest # of "74.9" mph . Keep in mind , this is a 575
SC Merc motor with ITS setback .
I never said your boats were bad , or that you were full of it . I believe you are the one trying to sell your boats on over-exaggerated top sppeds .
Oh , by the way , I heard the Carrabbas boat only runs 68 mph .
It was supposed to be an F1 boat , but obviously could not compete due to its limited top speed .
As far as BJ goes , he stopped running the Pantera 28 and switched to a more competitive boat - an Activator 27 built by
someone who knows all about how a boat should and does run!
Not by a group who builds "their new 35 " and takes credit for the design . By the way , why was it named "Survivor "
HHHMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!
