You are correct.

LAriverratt 11-15-2013 05:28 AM

not the numbers I have been hearing...110-112. tops...not that it can't be done tho... this was run at havasu looks like. so dry air cool temp maybe, fresh water. any of you running mods on xs's????

what do you think the 308 model would run set up right with mods????

Lake rat Skater 11-15-2013 07:16 AM

A 308 is much larger than a 28 and is great in big water, from what I hear with 300 xs they run around 100-105. With DBR level 1 kits I would say 105-108 range. Like you said yourself many factors come into play such as set up and air temp. A fiend of mine has a 28 with 300 x motors and in the summer heat it will run around 112, but in the fall when the temp drops into the 50's the thing will run mid to high teens.

Were all 28 skaters epoxy boats or is there much of a difference in lay up and materials used from ones build in the early nineties to ones build more recently?

LAriverratt 11-15-2013 07:37 AM

the 30 is much larger for sure...pic on S&F has a 28 and 30 sitting side by side. you can really see the difference. would like to see a DW outboard 32 and a 308 side buy side too.

Good question on the lay ups...have no idea...mine is hull #1, guessing they made some changes along the way but maybe not. wonder what the real world lay up diff is between the DW and the skater too????

kinda off topic here now lol... I do have a question on windshields....would any of the wrap windshields for the 30 I/O models fit the 308???? has there been a 30 outboard with a wraparound built????

Lake rat Skater 11-15-2013 09:41 AM

Back on the windshield topic the wraparounds from the factory are only on flat deck boats. I know of two 30 outboards that have been built from the factory with flat decks and wrap around windshield. One I think is owned by jimmy johns and is a four seater, a pic is on page 2 of this thread, the other I know was at Miami boat show a few years ago. Both are gorgeous,

Double Rigged 11-15-2013 04:18 PM

I have only seen two 30's also with wrap around windshield. Same two boats as listed above. Living in S. FL it is always hot most of the time and high humidity. I am looking forward to making some runs this winter if and when we ever get a cold front.

LAriverratt 11-16-2013 06:28 AM

well we did have back mornings here with frost but its up in the 70's and 80's again now.

Skater30 06-10-2014 09:54 AM

For anyone interested, I have a brand new (never-installed) Aeromarine windshield for a 28 Skater for sale. Please PM me for details. - Dale

NAVISPEED1 08-14-2014 01:51 PM

Chris Mills - Boat Customs - 517-712-3512. He has the tooling for the insert as well as installs them. Jim Lee / Lee Aerospace is making the glass. (Thats his boat)

Ive seen it, it looks amazing.

The thing is though it is not just a bolt on windshield, I believe it requires a fair amount of glass work

I know this kinda stuff isn't cheap to layout, design and get made but 20k holy he!! that's steap!!! and then you have to do glass work on top of that...puts a hell of an increase on the resto of your 28 LOL

Yes it does. That set up is not for the meek. It will put your boat in another league of expense!

Boatlesss 08-15-2014 06:44 PM

So 20k plus probably another 20k to install and it slows the boat down and you have to look over it?

Looks like aeomarines windshields are a deal

That sounds like a lot of speculation.. I would encourage a call to boat customs.

Really? Someone said 20k for the parts maybe that's just for the plastic? But 20k for installation is not off as that's a lot of work and add paint and probably a new dashboard and on and on. Reading this thread the Aeromarine one is fat less $$$ a lot lighter and does not cost any speed and installation has to be a lot less involved

Tborisch 08-15-2014 08:07 PM

I would encourage anybody shopping for a windshield upgrade on any boat to call Boat Customs.

I've seen 3 total conversions now, and they look amazing. I don't believe them to be as expensive as what you are claiming.

Just weigh all your options guys. This is a nice product.

I agree. It is a first class product and looks factory. If I were going to paint my boat or do a restoration I would defintely consider getting one. Unfortunately for me it was not ready at the time I decided to add one to my boat. When I spoke to Chris sometime ago he had indicated some pricing but it was not anywhere near 40k. A wraparound from Skater on a new boat is about 20k or so.
Maybe he can jump on and let everyone know what is the approximate cost. It sure would stop all the speculation.

I asked Chris about a ballpark price after a ride in Jim's. He gave me a rough number, one that he wanted to double check before giving an official quote, and it was significantly less than 40k.

Ryan Beckley 08-16-2014 12:32 PM

So why beat around the bush, just post what you were quoted..... why does everything have to be triple top secret on here..... LOL.

LV 08-16-2014 06:22 PM

Pricing depends on what you want to do, how far you want to take it just like anything else in life. Believe me when I say there is a ton of work to convert one of these. To do it the right way like Skater and Boat Customs does will get you a factory look that everybody wants. Its certainly not the cheapest option but again we didn't pick the cheapest sport either.I will say I feel like I'm in a brand new boat at a fraction of the cost of a new boat.I couldnt be more happy with my decision. It's pretty nice to be able to hold a conversation without yelling over 100mph.

Boatlesss 08-17-2014 12:54 AM

Ryan maybe everyone should just go to skater as they can do it better than anyone else anyway.

Understand what you're saying, it was a ballpark range, he wanted to check into how much labor he actually had into it. Not trying to be secretive, I just don't want to post any misinformation.

LAriverratt 08-18-2014 05:41 AM

LV's boat is spectacular for sure and if one was wanting a total makeover you have to look into every option. If I was to go through my 28 I'd surly give them a call and want to take a look at Jim's to see for myself if I thought it was worth the extra $...but 20k is still a big # for a windshield if the funds were coming out of my wallet LOL.

Hey guys just to clearlfy Jim's 28 was a concept with many variables. We have endless hours in designing and engineering this conversion. The boat was completely stripe to bare hull and rework from scratch, with new engines, paint, interior, and windshield. The cost of Jim's conversion can not even be calculated luckily he's a great guy and good friend. We now have data for future conversions.
Here is a quote from what we learned and apply's to almost any 28 Skater Windshield conversion. We understand this mod is not for everyone, but sure look forward to working with many great customers.
We are hoping to cut cost with efficiency in the near future.

I drove Jim's 28 at Supercat Fest. It was a factory spec job and paint was awesome. Wind was eliminated and Jim Sykes and I could carry on a conversation at WOT. Chris did an excellent job on Jim's boat.

You did a beautiful job on this 28 Chris, and it's priced very fair for what you did (it's exactly what I'd expect to pay with my local glass guy). Yes, it's a lot of money to spend on a 28, but the guy obviously has it to spend so who cares! BTW, my 30 still looks as good as the day you painted it way back in 2007!

Hey guys, I still have this windshield for sale. I'll let it go for half of what I paid for it - I just want it out of my garage at this point! It is cut-down from the standard 8" to 6", but it has never even been installed. Includes all pieces/hardware.
