049 Hardened Seats?? (1.88 Exhaust Valves)

I've did several searches on this, and came up with a majority vote on not doing this to the 049 oval port heads (if installing 1.88 exhaust valves) due to the chances of hitting water. Always thought putting big valves in the 049's was the right thing to do.
Are the chances still there if you go with a valve seat with the same OD as the exhaust valve, or at least close, i.e. .010-.030 bigger?
Example of dimensions
Seat OD - 1.88 + ??
Seat ID - 1.5625
Seat Depth - .3125
If the majority of the vote is against this, what's my alternative? The cast iron is not tempered below the exhaust valve now. Wouldn't this beat the seat up really bad? You could tell when milling the heads that the head material got really soft there.

I understand your worries. You can retain the same stock valve size (1.72") or even a 1.84" exhaust valve. Either way they still need to be inconnel valves.
Seven years ago, we were doing some changes in 2 sets of my cousin's oval port heads,.....but they were NOT the 049's. In these particular semi-open chamber heads, they actually flowed better with the 1.84" exhaust valves VS the 1.88" exhaust valve! This was all done by "JimV"....he would be a good person to talk to about it. (616) 889-0928
Whatever route you go, just do a simple bowl/pocket port job while paying close attention to the short side radius's. Nothing fancy is needed. This is one important area where you will gain some good HP.

Actually I didn't think anyone over there would know how to get here.
Yes I do trust you guys. It's just too easy to cut and paste, and maybe get a few more responses. Helps with the statistical decisions you know. My luck, I'll hit water regardless of my research and reasoning.
Good to know there's a fellow chevelle guy lurking around over here though. And, I have a few more sites that I lurk for answers on too. I think maybe there's two more that I've posted questions on.
So, what I really want to know is,..please don't give me a different answer on this site. I really will be in agony then.
