If it were me, I'd beat on Gary for a good deal for Superbabi, then build a 500HP/489cube stroker EFI from the 1999 Volvo 7.4GL I have sitting in my basement. I've got the AZ Speed Intake, 500EFI valve train and...ready to go.

Thanks Pat. A Great deal can be had on my Y2K, getting ready to order new boat !!!

Thanks for all the reply's, very helpful, does anyone have anymore info on the 6 year warranty on a 496 HO motor+drive? a Y2K should run in the upper 60's with that set up?

I called Mercruiser at (405) 743 - 6566

and they said that the 496 Mag and 496 Mag HO are discontinued.

HO 425 hp should get you 72 mph. I have 496 HO located.

TJBHAWK, what type of boat do you have?

This is true but there are some still out there. Whats next for ya Gary? Either Y2K seems like a great deal!!! I would personally try to step up to a 525efi. Its just a great motor.

I personally would go with Gary's Y2K, get that 496 that Gary found ride it for a year or two then upgrade the engine to 500+ when you've saved up some cash.

You'll have a Merc in your back, plus what I like:

* PCM 555 with SmartCraft CAN Capability
* Sequential Multi-Point Electronic Fuel Injection
* 2-pieceLong Runner intake with 75mm Throttle Body (80mm w/DTS)
* Distributorless Ignition w/Knock Control and Platinum Spark Plugs
* Closed Cooling, Long Life 5-Year Anti-Freeze, Brass Sea Water Pump

my .02

The 496 ho is a great engine but only makes 425 hp and not a good engine to upgrade(very expensive and has cast internals)If low 70 will work for you it would be a great choice, most people will get bored quickly with that power, for apox the same price 14k or so you could get a rebuilt 550-600 package that would be perfect for the hull and still work with the xr,the 496 is no longer made but merc has a limited supply of cpo units available thru merc dealers,i am a merc dealer and can offer great deals if interested, the y2k hull loves speed and hp

MDG, can you show us pics of the 502-500 550HP with new gil exhaust, dart heads ?

would luv to see it! That would be the way to go....$49K asking

I spent $45K on my SB24

The block and heads are at the machine shop as we speak, going to build it this winter will take some pics, engine is a merc 502-500 going to bore to 4.5 ,some of the upgrades include crower i beam rods, world products heads with new manley valves, world intake fully reconditioned engine dyno tested, engine will be fully rigged with all merc accessories ready to bolt in,the gil exhaust has low hrs on them, going to upgrade the cam so final hp should be around 550-600,this would be a great engine for the y2k as it is complete not a base engine that needs all the rigging, accessories and exhaust that really add up in cost
