it needed some filling/bodywork, and out of desperation i put 7 drops of white pigment in 4 oz of 635 thin epoxy and 2 scoops of cabosil.
it was like mayo and filled it perfectly but didn't cover because it's swiped on thin.
should have saved the 15 bucks used the gray color i have or spent the 15 on black, it might have covered better and looked better.

resurrected 09-29-2021 11:02 AM

Looking like progress! Great work as always
I wouldn't be worried about the lack of coverage, if anybody see's it, you have bigger issues!

outonsafari 09-29-2021 06:34 PM

Should i start over, sand it down deep enough to be filled and sanded at least twice for coverage and smooth finish ?

Problem is It's a 4 oz mix with 3 oz waste with this epoxy at 3 to 1.
Unless theres a trick to mixing less, weighing it 3 to 1 ?

resurrected 09-30-2021 06:22 AM

I am not a resin expert but I would not start over just to get a better cosmetic finish in that location (even though everything you have done so far is flawless). I would just make sure its smooth enough that it will be easy to clean. It's all epoxy so the water will not break anything down, and its on the underside so it will never see UV rays.
As far as mixing a small batch of resin, you just need an accurate scale to reduce the quantities of the ratio down to what you need. I have two scales for measuring resin one is accurate to 0.01g with a max load of 500g for small batches and one accurate to 1g for max weight of 15kg for big tubs.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...789c81548a.jpg

well i cut it down and filled it, but it's no better. It was smooth yesterday and is smooth today.
i think that's part of the problem, i know it's supposed to be a bigger area and i'm supposed to fill and sand a hundred times till it's all feathered.
I suck at bodywork, i can shape and rough in to 80 grit, the high grits and all that magic touch is way above and far beyond my capabilities.
Tomorrow i'll wash off the blush and start around the edges with 800 and it'll be what it'll be.

i appreciate that, but the rest of the work isn't flawless in any universe, in some pictures or if ya stand back after it's hosed down it "looks"good,
but i know what good work looks like, this isn't that !

still waiting on floats from holley, want it done and in the water for the packing gland adjustments before i screw the carburetor all up 4 or 5 times.

Pete_5 09-30-2021 09:10 PM

With regard to your post #164, unless I misread your issue, for a small mix of epoxy I’ve always done it by volume and used a syringe for measurement, and the volume required can be calculated from the products specific gravity

outonsafari 10-07-2021 05:47 PM

I googled it ; ""Is specific gravity the same as regular gravity"
Density and Specific Gravity are never the same, because Density has units and Specific Gravity is dimensionless, but they are numerically equal when three conditions are met: (1) Density is measured in grams per cubic centimeter, grams per milliliter, or kilograms per liter; (2) Density and Specific Gravity are .

i appreciate that, i thought it could just be weighed, can't call and ask the supplier what the specific gravity is because they already know how i struggle with just the regular gravity, and everyone on this site already knows im not smart.

resurrected 10-08-2021 06:25 AM

The technical data should be easily available for the resin you use. I have always been able to get a weight based ratio for epoxy and vinyl ester. I have used syringes for volume measurement before I bought the small scale, and they work well. It is a good option.
The supplier should be able to give you weight based ratios, that's what good customer service is about!
Nobody on this forum is "smart", if we were we wouldn't play with boats!

outonsafari 10-08-2021 08:45 AM

Or play with carbs and read books !
with the bowls removed and held upright air can be blown into the supply, when rotated upside down the air is cut off.
the power valve is cracked, i have the correct replacement
everything is here except the floats. Should i throw in the power valve and try it or go all in.
Stupid carburetor, how many times ya think it'll be off and apart again.

i went to the speed shop in cocoa, he's been there 47 years, guys a carb genious, he didn't have floats in stock and has a 2-3 week backlog for a rebuild.

I have never seen a power valve fail like that, I would assume it was over torqued. Sounds like the float valve is working, as long as the floats are not cracked or saturated, while you have it apart blow out the small orifices and passages gently. Put it back together and drive on. looks like fun to me!

outonsafari 10-13-2021 06:31 PM

Over the last 2 days i got the speakers installed and wired up, the fronts are in boxes i made from the plastic containers that 4 inch velcro grinding pads come in. Couldn't bring myself to cut holes in the gunnels.

got the rudder installed and cable loaded, rudder and wheel are straight (at least on the trailer) and theres equal left right rotations within the width of a steering wheel spoke. Also installed a new bilge pump and bigger hose.

last but not least i went thru 3 cans of break kleen on the carb, every hole both directions, all clean and nice flow.

today;

Right out of the box the distributor cap "for prestolite screw down distributors" didn't fit but it does now.

