Removing the fuel tank
Yes, Kevindw, she actually did get wet! It took 2 men, 3.5 years, and 1,400 miles of driving as foreplay to make it happen though. Thing is, it was short lived, and until she moves with my hand on the throttles, she's still a virgin ;-)
Here's a couple more pics of 'wet day': http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...0918-00024.jpg http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...0918-00031.jpg I've been working on getting the big, third fuel tank out that's down in the cabin, and man is that thing ever IN there! Glassed to the stringers, then the floorboards over top butting right up to it, then glassed over again. Kudos to Rick for making it extremely secure. That tank would make it around the world. Unfortunately for me, it's not easy to get out. First step was to cut gently around the perimiter to remove the fiberglass covering. Next was to pull the tank up. Won't budge. Then, without knowing exactly where the stringers are (completely hidden) and being mindful not to cut into them, it's time to get a closer look by cutting the top of the tank off. The baffles make that task easier said than done, so it comes off in three sections: http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...d/IMG_2923.jpg http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...d/IMG_2924.jpg Bend the sides in to separate tank from the foam surrounding it, and pull it up. Won't budge. Hmmm. Cut holes at intersection of vertical and horizontal planes (very sturdy), attach a shackle, a 1 ton chain fall to a 4x4 beam across the top and bingo... http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...d/IMG_2920.jpg ...beam starts to snap. Tank won't budge. Now that I've come this far, and I don't want to damage the structure of the boat, I'm begging for some insight if the tank is screwed in at the ends (on a flange) or if it was set down in a shallow bath of 5200, or anything else. Rick? Please help! Thanks, Dave 1995 Superboat 24 w/2007 300HPDI 2009 Superboat 34 w/ TBD |
Whats happening Dave. Your almost there. Nice job so far. From what I see in the picture, you need to remove more of the foam surrounding the tank. A long (10") construction blade on a sawsall usually does the trick. There should be around 1" of foam around the tank. The tank sits between the stringers, so use them as a guide when cutting. Cut all the glass back to the stringers. Then you have to get creative on how to dig the foam out between the stringers and tank. The more you slice it up with the blade, the easier it will be to get the foam out.
Once foam is out. You'll make a bridge out of 4" X 4"'s. As I said before. The stringers are running parallel with the tank. Say the height of the tank is 6" above the stringers. Cut 2 pieces of 4 X 4, 10" long for the feet. These are to be put on either side of the tank, directly on top of the stringers. Measure across the tank, and cut another piece of 4 X 4 to span across the tank and feet. Next comes the 2 ton bottle jack and a chain. I usually make the bridge directly over the tank fill, and wrap the chain (or strap) under the fill. So now you have the chain wrapped under the fill and coming up on both sides of the 4 X 4, and going over the top of the bottle jack. Take up as much slack as you can, and pump away. 2 tons of pressure should be enough to pry the tank up. You might have to drill a hole in one of the baffles on the other side of the tank to get the other side up. But that should do it. Cutting the top the way you did actually made it harder. When lifting. The sides will have a tendency to bow out, rather then keep it's shape. Hope this helps. Good Luck Rick |

Very nice! How does she run?
It's the most amazing boat I've ever driven, but it goes a little too slow so I hope it can become an engine change this winter. Does anyone know if it's possible to get the Superboat logo so I can make new decals? |

additionally, if you ever need the Superboat logo for stitching vinyl like bolsters or the bench in the back, or the vinyl on your engine hatch, PPI in Florida has the art work for that
keep the pics comin' on the changes/additions you'll make. |
Thanks very much for the advice Rick, I really appreciate it! Glad to know that it's not screwed down somewhere. I didn't want to hack the tank apart, but since I didn't know what might be lurking beneath, it was the safe play.
So basically, after cutting the wood back to the stringers and getting as much foam out as I can, I should make a little "bridge" over the tank, as compact as possible for maximum strength, and jack away. I like it! If I need to, I might try and work a bandsaw blade underneath the tank and cut along the bottom to separate it from the foam. Thanks again, and I'll let you know how it goes. Dave |

Yep, that's your old boat! I bought it off the lady who survived her husband. He was a young guy who really loved that boat, and it was a difficult purchase due to the situation (and of course, more difficult for her to sell it). Really nice lady though. I sold the motor, and I think the buyer put it on an Allison or a Hydrostream. I always wondered where it came from, so excited to find this out. Were you the original owner? Did it have grey upholstery? What motor was on it before the 225x? So many questions! Dave |
I Picked It Up From My Friend And He Was The Original Owner It Was Powered With A 225 carb 3 Liter Then The 225X ,,The Best I Saw With It Was 72 ,,,I Think The Guy I Sold It To Changed The Interior And Put A Stereo In It ,,,It Came With The Grey Int,,,And Yes They Were Real Nice People Sad He Passed,,,Hows It Go With That 300 On It???
|
That's right, he had the stereo system installed, and the cockpit was redone in white upholstery with red and black. He powder coated all the seat supports white as well.
Here's my favourite shot that really shows off the white, red & black of the interior!! :) http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...d/DSC01286.jpg Ok, this one is alright too: http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...d/DSC01076.jpg Whilst I was rigging the 300 HPDI on it, I also put in a new stereo head unit, 6ch amp, a second pair of component speakers, all new Livorsi gauges and a GPSMap 640 chartplotter. You can sort of see the extra speakers and gauges in these shots (in a lock and a huge marine railway lift along the Trent-Severn waterway): http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...d/DSC02753.jpg http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...d/DSC02761.jpg The best I got with the 225x was 65mph. It's most likely due to the motor not in peak form having some broken reed petals. The water was farile calm and the boat had stuff in it, so I never really gave it a good chance. With the 300 it runs 76. I'm going to see if I can top that this weekend before I take it out for the winter. |
What's your setup like? Setback, engine height, etc???
|
BTW Red, white and Black looks awesome! :-)
|
Nice pics!

