That boat may have been built/lay-up in Hollywood by a subcontractor.

We could also do a 45 on the outboard corner like the 25' & 38' Gunnels were finished ,that would look cool with the molding gone.

That one was beat up and probably hadn't seen a cover in ten years from it's condition. A few soft spots on the floor, some delamination on the front deck and the gel coat was chalked bad. 1988, looked a lot like an early scarab. The hull was still solid and transom looked fine.

Some people that own those old ones swear by them, 88 from the hollywood lamination shop and rigged in Lauderdale.

Man original paint (Imron) even looks like a piece of a sundance marine decal ,the boat could be an 86 or 87

If you're using this as a basis for comparison I'd take the time to crawl around a '97 and up, even a '94. Those will stack up against anything.

how about a 92, 25' . The open fish boat shows how pp started out with cobra heritage ( by a french guy no less)and vastly improved keeping the great hull design. Indy you had a really nice boat and the new mold is way to go. Btw, I bought the pp fiberglass shop and contents at the auction and all of the materials and tools I got were fist rate and creative. Still using it today on all sorts of repairs. 3nd pic is my old cobra (the sweden sticky boat). Steve, best thread ever, and yes that was a sundance marine sticker.

Sir thank you for the nice complement.

Powerplay 38 Corebonding, I mentioned the core perforations that Danny even hand drilled on one occasion ,you can see the port side is done and that is exactly right,The excess priming resin and Corebond adhesive has been removed from the bond-line and is on top of the sheet ready for cleanup giving us the desired 1 MM bondline.

Steve when you bag the core down do you still use a perforated bleeder ply and breather ply? Are there any times when you dont use these two consumables when bagging?

Dave Hi ,I use bubble pack under the bag for core bonding (1/2") bubbles faced down, to allow the excess paste and priming resin to come to the surface this method provides some space for their accumulation , even with the Epoxy core bonding materials such as Spa Bond same mentality. Thick bond line is asking for trouble after 1 MM look out. The picture looking at the edge of the corecell you can see impressions the bubble pack left in the paste on the edge.

That Yellow Boat was "Nicks Italian Kitchen", I think when built and there was a picture of it in the Powerplay offices somewhere,Laidup at Elswick's joint back in the day.

northernoffshore 07-20-2010 04:32 PM

Yes it was. The nick's boat is now owned by MDG in maryland, being restored. The picture from the office went along with it too.

Steve 1 07-20-2010 09:19 PM

Dave you can see a bit of the bubble pack here.

Boat taps the door on 100 mph and was still being dialed in. It has been on Lake Mead a few times and has only seen the Pacific a couple of times in its lifetime. The owner is a fanatic who has a neat collection of cars/boats all of which are stored in a museum quality warehouse.

This is easily the most perfect Danny built Powerplay in existence. The boat is not for sale and being that the guy still owns the car his wife drove to high school (he located, restored and gave it to her as a present) you can probably expect it to be in his collection forever......

Is the owner of this boat Rusty West? GREAT posts Steve1 !!!

Whatever happened to some of these 33' race boats? Like XXX Muscle, the Ettore boat, my old 33 race set up but never raced??? (it looked like the Two Can boat, but had Tweety and sylvester the cat)

What can you tell us about these boats Steve? I've been to the factory about 10 times over the years, probably met you a few times!!! I knew Dan and John.

The B1 a member on here has it ,the Muscle was in the Bimini race ,I put up a picture of your boat. I most likely met you but sometimes I was in a closed shop doing something away from view. There is a Guy DareDevil who keeps a pretty good track of the old race boats and Of course Danny. Best Regards

Steve 1 07-21-2010 12:07 AM

Powerplay 38 Coreing bottom, the corebond has been placed with a notched trowel and I am setting core that has been primed and ready to bag in place.

Powerplay 38 Corebond Adhesive being placed, I have 50 Minutes to trowel it on ,Place the panels and also give the vacuum time to seat the core properly.

Thanks for replying. I just read this entire thread..... took 2+ hours!! Holy crap this is THE BEST OSO THREAD EVER!!! Steve1, thank you "sir" for taking the time to enlighten us all on boatbuilding and especially Powerplays. IMHO, the 33' Powerplay is the best looking boat ever made!

DareDevil 07-21-2010 12:24 AM

semper, can't agree more with u !!!!

BTW, your X PP is in Alabama still...maybe not for to much longer tho..lol:party-smiley-004:

Steve 1 07-21-2010 12:29 AM

Bagging complete the surfaces sanded and Hotcoated it takes about a 11/2 Oz of resin per square foot, but do not omit this step.

You are very welcome and a Humble thanks for supporting the thread, I am very partial to Danny's Powerplays and even at the Geneva show I compare to the Powerplays and they win. My eye always catches something that would never pass the Boss.

Steve, Why were some bottoms cored and others not? And what are the pros and cons for each?

The name of the game is stiffness and Coring gives the ability to build a very light but stiff structure. The science of core selection I will not touch upon.

But for a given design there is a "proper weight" (Tested in the gulfstream),What Danny did was build the boats at the optimum weight he got the stiffness needed without coring the entire structure (example 38 Bagged sides and deck). and he paid the price in materials we had the best vinlyester system around in those days Advanced textiles/Brunswick/Vectorply for fabric ,Cook/CCP Gelcoat,Corecell and ATC Bonding systems.

glassdave 07-21-2010 12:17 PM

what is meant by "up bagging"? I have seen you use that term before.

Steve 1 07-21-2010 12:17 PM

BTW Thanks to Heather and Nort for putting up with me.
