I knew there was 3 spots that had been repaired, and when the hull was gutted there was nothing to indicate on the inside the damage came thru or leaked. With a spotlight on the outside you could see it was gouges. the repairs looked like some 14 year old kid was trying to cover up what he did before his parents came home. patince paid off, paint strpper and razor blades got the hullsides from the blue stripe and down back to gelcoat. it also removed the red bondo on the right side and the brown bondo on the left side, so a little grinding in just those areas and some tore up mat it'll be back in business. the repairs and paint were done over brown scummy water stains. except for what looks like using the boat to ram the trailer, 42 years of neglect, abuse and the work/maintenance completed by Big Jimbo down at uncle jim bob's airboat tours gator rasellin and marine repairs the hull is cleaning up nice. i'd rather it wore 42 year old gelcoat than that paint job. i have also come to conclusion that either colonel steve austin with his bionic strenght and speed or samarui night fever taped off the lettering down the hullsides because the razor marks in the gelcoat are almost as bad as the gouges from whatever they hit. swear to god if the lettering was removed the thing would look like it lost a knife fight. |
I wonder if the thought was lay down the silicone to cushion future impacts? Glass Dave should look into this.......
Thanks for all the pictures and the build thread you have some serious determination and patience! |
Man I wish I had your patients and fiberglass skills. Have a buddies old Barracuda that I would love to redo as a tribute one day. We brought it back to life once and taught all our kids to ski with it. Then medical issues left it parked in field for 20yrs now.
Nice Work !! |

Nice Work !! I am looking for an excuse to drive back (rather than fly) to cleveland this summer, so ; what color barricuda ? running gear wise, how intact is it ? could care less about interior/ stringers gauges and so on how bad is the trailer ? how close to free is your buddy willing to let it go for ? I won't charge him to get it out ! Or do you or anyone know where a 16-18 donzi is v drive preferred, not the 50,000 dollar one in n.h. that has grass trees and a pond in it. ***** edit in; not n.h. it was glenn galls ny and the price was 90,000.00 i kid you not, ***** *****page 157 craigslist gold, and i`m still in for 500 bucks if anyone knows the guy ***** Doesn't have to be vdrive, doesn't need engine or drive, its really the year color and deck that makes or breaks it for me. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a0dd419daa.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d6e40f5268.jpg how do you not want a barricuda and a mustang in your driveway? |

The pieces get progressively smaller after the first 3 layers to build back up the deep part of the repair . Both sides look to be built up enough to grind the countour back in. going out on a limb and guessing even chopped strand mat bubble rolled out real good might, maybe, possibly have 1/2 the structural integrity as swiped silicone covered with bondo, but that silicone really grabbed on and remained flexible. |

Yep that's her, but in Blue with White deck. Heck I'll grab ya a pic when drive by next time. We broke the rudder off, fab'd something up outa stainless, but still needed some work when she was parked. Been so long don't rem what it was.. Only that she's 318 Chrysler powered. My buddy Greg passed away two years back and thee boat is at a friends house who was gonna try and get it going again for him. I ask that dude about it few months ago, and he said all mine if I want to tackle it. We both kinda just want to see it brought back to life again, Such a beautiful old design, and Greg would be happy just knowing someone took time to restore it rather than scrap it. |
Grab several pics, lets see how intact she is. The running gear (shaft strut rudder) is all available new.
Had i researched, would have held off for a barricuda, mustang, wildcat, they're out there, but i didn't know they existed. I wouldn't hesitate to do another, this nautique i'd sell for what i got in it once it's completed and in the water so i could roll right into another project. All the glass work is done, just down to the touch up gel and rigging, might be back on the trailer this weekend. |

All hardware is cleaned and ready to re install. i have to partially retract and amend an earlier post where i stated the boat was never washed, ever ! It was washed to the bunks, everything below/ inside the bunks were never washed, ever ! mary kate on & off didn't touch, zero results on the brown water stains, the only water stains that were removed was from the paint remover around all the mounting pads for the underwater hardware. i put 1000 grit on the grinder held it flat on the hull bottom and went to town, the brown water stains came off the hi side of the print thru. That is not blistering, that's woven roving. the hull bottom looks like a checker board or frosted miny wheats. |
Hi
What an impressive work ... And what courage when we see the first photos. It's a real reconstruction of high quality Congratulations |

Kid, that sounds good, you've got bigger fish going and this ski has to get finished and sent down the road.
Be real nice if this barricuda is a model year with fiberglass seat shells and fiberglass floor pan, still trying to nail the year that was started. |

Nice to have help who knows the score. did final thickened gel swipe today. Duratech arrived 2 days ago, we'll see how big of a mess i can make with that. 2 part epoxy primer for non skid is here and another gallon of non skid should be here any day. amazing how 11 pieces of hardware gets the blood pumping. |

Yep, yesterday I drove over out to the strawberry fields and back, my white tuck looks just like your gelcoat, just a little more smeared.. Haven't seen love bugs around here like this in years.
|
There not that thick down here yet.
i didn't see any until the gel was shot, soon as the wax came up and the gel skinned over the only ones around were stuck to it. |

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b502c09f92.jpg so that's 16 oz gel no wax 1 layer, then 2 layers 8 oz gel w/ 8 oz duratech. #4 tip on cup gun for gel, 2.5 tip hvlp gun for the 50/50 mix. i like the duratech. First time using it. There is some sanding but it looks like i can start with 800 wet we'll see i guess. |

I like it and it's soft under foot, the sand sized rubber is white. Would lay better if sprayed with hopper gun or undercoating gun, but that would take some serious masking. I used their roller and dabbed with a chip brush, stomping with a chip brush in the inside corner blended nice.
that said, now i realize it would be nicer if the rear portion of the gunnel was gel (inbetween the blue tape) also, the carribean blue would've really popped. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5702023474.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7334c20fd8.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9b5419967b.jpg |

