Re: 1400 HP Turbine Y2K Rocketship in the works !!!
There is a skater up by me that run turbines and has full F/N/R shifting capabilites....Pretty sure he is running #6's but dinged up a few props and cost him $25k Canadian a prop to replace them! There seems to be a couple of different drives that would work with a turbine application....what is considered the best? (#6, ASD, Sage, Weissmam) or do they all have their pros and cons?

If you are talking about "MY WAY" then he is using Sage crashboxes (SCS) with the Turbine brake kit on them and yes they are Merc#6.
They all have pro's and con's except for the Sage units. They are unbeliveable. (Been to the shop and seen them)
Anything that will handle the power of a piston engine of the same hp will take a turbine no problem. You just have to be careful about how hard you hit the throttles because of the massive torque the turbines put out.
We have a boat in the shop right now that has Weissman crashboxes in it custom for the turbine engines as well and that boat is way easier around the dock than a piston powered boat. With the driveshaft brake and a "Free Turbine" engine you can actually stop the power shaft and still have the engine running. That way you are easier on the crashbox and the drive. Not to mention you have absolute control over the spinning of the prop. tiny little shots of thrust just by actuating the brake system. it is very precise. I will try to post a shot of our boat at the Toronto boat show that I had to back into a VERY restricted berth... got it on the first try with no fuss.
Anyhow.. look forward to seeing this and many other turbine boats out on the water... It is the way to go for sure. (Reliability... how about 3000 hours to overhaul. Yes there is supposed to be three zeros there!)

Rick,
I remember awhile back someone told me that JC was thinking of building a Y2K with a little bigger engine compartment to accomadate twin staggered Merc 496's. I was wondering if this project ever happened or not????
Thanks,
DPT

Dpi,
Awhile back JC and JC jr. were taking about it, but nothing materialized about it. It would be no big deal to do.... just alot of $$$$$$

Re: 1400 HP Turbine Y2K Rocketship in the works !!!
Just got off the phone with Erick, the turbine mechanic, that is going to put the 1400 hp in our Y2K.
As I said I would do, here are the prices.
T58-8 GE Turbine $ 50,000
Sage # 8 drive $ 20,000
Sage, zero effort shiftable tranny $ 5,000
TOTAL $ 75,000.00
He was also telling me that there is a T53 that is also 1400 hp, but is only 4' long !! Hmmmmmm He sold one last summer for 22k.
Erick gave me a link for the Y2K with the motor that is going in it. Once you get to the site. Go to Turbine Projects, then scroll down to Medium turbine boat. And you'll hear all about the motor and boat deal.
Happy Reading !!
