No he had his drives on the #6 Boat I was just reflecting on the origin of that 38 which was the second 38 footer Cougar built the first 38 (wood) was built in England and went to Fayva

Cat here is the Boat when it got the Michelob Sponsorship, I put a 3/8" Aluminum plate across the transom among other things when it was at Cougar on 188 st for repair.

That's not the wood boat is it? Michelob is one of my favorite old school raceboats. :) How fast was it, how long did it race, how many championships did it win?

I never understood why they didn't put canopies on those boats...

Yes that was the wood 38 Arneson Cougar I spent a lot of time under the deck rewiring it LOL it was Wood.

I believe it won Two world titles.

The Boat had a lot of weight forward (Fuel and cockpits) Plus the engines they had were not the best ( I cleaned up pieces of GM valves out of the bilge) ,we got 102 out of the cat, then shifting the weight and KS&W Engines it picked up speed big time.

That's the first 25' I've ever seen with a single outboard.

Not too sure about that upholstery color however.

nice roostertail and run a nice 65 mph at WOT!
i hope you enjoyed

Ludo, What props? The 33 ran 74 with 300's. The 300x's should be 2-3 MPH faster than the 300's. I believe the tested boat had 23" mirage (plus) props.

ludo73 07-15-2010 02:26 PM

chopper 28, and engine mounted damn high

I own this boat. It’s been upgraded, year after year. Currently has a pair of 200 Opti’s and updated graphics, as shown in the top picture at the dock. If anyone's interested, it's for sale. Powerplays are *by far* the best boats I've owned, and that includes both of my 24' & 28' Skaters, as well as a few yachts. I recently added a 33’ PowerPlay Center Console to my stable; the last one ever built.

beautiful 33'. How fast with those motors?

XSNSX 07-15-2010 03:03 PM

65mph on GPS with a pair of stock 250 EFI Mercs, which really surprised me. I wasn't expecting much over 60mph. It was a cold day, some light wind chop on the bay, light on fuel. In fact, I was so surprised, I called Danny while I was on the water and asked him what he thought the boat should run. Without so much as a pause or a blink, he said 65. Right on the money!

XSNSX 07-15-2010 03:06 PM

I've been a long time fan of boats built by Danny. Long before 5-axis CNC mills and the perfect pieces of foam they cut, Danny and his crew used the old-fashioned method of perfecting the lines of a boat. Measure, sand and measure. Repeat as needed until absolutely perfect. It was the same way they laid up hulls, with attention to detail that is becoming a lost art form. I grew up in Lauderdale, visiting the factory from time to time, watching the process. Because I was involved in boat design and engineering for the military, I had an appreciation for his work and promised myself I would own a Powerplay someday. Now, I have two.

I knew a bunch of go-fast guys and offshore racers in the South Florida area that owned these boats. They had previously owned Cigarettes, Scarabs and such, but they all swore the Powerplay was the best built boat of all. To this day, when looking at 10-20 year old PP's, it's hard to find a stress crack anywhere. Danny and his crew really knew how to lay-up a boat. I would place the build and lay-up quality on the same level with Peter Hledin's Skaters. I've had both 24' and 28' Skaters, but slowed down about a decade ago and bought the PP25' as a tender to a larger boat.

The 25’ is my all-time favorite. The hull is identical to the George Linder designed 21' Challengers, Shadows, Superboats, etc. These 22 degree deadrise, 4 strake hulls are very rewarding to drive and they can really hone a driver's skill. You can hang them on the edge of flight and they won't bite you (unlike a Steve Stepp designed Velocity). I had 2 Shadows in my late teens & early twenties. I LOVED those boats, but wanted something a little larger, a little smoother and a little drier.

Needs smaller I would think. 300x revs to ~6800 RPM

28's at 6000 with 20% slip would run 80. He must only be turning the engines 5000 RPM to run 65.