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b7e9f370e4.jpg
I can report that tuff coat is some pretty good stuff. 1. I was inside the boat yesterday doing some assembly and it feels buttery smooth. 2. My shorts were not properly prepped or primed to promote adhesion, non the less it remains flexible, soft to the touch and won't scrape off even after a handful of wash cycles. if you notice the rubber granuals are white so when it wears over time the floor won't darken. |

Dowels, fresh 4200 orings on the brackets, it set down almost as nice as cylinder heads on locating pins the first time with no smearing. |
Thank you in advance for chiming in and helping, I have a thread in electrical but figure more views over here.
There is a rats nest of wiring, i need help with ignition start -run & charge correctly. i literally need it from battery to a, from a to b, from b to c etc etc the ignition was converted from points to electric. some pictures where im holding wires correspond to the drawing where i wrote "off to ?" Luckily the new bezel will cover the majority of the mess i made of it. Huge fun with these braided wire grinder attachments crawling all over and under the trailer for a day prepping it for ospho and 1 qrt of paint that weighs 6 pounds it has so much zinc in it. |
Looking good.
I'll bring my slalom back to FL with me next month. |

I'll bring my slalom back to FL with me next month. i'm doing everything i can (short of cutting corners) to get it done while the boat market is up. working on it today, this is my lunch hour now. i'll sing from the halls of montezuma and anchors aweigh a couple times while cooking my burgers later for working on Memorial Day. Now the pylon foot can get glassed before the engine goes in and it can be removed without worrying about the engine. the blue tape marks max length of engine mount angles so pylon mount can slide back and come out. |

Rear mount rubbers had some issues https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...537cece263.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9ab6338051.jpg I cut the rubbers down and pressed them back in so they still locate center (plumb) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...840aaf2806.jpg A spacer got correct elevation, a shim got the spacer level & sqaure to bolt plumb. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2747f4ec21.jpg The adjustable bolt is located all around and rotates smoothly https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7ed96d35e5.jpg The weight is on the original top washer and the bottom holds it from lifting out https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c41840e511.jpg The trunion is threaded, rotate the bolt to adjust, big locking nut isn't on yet, everything is just assembled temp to verify the fix would work. few pages back i was bustin chops on big jimbo down at uncle jim bobs gator wrastlin airboat rides and marine repair for the hackery. well as it turns out there was a little bit of big jimbo happening over here with the rear mounts. still waiting to hear if the rubbers are nla or not and new mounts cost alot, then at that point have to get new fronts then have to get new angle, so rather than b-o-a-t, i big jimbo'd it. |
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2dbbbcf8ba.jpg
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...465c3e3679.jpg everything is painted (except the engine, lazy) for fun i polished up the corrosion on the angle. gonna put the mounts on the engine and then put the angles on and set width to about 1/4 less than the stringers, the engine has to go in get slid front/back for correct prop/strut spacing then stringers marked for drilling, engine has to come back out overnight so the fresh holes can get resin swabbed, or epoxy swabbed since there is a nationwide shortage of ve resin with a 2 month wait time. i'm lazy but not 2 months lazy. put some 8-32's along the bottom of starboard angle to mount cushion clamps for rigging |
I like what you did with the ski pylon , I have no doubt that I would have done the same .
Let the pylon do its thing and let the engine mount do its own thing . I bet you can't wait to get on the water and bury the throttle . Now here's a thought .. when those skiers at the end of the rope get yucked out of the water do they consider the boat pulling them or do they say because of the the location of the pylon that they're being pushed out of the water ? ? :drink: I think I need one of these now . |

They are stupid expensive 2. They (every model year) have an outdated no longer available digital/computer dash that cost a few grand to be fixed if it can be, but no worries, because used ones are 3-4 grand if you can find it with the added exitement of not knowing if or how long it will last. 2021 models start at 119 thousand dollars, therefore, anything 2013 and on cost really stupid money and would be well on it's way into the above list but for way more money because they're newer and have more digital computer stuff than the frickin spaceshuttle. almost forgot, canvas, stereo, amps, speakers and so on will be all wiped out. so if you want one, buy mine, it needs nothing, the trailer needs nothing, it'll be priced very reasonably with the added bonus of right now you can pick the upholstery since that is the very last thing to get done. the title is clean, the trailer is registered, it's old so no one wants to steal it for the tower speakers and led lighted cupholders, and unless your ranked in the top couple percent waterskiers in the world, you'd never know the difference between a 1979 and 2021 wake, but your wallet wife and insurance agent will for sure know the difference. |

Non issue. the new dampener only lines up with 3 bolt holes and it wouldn't make a difference between old and new flywheel. the new flywheel is metric and although it fits on the crank hubcentric it doesn't rattle around, but it's not snug on the hubcentric. the holes for bolt to crank are bigger and the dampener holes are threaded 1.25 Is this an issue ? monday i'll go back to the shop and get the old flywheel back (if it hasn't gone to scrap) just in case, and i'll get some bolts for the dampener if the new flywheel is ok to work. more engine BS its always the engine, serial numbers and custom made direct fit parts from the highest praised, highest sought after, highest polished highest priced manufacturer in the world never works without more/other parts and/or some kind of mods. on another note, WE WON WW2 ! Can anyone stand up and tell the class how metric is even a thing other than a long forgotten footnote in history ? |
Well i just found out it's the wrong flywheel. Got all the part #'s and a detailed explanation from the guys on the ski boat website.
big thanks went out, now it's a wait till monday game to see if the old flywheel is still around, if theres a restocking fee or if it can even be returned since it was opened and checked out for fitment. |

The alternator was in and out 20 times. at this rate expect sea trials to commence, early may ? |
