Default 5.7LEfi overheating

My mercruiser 350 (5.7LEfi) is runniing too hot, especially at idle --- 180 - 190 degrees. I have a new thermostat installed, have plenty of water coming up from the outdrive, & the manifolds are cool enough to touch, so I assume water is getting out okay. The circulating pump inlet pipe from the thermostat housing is very hot however. I have taken the circulating pump apart & there appears to be nothing wrong with it.
Any ideas? I am mystified.

Verify the accuracy of the guage before you start replacing parts.

Is this a new problem???