What in the hell kind of boat launch is that ? Looks more like a park ride .............

I've watched videos of it and its pretty interesting to see. |
How much do the charge to go through there?
|
Kevindw:
Setup is an 12" Stainless Marine bracket and 27" yamaha prop. Don't know the height off hand, but the Vmax motors have a slightly shorter lower unit than regular lowers OCCJoe: ndaniels is right, it's the Big Chute marine railway. Big carrier with a complex, multi configurable set of straps and hydraulic rams under the floor that rise up and stabilize all the boat hulls. Lifts you about 60ft up and over a road. Designed to keep invasive marine species from being transferred from one ecosystem to another. It's one of 45 locks and lifts in a 250 mile long inland waterway of lakes, rivers and canals. Dave M: Lock fees and other info can be found here: http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/on/trent...e.asp?park=102 |
They have some really neat locks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mnf2f...eature=related

Nice!

Since Noli had some gauges and the VesselView monitor in the dash, and I'm going with a different set up, I had all the cut-outs filled in, re-gelled and refinished so that I can have a clean 'canvas' to work with.
I took my boat to Tuff Marine in southern Ontario (www.tuffmarine.com) to have this done. Mark Weigl is the owner of Tuff, who is an ex offshore racer turned performance boat builder. What's remarkable, and unusual, is that his wife was his racing partner (Mark on throttles, Dana at the wheel), and the duo in their various Skaters won many an APBA championship and other accolades in the late 80's and early 90's. Mark is meticulous in the construction of his boats. The attention to detail and flawless fit & finish are the first thing you'll notice when you see a Tuff. Here is a pic of the 34's dashboard now. It truly looks as if it were brand new: http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...d/IMG_2921.jpg This is the area below and behind the controls (and partially under the gunwale), where the ignition switches and kill switch holes used to be: http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...d/IMG_2922.jpg It's kind of sad that it looks so nice, because I'm just going to end up cutting new holes in it anyway!!! I didn't get a chance to work any further on removing the tank this weekend, and won't for a while because I'm going on vacation for a couple of weeks starting next weekend (Halloween in Lahaina baby!!) BTW, I went 77.2 MPH in my 24' yesterday. Not bad for a bone stock 300 HPDI I say :-) Cheers, Dave |
Looks like he did a great job.. I've kicked around filling one hole on my 24s dash that I wish I wouldn't have done.
Thanks for keeping the pics and updates coming! Also, great #s on your 24.. congrats. |
Wow Tuff did an awesome job. You can't even tell there were holes there.
Keep the pics comin' :) |
I'm afraid that if I can't find a nearby, indoor, heated storage place for the winter that's affordable, I won't have much progress or pics to update on. I'm trying to find a place that I can putter about on it, do rigging and such after work or on weekends.
If not, then it will have to get stored away for the winter, not to be seen again until spring. Sniffle :-( |

Gary, nothing yet with respect to the new boat front.

Super vs. Fountain
Interesting tidbit, as I was in search of a warm place to store/work on my boat this winter...
A guy that I met this summer who had a 32' Fountain, who was with a group of friends with a 27' and a 38', just bought a 35' that has twin 850's / xr imco's/ blower shop / all the good stuff. A fast boat that runs 105mph at full boost. He's hoping I get my 34 done in time so that we can run around together next summer. What's cool is that although he's a fountain guy through-and-through, he knows full well that he can't hang with me when it gets into the big waves. He said, "I'm more of a flat water boat. I can't run anywhere near your Super when it gets real rough. If anyone says 'well Dave's gone running out there' I'll tell them to not even bother". It's just nice to see that he understands the capabilities of the Super (not everybody does) and also reinforces my belief that this boat will absolutely rock!! Having just come back from a trip to Hawaii and seeing big waves everywhere, I can't wait!!! |
Any pics to share of beautiful Hawaii :grinser010:

Sure Noli. I've got hundreds of them. Here's a sample of pics from our trip on Maui and Kauai:

Spectacular trip! |
Wow!
you are da man! |
Happy New Year!
Happy 2012 all!!! Noli, I hope you had a great Christmas!
Haven't been active fhere or a while, but thought I'd post a picture of a few inches of Canadian snow that fell on the 34. Maybe I'll name her "Snow White"! Please, no seven dwarf's jokes. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...1230-00058.jpg My buddy promptly got the shrink wrap out after this and we put it away safely and worry free for the winter. I wasn't able to find affordable shop acommodations to work on it through the winter, so it's resting now until the spring time. I have made some progress in acquiring a few items for it, like a second 300 HPDI, Latham steering, and a Garmin Nav. My plan is to acquire as much of the items I need in order to start rigging like mad when the weather gets better. Cheers, Dave |
