Dave How have you been? Those "S" Boats had a higher speed than the open class sometimes, they were allowed every modification like the big boats, but were limited to 750 CI instead of a 1000 CI, I seem to recall speeds in the teens ,when talking to them in Smitty"s shop at Cougar 188 st ,I will check and get back.(seem, key word)

Jupiter Sunsation 06-03-2010 12:37 PM

Active Fun: fully optioned (a/c, gen.) 38 w/525's ran 82-84
Twin 700/NXT boat also fully optioned runs right at 100. Twin Cobra 750/Imco boat runs low 90's.

Forgot about John's boat! The only issue he has is running out of fuel. The tank isn't oversized enough to handle the fuel burn of the engines! He has run out of fuel at two poker runs I attended, one "outage" was about 100 FEET from the fuel dock!

The May issue of Performance Boats magazine has a two page spread of this beautiful boat on p. 76. I know a lot of guys don't like all those pastel colors but to me that boat is drop-dead gorgeous!

Thanks Steve, just been smokin busy and in and out of the shop a lot. Had some big boat jobs i had to travel for and have only been able to check in from time to time. These threads move fast and i really enjoy catching up on them. I really get a kick out of the old race photos. When i was in high school in the 80's it was funny my friends all had some sports hero they idolized, football baseball whatever. Me i had boat raceing related stuff, they had no idea what the heck i was talking about. It was a real treat to get a feature issue of boating with a Cig on the cover because it was still pretty rare. I still have lots of old mags and a few programs from back then. Keep the good stuff coming

Steve 1 06-03-2010 01:52 PM

Down here the offshore made the papers and with Cigarette,Donzi,Magnum,Factories and the Marine stadium races. Good times

The last year 1984 the Cat with the drives all the way up The boxes were above the transom 116-117 Remember In 1982 Danny won the "S" title those boats ran faster than the open boats .

That 32 Cougar was built by Asia craft same as the Arneson #6 Boat the second 38 wood Cougar IMHO,Now when I was at Cougar (188 st) working on a customers boat , they came through and a drop dead Beautiful Filipina was in the mix, I could not focus on my work for the rest of the day.

When I was in high school in Boca Raton I worked for Air and Sea Charters. They owned a 53' sailing catamaran, a 45' monohull sailboat, and a 33' Powerplay SS. The powerplay had twin 415hp 502s and of course Bravo One drives. It was a white hull with green interior, and I think it had pink and seafoam green graphics. As always it was a great running boat and looked great, the special thing about this boat as the hours. It was run everyday for almost 15 years. God only knows how many hours were put on her but the boat held together. I don't remember what happenned whether it was stolen or sold but the boat had some nasty 540's in it before it disappeared.

They had a good glass crew and used top shelf fabric like advanced textiles in those days and a Vinylester lay up.
