No sh!t, that was you?? I saw you and Ray going over the boat on Sunday. My garage was the one right behind you, we were in there screwing around with my golf cart project. Gonna miss that thing sitting back there.

JetJock 01-29-2008 10:34 PM

Yup that was me!

I think I saw you guys through your garage window?

That poor boat needs some water time, I am sure to give it a new home!

Iīd love to get hold of the genuine gauges too although they should be ordinary Merc gauges from one of the series they made.
The camera boat is in good use in one of the episodes where they are on a stakout in a boatshed.

Yes I would also like to see more of these plaques up close.
Apparently the TV-company added these plaques to boost the prices in the auction.

I was told that my boat was one of the boats they used for promotion (Boat shows ect....) but not in the show
not sure if that was true

The gauges were Medallion Industries

I replaced all of mine with new ones from the manufacturer back in the early nineties
company is now called Kysor Medallion
Still the coolest boat i ever owned

Miami vice Scarab

Good deal Randy,

We sea striled the boat last fall and all went well save a guage or two inop. no important ones tough. Boat runs about 70 GPS mph. Faster than when new.

Talk to you later

Jim

When you come back for the sea trial I'll bring the beer :D

Ray and his dad have always taken really good care of that boat, but it has done a lot of sitting for the past couple of years. I have always figured at some point the time and price would work out and I'd pick it up. Guess not now. If you were down by our community marina my Formula and Old School's Cig are parked right next to each other.

Believe or not sometimes these boats do hold true to their stories..I doubted the DJ boat over here for many years on certain points but it checked all true.
And Yes DJ used the show boats as he wished, The one in Norway and the One in Finland both are used/given to him that we can agree on but Smackyīs boat is the "Starboat".

DirtyMoney 06-21-2008 03:53 PM

There was a Don Johnson edition KV at the Atlanta boat show many years ago with Lambo V12's anyone know anything about these?

MikeyFIN 06-21-2008 04:36 PM

A prop boat for Wellcraft but not a 38KV but a 43 DJ signature series, now a side by side would be a tight fit even lengthwise in a 38KV.
I was justabout to ask if anyone knows if Wellcraft made staggered KVīs?

DirtyMoney 06-21-2008 05:58 PM

It seems like the boat had surface drives.

MikeyFIN 06-21-2008 06:23 PM

Yes..Lambos and Arneson. a 43 DJ signature series with all the bells and whistles.

DirtyMoney 06-22-2008 01:19 AM

Any pics?

MikeyFIN 06-22-2008 05:31 AM

The same boat as in the ad ?
A reg 43 Excel with the rather Geekish DJ graphics and the optional interior with the round curves plus Lambos and Arnesons...instead of triple BBCīs..also being slower with Lambos 75vs. 78 mph.

MickyFin,

As for the staggered engine KV question. The answer is yes they did. A friend just sold a Larry Smith KV with staggered big blocks on this site. The Betty Smith Kamma was staggered. They can be identified by the LONG scoops on the engine hatches.

Cheers !

Jim

MikeyFIN 07-13-2008 05:36 PM

Yes I know Larry Smith (TEAM) Scarabs were all Staggered and raceboats..but Wellcraft ?
Did they (Wellcraft) make any Kaamas or 38KVs staggered...377 raised decks you could have.

Was your friends boat the ex- Michelob Light or some else racer ?
A bare hull of those would suit fine too....

Where do you find one of these posters?

nova26 07-13-2008 11:04 PM

How many of the Miami Vice boats did Wellcraft make?

MikeyFIN 07-14-2008 04:04 AM

Iīve heard a number of 100 planned but 50 + TV-Series boats actually built (54-56)..so in boating circles quite a lot for a special edition boat...even a lot in auto circles.

Might also be one of the boats that was "Don Johnsons"... he used to have a clause in many of his projects that he got the clothes and prop things like vehicles to his personal use/ to himself.
When did you own yours and what was the HIN ?
Please contact Jetjock by email or something.

gotta Quote myself here...

Interesting info here.... Now Big Booty Trudy got a 38KV too???
And Olmos !!!

check this at 2:00....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-TyZ...eature=related

Guess the Wellcrafts statement at the auction after the show and Rick Jr the Cameramans verifications of 6 KVīs do hold a candle.

