Thumbs up Speeds: 24/7 Hulls with 496 HO

I bet there are quite a few 24/7 hulls, without step bottom, out there with 496 HO's.

Ï'm about to finish my 24 Pantera racing project that will be rigged with 496 HO with CMI Sport tubes and Bravo X drive.

My goal is to reach 75mph but it would be very nice to get some info about your specifics:
Hull:
Year:
Exhaust:
Prop:
X-dim:
Speed:
Etc.

Thomas, several boats ago so I don't remember everything you are asking.
2002 24 Pantera Sport
496 Mag HO CMI Headers
ITS Box with XR Drive- Standard Depth
Ran two different props 24 Bravo, I think and tried a hydromotive
Kind of liked the hydro because it porpoised less.
around 4900 RPMs, not over 5,000
low 70s every day and I think I saw 75 a few times

I made the ITS/ XR and CMI change all at the same time so I don't know which made the most difference. I suspect the XR slowed it down a bit and the CMI helped to offset that and it was an overall wash.

Hope this helps,
Greg

I need to write this stuff down because I forget some of the details!!

Thanks Greg,

Was the drive at about 17" before and with the ITS?

The drive was a did remain at the factory 17" height. I think there may have been some gain to be had by going higher with the propshaft.

Yes, especially with the ITS that puts it even lower because of the angle of the water behind the transom.

Well, I did'nt have a 496, but a 454, and was a little dissapointed with the performance. I brought a 79 Pantera back from the dead a few years ago after a guy I bought it from stripped it out for an outboard conversion! Yuck! Clean hull, dead straight, high and dry. Built a Fresh, carbed, 454 (450 flywheel HP) 10.5 cr, big cam, Victor intake, holley 800dp, #781 heads, mild porting, Stainless marine manifolds, custom dry tailpipes, Bravo in stock location. Best speed with mirage plus 3 blade, 23' 67mph at 5200, mirage 21' 65 mph at 5600, and 65 mph hydromotive 4-blade 22' at 5000. I built it to crack 70 but never did.. All in all I only had about 3k in the engine, but was a little dissapointed on the speeds. I figure the motor made 500hp, but probably upwards of 6000+ though.. The Pantera is now gone and I'm currently finishing a 24 Superboat with a 477 BBC, 500hp at the flywheel for sure this time, so I hope we see the 70's!!

Not a 496 but with a stock 502MAG I ran right at 70mph. A little more on a good day and a little less on a bad day. My X is 17 or 17.5(I can't remember for sure).

Fastest prop was a standard Mirage but is slipped like crazy at cruise and offered a very "loose" feel at WFO. Mirage + slipped less but was slower.

Rev4 was by far the best 4 blade. A little slower than the 3 blades(about the same as a Mirage + though)but handled much better and is a great rough water prop.

My boat hates a stock Bravo prop. I tried a labbed Bravo that had some bow lift built into it and it was better but not as good as the Rev4.

I did try a Hydro QIV and it was okay but took a ton of trim to loosen up. I think with a higher X the QIV would work better.

I now run a Turbo Lightning or Rev4. IMO my boat would respond well to a shorty. These boats have good natural bow lift and using less trim would help the boat ride flatter and get better forward thrust. Just my $.02.

Tomas how about some new pics?
