Miami Vice Scarabs

I purchased a 89 38kv here in Hawaii about six months ago. After reading posts on this site and looking at the pictures, it is just like the one in Germany except for the Miami Vice logo. It has the same interior and deck stripes, where "free's" boat has a different deck and arch stripes. Is the boat rare enough that I should keep it all original? It could use paint (has scratches) and a little interior work. How fast will it go with the 2 380hp engines and TRS drives? Any info would help.
Thanks, Mike.

Theres been quite a few post in the past about this boat. I'm sure you'll get a lot of input on this. Glad to see we have friends in the islands!! Whats the weather like over there??

Good luck on your boat!

Hello, One of the Last Scarab
Boats I built while I worked
at Team Scarab was a 29ft with
twin Outboards.
I built it for for a man in
Honolulu and the boat is named
"A-Hui-Hou" its blue/yellow.
Can you send me a photo of the
boat and perhaps info about
who owned it and I might be
able to help you.
I was also involved with the
Scarabs and Scaribs used on
BayWatch both on the mainland
and in Hawaii.

Is there a collector value to the boat? Would I hurt the value by painting the deck a different color or changing the interior?

Mike.

I looked back in my old 80's catalogs and found 2 MV editions. One had a padded sunpad, the other had engine scoops. The arch stripes were different also. One had a horozontil rainbow and the other had almost vertical stripes.

Mike, Yes there is a Collector
Value for a Miami Vice Boat.
I lived in hawaii for a few
years and I don't remember seeing a Miami Vice boat over
there.
I would say to first make sure
it is a Vice Boat and not a
stock boat painted and a arch
added.

Maili Mike 09-16-2003 03:35 AM

How do I tell if its genuine or not?
MikeJ, How do I send you pictures?
I first saw the boat about 5 years ago. It was parked at a friends house for storage. Two years ago it was used as a tour boat at Hawaii Kai. They left it in the water and made a mess of it. It is a documented vessel, named "Nice Vice". I paid $25000. Is that a good deal or not? Thanks for the info so far.
Mike.

Mike J 09-16-2003 06:58 AM

Maili Mike, The 29ft Scarab
"A Hui Hou" is in the Hawaii
Kai area also.
I will be back on sunday and
will send you my shop Email
to send the photos to.
The Vice boats are a little
different in the deck area.

I didn't know scarab made a special edition miami vice scarab. Thats cool. Alot of people get the two boats used on the show confused. The one shown on the credits in the begining of the show is a 39 Chriscraft Stinger. don Johnson on certain episodes actually used his own boat which was a scarab 38KV, It had a cool paint job that i never saw before, sorta purple fading into pink or the other way around. I would like to see it again its been quit some time since I saw it. I called Wellcraft about boats they built and they don't keep records of the boats they build. So I guess if somebody wants a certain scarab badly enough they will pay for it. It only worth what the person that wants it will pay for it.

Mike J 09-20-2003 04:54 PM

Maili Mike, The story of the
Miami Vice boat is the producer of the show went to
Wellcraft and did not like the
deck on the sample boat and
had a photo of the Betty Cook
KAAMA boat and said that was
the deck he wanted, Flat deck
with a fiberglass wind screen
not the plxiGlass one.
So see if you can find a good
photo of Betty Cooks Boat.
The best I can tell there were
100 Miami Vice boats built not
counting the ones for the Show
Same thing happened with the
26ft Scarab F1 Boats a few
years ago, The top deck is a
old deck made for a boat called the Corvette and the
mold was found in a field in
mid florida that everyone thought had been junked.
I think theres a photo of Betty Cooks Boat on a thread
about OLD TIME offshore racing
running now.
I will EMail you a place to
send me your photos.

I got them to work by replacing the ****** with dot "abbreviation for information".

Mike

You have a classic boat, and worth slightly more if it is a true Vice edition. They were a flat deck, and the KV is for Kevlar in the hull.

Boat should do 60-65 w/ 380's in good tune and a clean bottom.

Things to watch for are moisture in the transom/stringers. If you have this get it fixed bya qualified expert in fiberglass boats.

If you upgrade your membership to a gold you can view/post photos. Do it, it's worht it.

