Mark,
I went with the Warlock Marine unit.
Don't get me wrong, the guys at WPM have been great and I've had no complaints with the quailty of their work... I just don't think a cable driven hydraulic ram setup is that great of an idea IMHO. Everyone talks about the safety external steering if an engine fails. Well, I had the engine quit twice this season at over 80 mph. Thank God I was going straight, and think God nothing got infornt of me. Bottom line, there is almost no way to turn the drives once the pump is turned off. The little plunger valve in the cable driven rack just doesn't have enough capacity to move the rams without any assist. Also, when you try to move the drives with the cable helm, you will most likely stretch the schit out of the cable system.
The Char-Lyn pumps that the full hydraulic systems use, have enough pump capacity to move the steering rams (quite nicely I might add) without any assistance from the pump(s). Also, there is no cable slack in the hydraulic helm system.
Again, this is just my $0.02
I also had a hack job done on my steering ram insallation, so my opinion might be biased a little as well. The additional cost of the full helm is about $1000 all said and done.

How does a full system work, exactly? Is the helm unit like the master cylinder, and the drive rams the slave cylinders? If so, why the need for any pump at all in the system?
The steering hasn't been done yet, but very soon, so I gotta make my mind up on this pretty quick - adding new motor and o/d - the funds start getting tight, know what I mean? Most of this these mods are cash out of pocket, not financed money. I was set on saving the $G and just going add-on... Anyone else wanna chime in on this one?

Imco has a few good drawings about full hydraulic setups:
http://www.imcomarine.com/stern/hk.html Single Pump System
http://www.imcomarine.com/stern/hk4.html Two Pump System (option for twins)
They make a full stand alone system for outboards (no power assist pump needed), but they are pricey and have a higher lock to lock wheel turn count.

I've had boats with both full hydraulic, and an add on system. The add on is great, but not needed for what I'm trying to do with this light boat.

So have you decided to put your big power into your Sunsation yet ?

Well I bought an upgrade this weekend that I've been thining about for a long time. Since Karen and I like to boat at night and I refuse to mount a remote controlled spotlight on the 288 and since I was in NYC over the weekend.... I did some shopping at the electronic shops along Broadway near Times Square and compared prices and....
I bought some Bushnell Night Vision Goggles this morning. The guy in the store was classic. Everytime I headed for the door the price went lower. After 5 trips to the door and the last through the door we finally arrived at a price (8% NY sales tax included). I tried them out tonight and oh yea...they work great.... They are totally kick ass. No worrying this summer about getting home before dark.
yea!

RumRunner,
Glad to hear that about the steering. Infact I have heard through some good sources that the add on is actually preferable to the full hydraulic for this boat size. I'm not sure if I would totally agree but the half system should be fine. I'm going to give it a try.