And yes Iīthink Trudys KV would be far more interesting than DJīs :)

JetJock 03-28-2009 07:59 AM

That interview is on the Miami Vice Season one Discs, nobody seems to know how long she had owned the boat. My guess is they were Demo boats and not registered to some of the actors directly.

MikeyFIN 03-28-2009 10:51 AM

Wellcraft stated they sold the boats to the Series production company ( Michael Mann productions?) and I think that company just let the actors use them and then auctioned them off.

But DJ had one for personal use which is signed by wellcraft staff with greetings to him under the laminate in the cabin. Those are the ones Iīve seen in person, aka the 4th season boat that apparently was a 87 model overpainted to look like a 88 model. ( silver arch and black gunnels etc..) Also this is the cover boat with the girl lying on the deck I reckon.
The one in Germany is a big ? as itīs a 89 and the series ended that year and the boats were auctioned. If itīs the real thing thereīs only one still shot of it in Freefall.
Guess weīll never get this straight except at the auction there was 6 boats for sale.

sofar we have 2 Camera boats, the one Smacky has and the one in Norway and this one over here also referred to as the Stunt boat as there was a rumor itīs reinforced as it weights a lot more than a regular 38KV with same power.

funny I havenīt noticed that interview on the discs despite having them all :)

JetJock 03-29-2009 08:00 AM

Mikey-

Go look at the first disc. Plenty of interviews to make ya happy.

Do you have anymore MV Boating history? I am enjoying the read.

Take care,

Randy

MikeyFIN 03-29-2009 09:39 AM

Thatīs about all I can tell except later of the boat thatīs over here and itīs real life which is also almost movie material... In a nuthsell Imported as a pr and "raceboat", been stolen at least once, rented to a ski jumper ( Matti Nykänen) who used it on a lake, has run away from the coast guard and cops at least once, blown the original engines at least once, almost been shot at, Stripped, painted wrong, confiscated by IRS and finally being equipped with diesels and sat now for a long time on land.
So a hard life it has had...

Maybe time for it finally to get a good home...

JetJock 03-29-2009 09:41 AM

Post some pics....

MikeyFIN 03-29-2009 12:40 PM

Think I have or 38KV has linked it before... but here we go again.
http://www.northoffshore.com/miami%20vice%201987.htm
As you can see the arch is white ( was all silver) the Gunnels and Dash is turquise ( both were black aka 88 up paint scheme) the stripe on the hull lacks the purple fading and the outlining is in silver and the Deck stripe is all wrong.
And the bottom is oversprayed as it should be white and is beneath the dark blue is cracking at places.
So this boat needs a (soda)blasting and a total paintjob to be like it was.
Also the interior was missing parts after it was stripped, all the
Plexiglass "windows" in the cabin with the Scarab logos was missing and all the gauges,K-controls etc in the dash as you can see.
Havenīt cought up with the current owner if he ever found the pieces back.

JetJock 03-29-2009 12:44 PM

Mikey

Just to correct an earlier post..you said that on Miami Vice there was NEVER a boat without the Race Hatches--actually there was two episodes I can think of with the sunpad and no race hatches (Like a Hurricane) and (Miami Squeeze) in fact in "Miami Squeeze" they show the 38KV without an ARCH!

Cheers to the MV 38KV boats!

MikeyFIN 03-29-2009 12:47 PM

Yes I know I stated that and yes there was. I was wrong about it. The one in Norway is just that boat ! ( maybe Trudys??)

Well the DJ boats was the one which etched my mind to get someday a Go-fast boat as I saw it 1989 when it had just arrived here.
Also the same summer in Ibiza had a lasting impression.
Seing a black hulled white deck and bottom 38 TG/ flatdeck with SSM3īs Cleavers and sofort with one foot tall Golden latters on the hull side stating the boats name CEASAR anchored at a sunny bay will never be forgotten. Had to swim to it up close !
Iīve waited this long and maybe soon my time will come, looks promising at least as we speak.

No worries-

I just want to keep EVERYONE honest! HA! HA!

How much did the original six get auctioned off for $$$$$ money wise?

MikeyFIN 03-29-2009 12:57 PM

Iīm sure Iīve heard it someday but forgotten all about it.
I guess 150K wouldnīt be far off ?
