The ultimate Battle on he Bay, between Y2K's

This is getting exciting! The Turbine is at MRD getting rigged with 1,370 horsepower General Electric Turboshaft T58. And Robs Motor will be here any day for the other Y2K. Both boats might be done around the same time! Robs motor is putting out 1350. Although his motor is running a smaller pully, resulting in 1000Hp. A quick pully change is all thats needed for this to happen. How cool would this be. 2 Y2K's running down the bay at well over 100. I wonder which one would be faster. I'm kinka leaning towards the Turbine.

TeamSaris 02-29-2008 06:12 AM

Turbine-Its lighter,and has that drive.
Although,Id rather have Robs motor over a turbine.

z.zuperboat 02-29-2008 06:25 AM

The turbine mite be lighter but the fuel it needs is not !!

FX10 02-29-2008 07:00 AM

Mike, the Turbine eats around the same amount of fuel as a comparable HP piston motor. If dino only puts in 100 gallons like a standard fuel tank, he will be alittle lighter. But not much. Don't forget about the weight of the additional fuel tanks, foam, glass and wood to hold them in, in the Turbine.

Pat McPherson 02-29-2008 07:02 AM

My money is on the Zuperboat taking them both out...:party-smiley-004:

z.zuperboat 02-29-2008 07:20 AM

Thanks for the vote of confidence Pat ! I have to find the time to send the motor to the dyno. The new hatch is almost complete and it looks mean so the boat better back it up.
Rick if the turbine need the same fuel as a big inch motor then Y 4 gas tanks ? Are they planning so new record from NY to florida ?

Big Time 02-29-2008 11:42 AM

Can't wait for the results! Any pics of the engine?

Superbabi 02-29-2008 01:23 PM

:DLove it, great idea, Ripping up the Great South Bay !!!!! The question is, will Dino fire up the rocket, and will Rob turn up the boost ??? :D

z.zuperboat 02-29-2008 01:49 PM

Talk is good !! Dont count out Ritchie ZUL ! They have to beat him first. That boats fast with pump gas and a mild tune !! Im sure now that the boats coming around we can expect a few more MPH from Ritchie !!

You can take them Zup...:evilb:

That turbine boat is going to take a lot of work/time to get dialed in.
Rob can get good advise from Dave as he has already dialed in with the Konrad.
Zup just needs to dig deep in to his pocket and buy a prop or two.
Zul??

Superbabi 02-29-2008 02:20 PM

So let me understand this clear and simple, are we talking 4 Y2K's making this speed run ??? Rob, Dino, Zul, Zuperboat ???

Well G.
Technically the boats you have listed are all 30’ Supers but not all Y2Ks.
The Zuperboat has the prototype Y2K bottom with a Tempest deck.
ZUL's boat is a Tempest with a modified/custom step bottom.
This could be real fun to watch...:D:D:D

Thats ok Pat, there all part of the Superboat family !!! Plus our very own favorite boat builder ( FX-10 ) built 2 of them !!!!

tripps 02-29-2008 07:25 PM

Are they charging admission for this event??? ,Y2Kbattle on the bay,2008 version, what a piece of history for Superboats tripps

Pure Energy 02-29-2008 08:17 PM

If you guys keep yapp'in, I'm gonna throw on a smaller pully and let you suck on some rusta!!!:cool-smiley-011:

MDGperformance 02-29-2008 09:53 PM

Count me in, i have a few tricks up my sleeve,KE intake with whipple 305 ,was talking to keith at miami show, what do you guys think? One badass set up

Ann now 2 more, Pure Energy and Dave ( MDG PERF. ) this is getting real good !!!!

Pure Energy 03-01-2008 09:15 AM

Hey Gary, what's your motor status??

z.zuperboat 03-01-2008 09:30 AM

intercooler

2 Attachment(s)
Time to make room for the intercooler . Still has alot of finishing work but it should catch some cold air maybe even enough for a turbine!!

How did you start this project? What is the gray material made of?

Nice work Mike.
I knew you could swing wrenches but I didn't know that you could do body work too...:cool-smiley-011:

z.zuperboat 03-03-2008 10:38 AM

Hopefully have it painted by the weekend. Once done ill post more pics with the front grill and rear doors installed. I have to give Rick some credit pushing me to do it and with some tricks of the trade. I got the scoop idea from the 36 nortech. Thats my next boat that I cant afford so Ive decided to get one piece by piece !!
Started by shaping foam and covering with glass.

