The answer is a "hmmmmm'. It would be a snap decision but the Race Hatch to accomodate a blower motor is an added expense that I have to take into consideration.
I'll definately be putting on a K&N Flame Arrestor and a larger sea water strainer for the A/C unit. Many of the Marina's on the Chesapeake have very shallow water with mucky bottoms and the cooling lines for the A/C unit got clogged with muck after 2 months of use (The factory was kind enough to clean it out for me). The strainer installed while certainly adequate is a little small due to the nature of where I boat and the water, so I'll be replacing it with a unit that has top access instead of a screw on unit.

Jeffreyboy, That Whipple Charged 454 should have no problems fitting under the stock hatch, I ran a unintercooled B&M Supercharger on my 288 with a large stainless flame arrestor and still had plenty of clearance.
In the worst case scenerio you could simply raise the hatch hinges or use a "Tub" installed into the underside of you hatch.

I'll have to measure...
The 496/HO is fairly low profile. I'll get Karen to lower the hatch with me in the engine compartment and do some measuring... My only fear is that she won't raise the hatch when I'm done measuring....
