Mobile1 28 Skater

Does anyone have any pictures or info on race history of the 94' 28 Skater that ran as the Mobile1 boat, later known as Secret Agent? Thanks in advance,

Larry

Yes not sure how the boat changed but I was the one who originally rigged the boat and as 2 others for the owner who is a friend of mine. Not sure what happened to it after he sold it. Was the best running 28 skater of its day.

Larry Gempp Jr. 06-10-2014 06:52 AM

I got it....just trying to find out some of the race history on it. I'm doing the tanks right now...On one side the balsa core was all saturated with fuel, the other not so bad.

Onetime 06-10-2014 09:19 AM

I looked at that boat last year. Did you buy it from Pete near Rochester, NY? Did he come down in price? I loved the boat, big project, just couldn't make the numbers work.

I believe Paul Whittier bought it in 1996 and made it Secret Agent. Paul had Pete at Skater build him a 28 canopied race hull and campaigned it in 1995. After continually getting beat by Mobil 1 he talked Bob into selling to him. A friend of mine drove it with Paul during one race out west and he said the boat was just the fastest 28 in the race. Could easily reel in any of the other 28's at will.
Don't know who bought it after Paul. Pete said he bought it at a bank auction.
Here's a video of it running after Paul sold it

Keep us posted on your progress. What are your plans for it?

Larry Gempp Jr. 06-10-2014 11:13 AM

I'm happy with what I got it for. The 28's aren't getting any cheaper it seems. I'm okay doing the restoration cause I can do it exactly how I want it. I'm fixing the tank areas then putting in removable ones and converting to left hand steer for this year. Over the winter I'll do an overhaul and convert to a pleasure boat with a full interior and see how busy Mitcher T is....

.

what made this 28 faster than all of the other 28's ?

btw, congrats Larry !

I was talking to Pete at Skater about this boat and it's performance. All we could both come up with is some are just faster then others. You build two engines identical and one makes more power then the other. Same kind of thing.

It was a race only boat so lighter then a recreational or race/pleasure. Also no canopies as most race only hulls have so lighter then most race only boats.

LAriverratt 06-10-2014 05:24 PM

blue printed bottom? I would think a race hull would be from the factory huh???

Double Rigged 06-10-2014 07:12 PM

I could tell you guys but I was sworn in under oath not to share any vital information. LOL I will tell you this there are a lot of things more than just the boat. We kick the crap out of some of the best Mercury backed teams out there with 2.5 carb motors. It is all about the set up!!!!

Onetime 06-10-2014 07:17 PM

And then some!!!

After looking at many Skater bottoms I think they are all the equivalent of a blueprinted bottom.

Congrats Larry. Nice find.

Larry Gempp Jr. 06-10-2014 09:53 PM

Thanks guys. I'm very excited
I've wanted a 28 for a long time and I love projects, so this fit the bill perfectly. I'll get some pictures up soon. This was on the way home from New York a few weeks ago.....

looks better in your pics than the advertisements - enjoy!

....keeping with the 2.5's or going to xs?

Larry Gempp Jr. 06-10-2014 10:31 PM

She just needs some TLC and love.....going through the 2.5's for the rest of summer. I'll decide this winter if I'll put a set of 3.4's on it. :evilb:

By 3.4's do you mean bored 3 liter mercs or OMC's?

It is against the laws of Skaternation to install OMC's on a Skater!!!!

noli 06-11-2014 01:49 PM

.

could be Mercs?

I couldn't agree more, I thought simon Motorsports did big bore kits for mercury 3 liters, was wondering if an xs stroker crank would net 3.4?

Lake rat Skater 06-11-2014 02:49 PM

Do you run conned of sportmaster lowers on the e-tecs?

LAriverratt 06-11-2014 03:00 PM

as much as I love mercury outboards, they need someone to one up them so we can get our super light 400+hp outboards da@mn it!!!:boat:

Larry Gempp Jr. 06-11-2014 03:06 PM

I run lightnings on the singles and offshores on the twin. ALL coned. This is a motor I did 4 years ago. Still have it.

LAriverratt 06-11-2014 03:22 PM

any idea where you are hp wise? rpm range and of course...can you build me 2 with 3 year warranty on each LOL.

Larry Gempp Jr. 06-11-2014 03:37 PM

Yes, cant say, and nope. I'm not posting #'s anymore. Everyone gets into a passing match with me when I posted results in the past. Anyone can look up results of any of the races/shootouts I've been too up in my neck of the woods and draw their own conclusion. I hate not being forthcoming, but it's just not worth it for me to prove anything to anyone. I've run Merc's before, so the 2.5 is not new to me. I'm looking forward to hearing the 2.5's screaming behind me....Like I said, I'll decide if I'll keep the 2.5's after the boating season is over. I'm just stoked I got a 28 Skater!

Double Rigged 06-11-2014 03:43 PM

Larry
Motor looks nice. Have heard good things about BRP. There was a 28 Skater that was done with etec's that went over seas. Here is a video of the boat on YouTube. Looks like they need some solid motor mounts.

LAriverratt 06-11-2014 03:57 PM

I understand...bad azz looking with the carbon fiber...looks better than those proto type 400 merc :(

Larry Gempp Jr. 06-11-2014 04:00 PM

Those motors need a lot more than solid motor mounts! Lol! I've talked to Salstrip a few times. There doing good things...

NAVISPEED1 06-13-2014 09:44 AM

Larry congrats on the 28 Skater, seems like a cool project!
Keep the pics coming. How reliable are the E-tecs? if you go that route, would you go with the 250's HO or 300's?
Ivan

Larry Gempp Jr. 06-13-2014 07:35 PM

Same powerheads, different mid/gearcase options. Finishing up the tanks the next few days then going through the 2.5 280's it came with....

cowisl 06-17-2014 02:53 PM

Any other pics?

Larry Gempp Jr. 06-17-2014 11:19 PM

She fit in the garage with 3" to spare!

I will be re-doing the dash this winter...

Larry Gempp Jr. 06-17-2014 11:29 PM

Quick question, obviously I come from smaller outboards, and have always used a hot foot. I couldn't imagine driving a boat without one. Does anybody use a hot foot on their 28?

Nice Pair 06-18-2014 12:35 AM

I'm using In-Control on 2) twin engined outboard boats.
Typically I don't run offshore (big water) so I don't know if thats the hot set up for rough water.

Nice Skater, on the last pic, are those motors mounted with the tops wider than the lowers or is the camera angle making it look like it?

speicher lane 06-18-2014 06:00 AM

I would say the cowls are sitting on the back of the boat deck while the engines are being looked at/serviced so you are seeing the front of the cowls on a side view pic of the boat

Larry Gempp Jr. 06-18-2014 07:58 AM

Cowls are sitting on the swim platform, not motors. that's exactly what I was thinking, the In-control splitfoot. I'm running on small lakes too.

Nice Pair 06-18-2014 09:11 AM

I see it now, gett'n old is a b*tch.
On my Talon I used the throttle sticks as an over-ride for a cruise setting.
