https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bd304d2dd0.jpg Got 2 layers of 1700 down around the perimeter of the port floor. just slowed down and put 3 tblspn of cabosil per 16 oz of resin just enough so it wets out fast but is more stickier, just like i was told to do. Another tblspn or 2 per 16 oz maybe would've been better but its all good. Not a problem but aggravating, to finish the floor im going to tear up and use mat since all the 1700 is needed on other stuff and i cut the material for the starboard side to make the tabbing used today. so both sides will be tabbed all around with 1700, and mat in the field, not what was planned but gotta own the mistake i made. |

Still cant wrap edges consistantly so leaving it hang saves on the grinding |
Swim platform and rear seat edges done, everythings nice and flat. 1st coat of gel on front seat mold.
Not a real mold, its one of my easybake oven jobs. gel is waxed, have gray tint for next coat, hopefully that will help for finish sanding and layup. mixed a qaurt pouerd in on and bulked up edges, looks like its drying. another couple projects and the shop floor will be all glassed and gelled over https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...475bd12b5c.jpg |

Making those 3 layer 1708 spacers and gluing down the stops on the hull to set the stringers really paid off, from engine mount to hatch to boat centerline everything fell inside an 1/8 inch. Have enough resin to bond dogbox inside to hatch bottom. last 5 of resin will wait until seat plug is reasy to go, but taking next week off to spend quality time on other boat edit in; glassed the port side of the dogbox laying down under the boat trailer, you guys with the big shops just dont know the fun your missing out on. |

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ffe8ff86af.jpg
Seat plug is ready for wax, very little gray gel ghosted thru so theres enough gel left on it that someone who knows what they're doing could really make it nice. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...89e1158e46.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2da3535035.jpg Boarded it down with 600 - 800 & 1000 all at once, saved alot of time |
No takers on the above post huh ?
another day of 36 & 80 on both the 7 & 4 inch grinder and it'll be ready for tuffcoat and gel. but i need some time away from it. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d99fa51aaf.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...56eafe4999.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...97d0f8a020.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b5d69fc88a.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...4a3e10bec0.jpg |

The idea would be usable w/o upholstery and less wear on upholstery. gel on rear seat wraps around the edges about an 1/8th, bare spots on it and swim platform get non skid, still undecided brand and color |
Lookin' real good ! As far as your balsa cored pieces are concerned , does the finish weight surprise you ?
I still can't get over the weight of a hatch I had made some years back with balsa core. The damn thing must have sucked up 100 gallons of resin , but it is near indestructible though. To be honest IMO any resin saturated wood cores when glassed well are pretty heavy . |
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f9b2153d2b.jpg
it weighs 11 pounds. approx template size is 18 x 53 1/2, the seat after trimming is 17 1/2 x 52 4 layers 1708, 1 layer 1-1/2 mat, 1/4 core. 138 ounces of resin poured, 116-120 ounces made it into the layup, that includes what got trimmed off. if there is a formula that tells me the exact volumes and end weight i prolly wouldn't understand it, because, well my cyphering says to not ruin your shoes just don't wear none dummy !! https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1491131dfa.jpg |
found out if you put 32 ounces of gel in a cup it squirts out when the lid goes on, so figured out approx 30 1/2 ounces plus tint and activator doesn't leak and spill all over, marked all my cups, poured the gel, measured the tint in a srynge and had no issues.
if i put money down i woulda lost, never thought this was gonna go off as nice as it did. wore a tyvek suit and mask so no gel all over me and my bare feet. better pics in a day or so https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...43224a1ee1.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...befe416357.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bbe357ed14.jpg |

(touch up as needed and shoot on another final qaurt) the bigger chunks as pictured will get swiped with 3m premium marine filler first, but my finish body sanding skills are lacking. The low spots that boarding reveals are so thin i think using gel is the way to go. gel on the sides between the tape, tuffcoat non skid the rest. |

Just gonna thicken up about 8 ounces of gel to use as filler. |
Looking fantastic! Thank you for posting your progress.
For fairing compound I have used vinyl-ester resin mixed with microballons, it makes a very light sandable mix that does not clog up paper |
Thanks, yeah i like that sandable stuff. Reason i went gel was to expose all the imperfections, using thickened gel as filler should pay off in the end because the box is 16-18 sq ft approx so 1 qaurt covered it. After the touch up i'll spray on another qaurt, since its all round, curved and so on if i sand thru while boarding it wont expose filler and need to be re shot.
got the gas tank in today, temperature dictates what happens day by day now and curse the bad luck, dog box wont fit in the house or i could be sanding and filling right now |

The finished product will be 2 things for sure, 1. good enough for who its for 2. good enough for the girls i bring around. my new slogan is as follows; I only use the best materials to make up for the obvious lack of skills |
Your glass and wood-work it top-notch! (as is your perseverance!) It will be an awesome boat!
|
Thanks cdshack, i appreciate the nice words.
honestly tho cutting and fitting the wood and making the parts isn't that hard. But fit and finish after glass is tough, dimensions change differently than expected and planned for. The job really doesn't look that good in person, that's why the floor hatches got glassed in. It would fit and finish better in the end if it was covered with indoor/outdoor to hide the "goof ups and the blend it in a bits" structurally i'm 100 percent confident in it, cosmetically i'm more of a rough it in and keep it outta direct sunlight type. if there's gonna be another project it'll have to be a full deck-cockpit liner , there's too much bodywork trying to make stick built look good and that job is better off being left to the pros. thanks again keeps me motivated. |

So, ground the edge off the first pair of seats, rounded them over and ordered more gel. without the edge the seats look 100x's better and will be easier to cover. This revelation comes from something glassdave told me that i didn't understand and didn't ask why, my personal rule of spare dave of your dumb questions. Ordering more gel makes sense since there is another mold fashioned up from what we'll call experimental material, plenty of resin, balsa and glass leftover but not enough gel to do both jobs, plus touch up on the hull, well apparently there is a new white i was not made aware of. seats prepped and masked, mold waxed, gel poured, here we go ! The new white is about a mile down the color chart from the first 4 gallons of white wedding i sprayed all over everything else on this boat, talk about the island of misfit toys, funny thing is the patches here and there around the bottom and hullsides won't stand out as much like the old white would have. |
Are you planning on still using this to ski with? I ask because as you know they normally have the front passenger seat facing backwards and it looks like you are going to point it forward.