New cap rotor and wires, got the carb on and at first when it started to get fuel it fired up and sounded great ! For 2 fkn seconds then it went right back to extremely rich, and by extremely i mean stupid kid in a diesel truck with a 44 inch lift kit shopping cart tires led lights 8 foot ladder looking things on the axels and making more black smoke than the entire 7th fleet at flank speed back in ww2.

started with the idle mixture screws at 1 1/2 open, no matter what direction or how much turned had absolutely no affect on the rich condition or engine speed. Each setting was left to run for 20 seconds.

i have an idea to try but since i'm not sure how they work it's most likely a bad one.

don't be giving me any lip about the combat made speaker boxes, they parted off the containers, they work and it was that or cut holes in the gunnels. Besides, no one wants to go under that dash and if someone did they wouldn't notice how all the speakers wires were untwisted, run and fastened blue to blue from start to finish for what reason i have no idea.
the 5 1/2 qaurt mixing container fits the 6.5 speakers perfectly, it came out real nice and tossed aside for another project.

outonsafari 10-14-2021 03:58 PM

Spoiler

or in my case luck that it launched and recovered better and easier than expected. I got 3 feet 6 inches worth of tongue extension ball to ball and the up pulling winch worked perfectly on the launch and load. The guide on goal post things i made also worked perfectly.

and so in order to keep pissing people off " my stuff worked pefectly and everyone elses stuff did not, well that's not fair, 1/2 of that stuff didn't fit or was flat out the wrong part, everything we've come to expect"

the steering is 1 finger and the rudder port does not drip.

the shaft packing gland leaks, no gushes, no niagra falls when adjusted per the instructions. It's hand adjusting and therefore convienant however it would not stop leaking until i used a wrench and then it would still drip drip drip too fast, t's not right probably just a defective part but it's brand new and it's a ***** to remove.

i have some videos to upload and get posted.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...01c71be030.jpg

It's in a little too far but i wasn't sure how deep to be so the tracking fins didn't hit the trailer. I'll have to relaunch and load again to get some measurements to make the bow stop and i know the bow stop will make a big difference as to how deep the trailer has to be because the boat floated /slid forward a bit once the stern started to float.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...edc9920820.jpg

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...87c32c081b.jpg

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...94de13ae84.jpg

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...34db9d5bcc.jpg

I always float on and off with the other boat and use the bow eye to help pull it.
I pulled throwing the rope around the winch tower directly out of my ass.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f3121feb11.jpg

Literally walked back pushed the boat off the dock and pulled the rope, it went on like it was being driven. The trailer wasn't as deep ( the lights were out of the water) and i think it could still be a few inches higher.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6fb73553fe.jpg

Moved the boat forward that much and now i like the tongue weight

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...deab35a1bf.jpg

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a867b335c6.jpg

The goal posts worked perfectly and it landed pretty evenly, i mean who doesn't like the boat to be perfectly on the trailer right ?

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...19a6f81d70.jpg

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e86e3564ac.jpg

The up pulling winch is awesome. So it's down to measuring for a bow stop with a tie back/safety strap and some expanded steel to turn the tongue into a catwalk because it's a wobbly and scary walk from the tailgate to the winch and that 3 feet feels like a mile over aligator and shark infested waters let me tell ya.

i bought a windshield for the ski boat, the guy drives from georgia down to daytona to see his brother and he brought it with him.

1 of the handles on the drivers vent window is busted, any ideas for replacement and/or modification, i'm wide open.

calling taylor in the past yields the same answer, it's too old !

when i got back this morning i almost broke down an ordered a new carb, then i wasted a couple hours getting all set up hooked up and installed new needle and seat in both bowls, ZERO change, this time i took the carb off immediately and seen all the fuel in the manifold.

heck with it, just ordered frankenstein a new carb.

the guy i bought the windshield from has 6 running ski boats newer and older, plus a barn full of parts and stuff.

he has a pair 1 left, 1 right 383 chrysler with bw trans and v- drives, he says both run and have good compression.

