Dave, no up grades just a rebuild, not that I did not want a few more hp's, but it seems no one has broken the codes for the system. Ron Potter down in FL. did the rebuild and the dyno was 601 hp. As for break in, just a couple of WOT BURSTS. Merc Racing redid the 5 blade maximus and in the 2' chop she ran pretty nice, 83.2. Not to shabby for a single 30' with one 600.:D

How does that 5-blade compare to bravo 1 4-blade,have not tried a 5-blade yet, just got in a 31lab bravo 1 might try it out today, weather is very windy and barely 60 so not sure, what size is your 5-blade,how many rpm.

The 5 blade 27" I'm using is a great prop for my hull/motor/combo.I like the 4 blade 29 I have, but the 5 gives the best top end, yesterday I hit 5400 rpms. Still dialing in. I guess it never ends ????:D

Rick, Ron Potter did a great job with the motor rebuild, the boat/motor are running SUPER !!!! I am trying to put together a summer weekend party, I have already spoke with a couple of the guys at this site and perhaps it may be a go. John, there are a couple of manufacturers who make underwater lights, but usually they are low voltage types. The lights I am using are "High Intensity Discharge" 175 watt Mercury Vapor line voltage of 110. I am currently making these lights myself for our own enjoyment! I would love to produce them on a laarger scale to sell, but without a U L listing, the liability would be GREAT.

H2oscene 07-08-2007 09:08 PM

They are awsome lights I bet they would sell... Patent Pending... Then "BIG" Superboat Mega Yacht - Ricks next project... Order more resin Rick

Hey G.,
I've got a 3 blade that shoots a pretty good tail if you'd like to try it...:D

ActiveFun 07-27-2007 10:31 PM

Why would you want to shoot a huge rooster tail?? I always felt that If you a shooting a huge tail you are not running efficient. As you raising the trim your bow should lift, and the drives should still run parallel with the top of the water. If your drives just raise and raise, your bow is not lifting, therefore, huge rooster tail??

The rooster tail comment ( by me ) is talking about using a Surface type drive system on the Y2K, not an XR type drive set up thats trimmed up all the way.

z.zuperboat 07-28-2007 07:21 AM

The tails not that high. Its something that cant be avoided when you have 1/2 the blades above the water line.

Pat McPherson 08-10-2007 07:48 AM

Hey Gary,
I saw advertised in Power Boat that the new Teague Platinum XR is rated at 900HP.
http://www.teaguecustommarine.com/home.html
I do not see it on the web page yet though.
100mph is within reach...:D

Yes, but doesn't that drive require a transmission?

Pat, i'm looking at that ad now. Direct bolt on, 900 hp rated, very nice. Will my external steering hook up to the drive ???

Extension box if it does

Superbabi 08-10-2007 05:16 PM

Johnny, whats the retail price on the Platinum XR drive ??? Any feedback on how this drive holds up in the real world with 800-900 hp. ???:D

I believe the drive will bolt directly to your stock Merc HP transom assembly. Likely the plate on your drive for the steering would need to be transferred to the new drive, no big deal. The steering pistons will work for sure.
The Teague drive is sold with a 1-year warranty hooked to the 710HP Viper engine. I wonder what kind of warranty with 900HP?

Let's not make this more complicated than it needs to be.
Superbabi runs great as is. No extension box to add to the mix.
Let's just help Gary find a reliable Bravo type drive that will handle 800-900HP.
Teague may just have the drive up to the task...:cool-smiley-011:

There isnt one period. If you do decide to stay with a bravo type drive buy extras by your just going to blow them up. We've had teagues and blew them with only 750 horse. It's just an Xr so your steering should hook right up. No bravo type drive will last infront of that power. We blow them with only 525's. My suggestion is to have a spare so when one blows your not out of boating for too long.

FASTERDAMITT 08-16-2007 02:04 PM

Hmmm... We are at this again!:food-smiley-007:

Y2K Almost 80hrs 800HP stock Bravo XR so far.
American Offshore 150 hrs on 750hp stock Bravo XR until sold.

You gotta work the throttles! or spend the big bucks. I don't like Imco's. I don't think they are any better than XR's.
I would rather break two XR's than spend 30-40K on something that may break anyway! What drive has not broke?

Don't Jinx yourself...

Personally I have not ever broken a drive, not an Alpha, not a TRS, not a Bravo, and not a Volvo 280. But I never really hooked up an engine that is grossly over rated for the drive. There is a spare in my basement though.
I do know many stories of Bravos holding with big power and many that blow hooked to stock power.

For sure you have a better chace of a bravo lasting with big power if the boat is light and you throttle genteelly...

80 hours on a drive thats rated at a max of 600 hp, is pretty damn good and amazing. Most guys I know blow the xr's up with much less Hp than 800 hp. and yes they keep an extra drive or two in stock. What drive are you talking about thats 30-40k ???