Maili Mike 09-26-2003 08:06 PM

Thank you for the information. I guess I am going to have to put it back to original condition. I am not real fond of the purple and blue interior colors, But if it's worth more later on. I would post some pictures, buy the boat is kind of ugly right now. Someone put non-skid paint all over the deck, and then hand painted a thick blue strip down the middle. Maybe when it's fixed I'll post before and after pictures.
If anyone else has pictures that would help in my restoration, please send them to me.
Thanks, Mike.

No information whether anyone bought it.
I'm wondering how Auto-Salon-Singen is going to entertain their customers in future.
Or maybe their incredible showroom with such a unique cars sells itself.

MikeScarab28XLT: how is powerboating in Germany? Do you have pokerruns or rallys there? I might be interested to trailer at least a smaller one from Finland to join if there is something.
At least in Lübeck offshore 1 race in July I saw a lot of offhore boats. Many of them, however, older Formulas.

MikeScarab28XLT 11-26-2003 08:22 AM

Dude, why bother to trailer all the way down to Germany. Let's organize something here in Finland for the next summer.

FlyingFinn 11-26-2003 05:15 PM

yeah

I agree with you.
I have planned something but the
only problem is that there aren't so many boats in Finland. So it might take some time.
It used to be quite different in the Early 90s.
The boats that are going to be there next season that I know are as follows:
Baja 442 in Helsinki
Baja 38 in Mikkeli I guess
Baja 29 in Helsinki?
Powerquest 260 in Helsinki
And then some older boats like Formulas, Performance, Mach 1 etc.
Do you know others?

I saw one Fountain in Lübeck, it was called "No Fear". Well, I guess I am going to call mine "Full Fear" when I buy a big one.
By the way, if someone is interested there is a Sonic 45 -93 for sale in Northern Germany.
It has triple MerCruisers and it is in nice condition. The owner died and they are willing to sell it for a good price. The boat has only about 100 hours.
So if anyone is interested, pm me and I'll send you more info. I have the specs and some pictures.

puder 11-27-2003 12:40 AM

fendari if you organize a poker run in finland i'll come over and run in it!!! if you got space on your boat or any boat in the run i'm in!!!!

i've been wanting to get back to finland for years!

fendari 11-27-2003 10:55 AM

Puder, you're definitely in if we can scrape something up for the summer '04. Helsinki should have been recovered from your previous visit.

Finn, I guess the very limited performance community is mostly located in Helsinki and Turku. In the Helsinki area there are like you mentioned some older Formulas like 357, 303, 311 and 272, Baja 442, Chris craft 385 and 312 stingers, Wellcraft 42 Excalibur, Scarab III's and 38's.

My guess would be that we could easily end up getting some 6-10 boats to participate. That would be a reasonably good start.

38vice 11-29-2003 09:19 AM

hey scarabman, can you tell me how to see the pics of the 38 scarab kv on fastboats.com? i cant seem to find them.

38KV 12-02-2003 05:24 PM

Puder, Santa will get you for that.

puder 12-03-2003 12:07 PM

yeah tell that fat fvck to bring it on!!!! :D

38KV 12-03-2003 08:38 PM

Why not Estonia fendari.I will talk to my friends. But I think we have to do a pitstop at Gotland and fill up gas.How far is it from Helsinki?By the way,Isn`t it only sailors in Estonia?

OBNOXUS21 12-03-2003 09:36 PM

38KV and Fendari---

I am moving to Holland here in just over two weeks. I was always interested to talk to or meet other OSO members from across the pond :p

38KV, I myself am the proud owner of a 1982 377 Scorpian kevlar Scarab!!! Also a 1985 Scarab I. Both are for sale, still they are a blast.

I will still be on OSO while living just south of Utreckt (sp?).

fendari 12-04-2003 03:16 AM

38KV, The distance between Helsinki and Tallinn is only 82 km. It used to be a place for sailors but now I'd say it's 50/50. Anyways let's try to set up something.

Obnoxus, make sure to take the Nordics to your travel plan next summer, you won't be disappointed.

OBNOXUS21 12-04-2003 09:07 AM

"make sure to take the Nordics to your travel plan next summer..."

I will be back here in the mid-west by then boating the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks!!! You would be more than welcome, and if I could suggest you coming late August for the 'Lake Rescue Shoot-Out'.........you won't be disappointed ;)