Mikes an X Vette Customizer. This stuff is kids stuff to him. ;)

Turbokart 03-06-2008 07:33 PM

my vote is for the turbine.

fuel burn is less for the turbine at full throttle.

Reason for the 4 fuel tanks is because I hate stopping to get fuel, and its not too easy to find Jet fuel on the water.

FX10 03-14-2008 06:52 AM

Dino,
I have a question about the gear reduction box on the turbine. I know the one you have reduces the Turbines RPM's to 6000.
Is it possible to get one the reduces to 7000RPM ?
The reason I'm asking is because there are some boats out there running big motors, such as On The Chip. I believe Curtis's motors are capable of turning well over 7K. They were built by Jeff Cropper, J C Performance. As far as the additional 1000RPM. I don't see the turbine having a problem with the torque needed for the xtra RPM. And it might yield more MPH.
As for props. Jeff has quite a few props for #6 drives. He brought one by for initial testing. I'm sure if Skippy doesn't have the props needed, Jeff could help you out with the dialing in. Jeff is one of the most experienced drivers in a single engine performance boat going over 100.

z.zuperboat 03-14-2008 12:24 PM

My money this year is on Zul 1st Turbine 2nd Rob 3rd and myself 4th. Whats the vig on this one ?

Turbokart 03-14-2008 01:05 PM

Rick,

The output reduction gearbox that I am using is the same mil-spec gearbox that was designed for the engine and used on helicopters. I don't think that there is one that runs at 7,000 rpm. If you wanted, you would have to have one built to reduce from the 20,000 rpm turbine speed to 7,000 rpm.

Do most other high performance boats use some kind of gear reduction after the engine, either in the transmission or in the drive, so that prop speed is less than engine speed? How many boats have props that are turning at 7,000 rpm?

Dino

What power does Zul have ???

Turbokart 03-14-2008 01:20 PM

I'll just keep running until the other guys blow their engines. :D:D:D :cool-smiley-011:

I wonder what reduction Jet Set has???,and Superboat,i have the winning combo 4 u ,the BLUE BOTTLE hahaha tripps ps go do some sandin haha

Not trying to be mean. But I think Zul is going to get "SPANKED" soooooo bad, he's going to build a 1500HP motor. And as Dino said "we'll see who blows first."
BTW, Dino. I apologise. I just did the calculations with respect to the ratios of a #6 running 1.50 gears. Seems that, since your drive is a "ZERO" effort, and is running direct drive, 1:1 your going to do some major spanking. I like Ritchie, but I don't think he will be able to come close. No where near close. Just my opinion.

Tripps,
Jet set probably has the same 6000 reduction box. Then again .... Jet Set does around 200.

Turbokart 03-14-2008 09:19 PM

Rick,

No need to apologize. I'm anxious to see how this boat really runs but I think it will be a strong performer. Turbines have their advantages and disadvantages. One thing is for sure, it will probably take a while to get the prop and weight distribution dialed in since we are dealing with a new set up.

That, and I'm not sure if I have the cojones to run 120+ mph on the water, although I've got a buddy who would. I'll do 180 mph in a car without blinking an eye, but on the water is a whole different animal.

Dino

z.zuperboat 03-15-2008 07:08 AM

Zul,s power is actually quite modest ! Im sure it makes good power for inch of the motor. He could go to the shelf and make any power he wants. I dont think he.s like that, hes more of a run what you brung guy. As far as the turbine im sure the boat will be number 1 some day but this year and I stress this year my money,s on Zuls boat !
Dinos rite about speed being different on water, Its a new ride for him and he,s going to need some time to get comfortable.

z.zuperboat 03-15-2008 07:20 AM

Rick ever make a hatch for the turbine ? I did see the air insert but never noticed the hatch !
Anybody else have problems with OSO and keep getting knocked off !! Started about 2 weeks ago. If i dont type fast enough im out !!

FX10 03-15-2008 08:18 AM

MIke,
We have to wait till all the exhaust plumbing is done before we make the hach.
And no for OSO problems.

If i put Superboat badges on my Activator, can i be a part of this.:angry-smiley-038:Thanks Rick for the kind words:cool-smiley-027:

FX10 03-15-2008 10:13 AM

Whats up Jeff! I was telling Dino he should have you do the dialing in. Hell, your 32 Activator with a single is waaaaay up there in speed. And you know the hull characteristics of the Y2K. Pm Dino and see if can work.
