Difference between Formula 382 Fastech and Formula 382 SR-1
Hi!
I am stilll looking for a Formula.
How is the ride in a Formula 382 SR-1 compared to a Formula 382 Fastech? I know its approx. 5 mph slower, but how is it running at high seas, corners, cruise, etc?
Or should I buy a second hand 353 Fastech if I can not afford to buy the 382 Fastech? A 382 SR-1 is normally slightly less expensive than a 353 Fastech.

I personally feel a conventional "deep vee" can be "trusted" more than a step-bottom. The knock on step bottoms is that they will tend to "slide around" on you much easier. It only stands to reason, the hulls are "areated", thus less friction to prevent slides. Yes they are faster, but if your running along at speed, spot a debris in the water immediately ahead of you, your natural reaction is going to be to haul the wheel over hard. That has been the cause of quite a few accidents in step bottom hulls. I would buy the 382 SR1, and the money I saved, I would put in the motors. I have heeled my 311 SR1 over, DRASTICALLY, twice to avoid debris, and it felt like it was on rails. I have driven 7/8 step bottoms (various makes), and have turned them semi-sharply to feel for myself, and did not like it. Just my two cents worth. Troutly probably has good feedback on this issue.

If it was me, I'd get a 353 Fastech. Nice big boat, but still quite a bit faster than the 382 in either configuration. As far as the step hull, just take the advice on how to drive it. There is PLENTY of advice on OSO about it.

Just spoke with a Formula tech rep on a 353 at our shop, They have a customer who purchased a 382 Fastech poker run edition and is putting in sterling 1200's, how fast do you want to go?? But the 353 has to be the best handling of the formulas BY FAR!!!
