I just got the hardener for the core bond today. On the previous bulkheads and stringers we cut the wood close and filled the voids with resin. The core bond is not runny like vinyl ester resin and is a lot easier to manage. It will be better to use for certain things, like bonding floors down to stringers for example.

Of course we’ll be going over the floor bracing and the bulkhead joint with fiberglass and resin like we’ve been doing.

Heath, when I did my boat I bedded in with Cabosil-thickened epoxy. What properties make Core Bond good as a bedding compound? Interested in your experience.

Epoxy is better I'm sure but since this is a polyester boat, I'm just using this stuff. Basically I'm using it in places where there were small voids or where bonding needs to take place (stringer to floor etc.) Taking this boat apart, there were large voids where the bulkheads meet the hull etc. As far as what you see here, I'll be sanding the excess on the outside before I lay the matting on there. This vinyl ester resin is more runny than the polyester I did the 30 foot boat with, and it's more challenging to get the stuff to stay where you put it. It soaks into the matting big time whereas the polyester I used on the 30' stayed wet and was thicker. It was easier to fill voids with it and it not all run to the bottom.

Jeff in those previous photos the bulkhead and the floor frame were just sitting in place, not bonded, They're bonded now...

Heath this is amazing what you are doing! all the pictures are great. I just acquired the identical boat, its a 1981 Kaama edition. Same interior! I got it in Arkansas and brought it to Colorado. It is actually in very good condition, all new rigging.
Keep up the good work!!! |