I don't think the chryslers have any use over here in terms of authenticity in and or for some old raceboat but i asked about the price and splitting them up

To quote him "to the guy who needs them they're worth alot, but i'll sell them for 1 thousand a piece and flexible on that, but they have to come pick them up"

located in georgia, just throwing it out there.

Pete_5 10-19-2021 05:45 AM

I can sympathise with your alligator and shark issues we have crocodiles, sharks, stonefish and stingers, so the less my feet are in the water the better, your idea of the gang-plank/catwalk on the trailer tongue is a good one.

I’ve enjoyed reading your posts, you do great work thanks for sharing.

Pete_5 10-19-2021 05:48 AM

Your drivers vent window handle looks like a bit of fabrication needed with a piece of solid aluminum rod, a file and a drill press.

sea dog via amazon for the latches.

As to the tongue/catwalk, it was a great idea until i priced expanded steel. It may still happen.

the new stuffing box when you looked into/thru it, the rope was a bigger i.d. than the delrin compression washers.

as a result it wouldn't drip correctly as seen in the float test videos. The place i got it from sent a new one out and you can see the rope now.

just be sure i had everything on my end ok i double checked the stern tube, it was the correct diameter and it was centered good but it wasn't perfectly parallel so i shortened, wrapped and sanded it. Luckily i still have access to the easy bake oven secret tool box and got it all straightened out.

If i had to do it over i'd make the stern tube without the bell end on the pvc pipe.

the new carburetor arrived yesterday, if it runs then the timing and adjusting will be done dockside, i hope.

going to pick up a vacuum gauge for the carb tuning this afternoon.

outonsafari 10-21-2021 05:58 PM

I'd really enjoy seeing your boat in person heath but you wouldn't want me to work on it, i follow torque sequence over multiple passes on everything and overthink the simplest stuff and who knows if it's right.

Vacuum from here on the spacer but it needed 3 hoses jammed together and i'm not sure if it's ok to use that.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6bc646bbbc.jpg

thanks pete, the bow stop worked out real good on and off the trailer.

It was a long long day with only idle and timing set, putting it in the water was a bad idea, couldn't get situated so i had to pack it in take it home and start over.

At least i found out the new packing gland doesn't drip at all, the nut is loose and not touching the compression washer so water should be coming in.

the only way to hook up the timing light is jumper cables. The longer it ran the more it cleared up.

the vacuum gauge said late ignition timing and sure enough after setting the jumper cables back up and peeking under the alternator it was at 8.

idle is now 650 and timing is now 11. It sounds pretty good now and ran under a thousand all day until i turned the camera on and gave it a couple shots up to 2200.

the directions for the vacuum gauge now says it needs a carb adjustment, seems like putting it back in the water tomorrow and taking it out will cure the packing gland issue and just running it might do the engine some good, or not i don't know if the out of adjustment carb will damage the engine.

the idle mixture screws were marked, port is 1/2 open, strbrd is 3/8 open, should i start at 1 1/2, is ok to hook the vacuum up on the big hose off the spacer ?

outonsafari 10-31-2021 03:17 PM

Sea trial, it started and idled down nice, nothing seemed out of place and as far as i can see the packing gland nut is so loose the drip is coming out between the threads instead of out of the front of the nut.

admittedly i was skeptical but like captain ron said, "if anythings gonna happen, it'll happen out there"

it didn't sink, didn't leak, didn't blow off any hoses and after an idle stop screw and shift link adjustment

it idles in gear nice, definitely catching f-n-r correctly, making temp oil pressure and charging.

after a half hour of back and forth (in the channel, next to the spoil islands right off christiansons landing grant fl.) at and under 3000 rpm, couldn't resist the temptation and cracked it open.

i was dumbfounded how fast it went, with that 4blade o.j. figured 40 and i'd be happy.

so had to check the gps and fire up the other camera for an up/down wind short run.

this week is fluid changes alignment re check, once over the whole thing and more test runs.

the things a pleasure to tow launch load and run. No issues docking and it was windy and choppy.

Video sound is crappy, no idea what for, towards the end there is an acceleration test
Got some motivation, good advice and tech help from a few members over here otherwise i probably couldn't have got it together and i appreciate that.

It's solid man no rattles and it's pretty smooth too, everyone should have one of these to fun around in.
