Some of you people make it sound like if you are in a PR, your are free to do whatever you want.
Let's not forget the first and foremost regulation everyone MUST follow when on the water!
It's called:
"RULES OF THE ROAD".

Also, at what point do you forget about your own personal responsibility?

If you're getting into a boat that runs over 100 mph, you already know what the dangers are. You already know what precautions you should take! Well it shouldn't take anyone to tell you that you have to have it! You should already have it.
And if you don't, that was your personal responsibility and choice!
Bare minimum jackets are required and a must have required by law for each person on board.

So, follow the "Rules of the Road" and you will see alot is pretty much covered already in terms of speed, passing etc.

No doubt a lot good ideas will come out of a safety meeting. I just didn't see the need to have it in a national magazine in order to organize it.
Especially when steps were already being taken to improve safety.

I'm a capitalist and a freedom of choice guy. Let each type of run build it's own house and let the public (us/you/them) continue to choose if they want to attend each year. I think it's that simple. Keep racing formats as a rule within the racing world. Most poker runs (besides the mega-runs which I don't personally care for) are local events for fun that usually generate funds for a charity. If someone steps out of line with gross negligence simply restrict their ability to re-enter the next year. Peer pressure and humility will take care of a lot of problems.

As far a Ron's article, it's his opinion and perspective on things and if nothing else gets you to think a little. Nothing wrong with that.

Oh it gets people to think!!! Think just how wrong he and EBM were ...

If the APRA holds Annual Safety Summits already, just what was the purpose behind the EBM article to hold a completely separate meeting with a room that would only hold 20 or 25 people?

See Poker Runs America Latest Issue for their response!

Gee Mike,

You like going both ways huh?

You commend the NJPPC for having rules and sticking to them, and then follow it up with accusing them of ignoring the Rules of the Road.???

Just so you know the facts!

I personally took the time to notify the fisherman of Barnegat Inlet with advance notice that not only the Poker Run was coming on certain days but also made them aware of the OPA Powerboat Race in Ortley Beach. The US Coast Guard would also make an announcent on the VHF prior to the Poker Runners arriving. Anyone that you may know of who complained may have been the one or two that decided to anchor or drift fishing the channel and may have mistaken someone that wasn't in the Run. You know that they are all labeled "One of them Cigarette boats".

I felt it would be a good idea to inform the members here that there will be a Poker Run this Saturday.
It will depart from Toms River between 11:00am & 11:30am. All of the groups will head south from there.
My guess is that the event should last approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
There will be a group going out to the ocean, so if you fish the channel leading up to the Barnegat Inlet, keep an eye out for us as we will for you. I estimate that we should be in that area by 12:00PM But that is only an estimate.
This event will be Rain or Shine.
As a courtesy to our fellow boaters, I just thought I would bring this to your attention.
Have a great weekend!

On a side note:
Next week on Friday August 12th, a different boat club "OPA" will be running an Ocean Offshore Power Boat Race off of Ortley Beach.

Starts 1:00PM!
Leaving out of the Manasquan Inlet probably around 12 Noon.
They will NOT be closing the inlet and the race boats will be following all Rules of the Road.
Sometimes things do change. If I hear something different, I will keep you all posted.

Everyone I have ever taken has enjoyed it.

Thank you Lucididee for a fine pic of the Barnegat Lighthouse!

Thumbs up Re: Extreme boats magazine Poker Run Article ?!?!?

Some great news for a change:

Boating deaths drop in Northeast

Recreational boating fatalities are down for the second consecutive year in the Northeast waters covered by the 1st Coast Guard District.

There were 39 fatalities in 2005, down from 41 in 2004. The 2005 figure is a 40-percent reduction from 1998’s 65 recreational boating fatalities, says Al Johnson, the district’s recreational boating safety specialist.

The district is made up of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, a portion of New York (including Long Island) and the northeastern section of New Jersey.

In 2005 manually powered vessels, such as canoes and kayaks, accounted for 20 deaths, while motorized vessels accounted for 19.

Most recreational boating fatalities are the result of a fall overboard or a capsize caused by inexperience, inattention or inappropriate behavior, Johnson says.
